Damien’s mind was blurred as he drove through the winding streets, the thought of the evening’s events pressing down on him with every mile. His thoughts spiralled, and the taste of Blaire’s kiss lingered on his lips. It wasn’t supposed to happen, he told himself over and over, but the tight knot in his chest refused to loosen. He couldn’t shake the image of her eyes, the way her body felt against his, the warmth that had surged between them.

But that wasn’t possible. He couldn’t let himself feel like this.

By the time he reached the bar, he was already sinking into a haze of confusion. The noise, the dim lights, the clink of glass bottles—it all felt distant as he ordered one drink after another. Each sip blurred the edges of his thoughts, pushing the guilt and doubt to the back of his mind. Just a few drinks to forget, he thought. Just a few to numb this feeling.

But it didn’t work. It never did.

Hours later, Damien stumbled out of the bar, his movements slow and unsteady. The cold
