“How long do you intend waiting here, detective? The man seems to be braver than we thought,” Ben said tiredly.
“That is more reasons you shouldn’t allow your patience wane down, Ben. If I know all criminals well, hard drinks aren't far from their favorites. As far as I know, this shop has been rated as the best in alcoholic drinks in the market and one so close to the map I have here,” Sarah said as she disclosed the map to Ben who studied it meticulously. “This is from a reliable friend whom I have saved his ass so many times as a token of his gratitude,” “Hmm,” Ben heaved in resignation. “Then I have no option than to pin my ass here with you. But remember, detective, the men we’re hunting aren’t just ordinary men that fight with pistols and axes but dark horses if my aging brain does not fail me,” Ben chipped in, this time, fear had settled on his dark eyes. “You know little, Ben,” Sarah uttered as she watched a black Bentley pull over. “I’m giving you the last chance to back out and return to your family, officer,” she said to Ben. “As a coward, you mean?” he asked as he directed his eyes to the direction Sarah had focused on. “I’m not speaking to you as a detective but as a friend. I can cover your back and no soul will know that you were once a coward,” she said calmly. “What will the public say of an officer who flew away from the battle field for safety when the truth eventually comes out someday?” “If the only reason that you’re here is for public honour, then the ground on which you fight is shaking, Ben,” Sarah said looking at him meaningfully. “I fight for my country just like you, detective,” he said bravely. “Then, it’s a fight till death, officer,” Sarah shook his hand vigorously. Just then, a tall huge man in a black overcoat and an old cowboy hat that veiled half of his, face briskly walked out from the super market as he hopped into the dark Bentley that had just pulled by."It’s time to finish our mission, officer,” Sarah said. She dashed into her black hummer jeep as Ben found himself planted on the passenger’s seat in spite of himself.
“Do you think that man is one of our suspects?” Asked Ben. “He may be disguised but I can’t be fooled,” Sarah said as she turned on the ignition and followed the car. After what seemed like an hour drive, it became obvious to Sarah that she was after a shadow. The car had entered the suburb area of the town. Sarah saw the last image of the car some miles away and it quickly disappeared from view.
Right now, she relied on her judgement for direction as she now applied the break every now and then and swerved from right to left to avoid the potholes that stood as guards to the surrounding bushes.
“I knew from the onset that we were meeting our doom, Sarah,” Ben said as he shook from side to side as the car swung rhythmically.
“And to avoid such doom, friend, I gave you the chance to back out but you chose to be a hero,” Sarah barked through clenched teeth. She pulled furiously at the gear as the car came to a halt. She jerked the gear again, this time more forcefully but the dull sound that escaped through the exhaust was less encouraging.
Angrily, she jumped out of the car and threw the bonnet of the car open as she stared at the radiator disappointedly.
“Now, what is wrong with the vehicle?" Ben was obviously panicking. “I intend to find that out if your heart can at least stop pounding too loud,” “I just don’t find the whole madness funny anymore, detective. Two persons against God knows who in the midst of God knows where with no arms other than pistols” “Can you do me a favour, Ben?” Sarah asked calmly. “What?” Asked Ben as he struggled to get himself collected. “Shut up!” Sarah said as she took a closer look on the radiator. “We’ll be through this if you stop being frantic and unbearable. Our mission here is to discover their hideout and not fight them. I Think this will be enough to stop your nerves from jerking,” Sarah wasn’t too sure if things would be as smooth as she had said but one thing was sure, her statement was enough to get Ben relaxed as he leaned over to lend her a hand. “And who the devil are you to dare me?” Sarah’s heart leapt out of her as she saw a tall and deadly figure close the space between them. Ben was now shivering in fear but managed to put up a courageous look like every police man would, in such a situation. “I’m a no fool young woman. I have noticed that you have an unfinished business with us for so long but what puzzles me is why a pretty face like yours will be blown open in seconds for your stupid quest,”Richard stared deep into Sarah’s two big eyeballs that gave no information away. Her expressionless look seemed to attract his curiosity the more.
“Is there something you want us to hear or do we bring our meeting to an end here and now?” He asked casually as his gaze shifted and he stared into the distance. His overcoat floated in the air and his eyes squinted under the cowboy hat. Although his voice was ever calm, it carried terror and haboured doom to anyone who mistook it as ordinary.
Richard had always been a few words addict and hated raising his voice above 2 decibels. When he talked, his jaw stood at the same position as if he never talked at all.
But his eyes always conveyed more messages than his mouth and equally carried a large amount of horror and intimidation that could send chills down one’s spine.
“I wonder what the members of the brotherhood look like if all you could look like is a frustrated monster, or do you people recruit only ugly, jobless and hopeless men?” Sarah said sarcastically.
Was this lady mad and deliberately courting death? Which part of her eyes saw Richard as ugly? If only she knew that she was speaking to Richard Wilson, the world's most ruthless, powerful and business tycoon, perhaps, she wouldn't dare to be this careless. Again, Richard's lips curved into a wry smile as he seized Sarah up and stroked the rim of his cowboy hat before calmly saying,
“I can’t guarantee how many pieces of flesh that will be hanging on your body before you finally make it to the brotherhood camp but am sure that it won't be enough to make a nice drum if you don’t tame your tongue and allow your brain run faster than your mouth,” he narrowly shifted his gaze on officer Ben who was violently shaking by now. “One more thing, the brotherhood has one thing for all cops—Hatred. So, you can be rest assured of your death,” “Still, I’m sure they will cherish my visit more than their dreamless lives. Not every hoodlum will miss this opportunity of meeting a lady who has a special offer for them like I do,” said Sarah. She gave Richard a knowing and confident smile that got Ben confused about what game she was actually into this time. Could she be buying more time with this tactics?
Well, this was a great opportunity they could not afford to mess up with if their asses were to be saved from bullets from a creature with no heart like Richard.
Richard only took a quick glance at the duo before he walked few inches closer to them and said in a voice that was so calm and sounded almost like a whisper,
“You choose the minute you try to act funny as your last moment on earth. Beware.” He swiftly headed to his car parked around a corner as Sarah and Ben followed suit.If only Sarah’s car didn't break down, she would have caught up with him in matter of minutes. But it seemed the car didn't just break down. It was Richard's doings. He had noticed them earlier.
Ben who had withdrawn his stride, reached into his pocket and pulled out his pistol but a bullet flew from nowhere into his head as he unceremoniously lay silent on the ground. He was dead!
“I warned you, the moment you choose to do anything stupid becomes your death hour,” said Richard as he calmly turned to look at the dead man. “Why don’t you finish me too, you bastard!” Sarah yelled. “Because all bastards want something in common, young lady,” he cut in sharply as he cackled. “Maybe to find out whom their real parents are. Who knows, you might know one or two things about my real parents. But, I might still reconsider killing you right away if your tongue rolls a little faster than it should one more time,” he said and pushed Sarah into the back sit and sat beside her as Paul did a u-turn and drove away, heading back to the route they had taken earlier. This had been a deceit. Sarah thought. She had been fooled. She had thought that this was the gangs' hide out and that she would wipe them all out when the time comes.
Little did she know that Richard was a hardened mafia whose IQ was beyond normal? This man was, indeed, the devil. Sarah took a painful look at Richard who was staring outside the window undisturbed.
The cowboy hat shielded half of his face and could not let Sarah see all that she wanted to see but she knew for sure that this was one of the grand and dangerous leaders q of the mafias.
She swore under her breadth, not daring to breath louder than she should, that she would avenge the death of all the souls this man had taken down—Ben.
'How will his poor family who awaits his return cope with the news of his painful death?' Sarah thought bitterly.
Being here has never been a mistake, Richard.” Sarah squirmed as his hand went deeper into her throat and his blue eye balls moved threatingly in hers. “Hell no! It has not and will never be.” Richard snarled back as he tightened his grip under her throat. “Not when am willing to make the remaining few hours of your existence long but painful. Your kind only look their best when they’re in their graves. I fear the phrase ‘life well spent’ isn’t meant for your kind. Every cop has one or two things separating them from morality, so, Lucifer won’t be disappointed meeting you above,” he barked, looking at the two red eyes that poked out in pains. This was the first time Richard was wordy. “I intend forcing you and your men to hell before you get rid of me asshole,” Sarah’s voice could be heard in-between choking and squirming. &n
“I suppose you know what to do with this,” Richard said as he tossed a bag to Sarah. It contained all that she would need to put on for the mission they were about to set off in a few minutes time. He drew closer and cut the rope that bound her hands as Sarah winced in pains. Her wrists had lines of red marks and swollen flesh which was clearly an evidence that Richard had meant to torture her to death and had made the rope so tight that her wrist could be cut off by the rope if she had done as much as struggle to free her hands from it. At first, her wrist was numb and she couldn't reach for the bag that lay on her laps. Richard had no patience for this dilly-dallying. He yanked her up from the bamboo stick she was made to sit on. Sarah bit back the tears that wanted to pour down following the pains that greeted her when Richard pulled her by the hair. “
“From one of our trusted allies, I won’t be surprised if the police closes in on us now,” Jack said as he took a glass of wine from Richard who looked unbothered by what he had just said and pokily filled every cup on the large brown wooden table like a professional waiter in a royal home. “That leaves us with one choice,” he finally said as he sipped his wine leisurely.Jack raised his eyebrows slightly in enthusiasm as he asked, “And what is that, bro?” “Use the detective as a bait to lure othe
“I’m sure we won’t have a hard time finding her if we go through this route,” Frank said as he studied the map carefully again and stuffed it into his breast pocket. He abruptly stopped in his tracks. “This way,” he commanded as he heard a painful moan not far from the riverbank. "Sarah!" He called out as he walked towards her. "What's she trying to say?" He Wondered as Sarah kept shaking her head vehemently. He moved a little closer. "Why is she tied to a tree?" He said to sergeant Anderson who was now standing beside him. "I think she is telling us to run, Frank," sergeant Peter who had joined them said in panic but Frank was already heading towards Sarah.
Sarah's feet was stuck in shingle. The thought of seeing Richard's beastly face made a stream of hot blood spurt into Sarah's throat. She wasn't going to let Frank down. She was going to try something besides waiting for her own death. But she was drained of the littlest strength and could only mutter softly under her breath, "someone...help!" But no help was coming. Even the birds that hovered around the tall coconut trees that beautified the ocean, seemed to be enjoying her predicament and twittered merrily in what sounded to Sarah like, 'why did you join the police force?' She laughed bitterly at her poor self. After a long while, she silently said a prayer and decided it was time she relied on her strength else she dies away. She tried to lift her legs but almost fell immediately. Her legs were too weak to support her weight. She bit hard on her lips as if her survival depended on ho
The large hall was lusterless and sparsely decorated. The only ornament in the big hall that had several rooms inside was an art work that instilled horror to every visitor. The atmosphere was feastive as the men were busy celebrating what Sarah knew too well wouldn't be anything good. Jack was calmly sipping a glass of whiskey when he caught sight of Sarah and Richard making their ways into the large hall. Richard was steadily supporting her with his huge arm. "We awaited your return, man. But certainly not with that fellow. What really stopped the great and heartless Richard from sending that thing to the bottom of the hell," Jack asked as he staggered towards them. His glass of whiskey was shaking in his hand. Richard looked at Sarah briefly before saying, "She escaped," he took a few steps forward. &
"You can at least tell me where you're taking me to," Sarah's voice was cracky. Richard shut the car door, turned on the ignition and zoomed across the lonely and deserted old building. After what seemed like a century, he lazily replied, "The brotherhood suggested that you come with me. You'll need to make use of your acting skill once again. You're job here is to convince any suspicious eyes that we're a couple. They believe it'll help divert the attention of some zealous minds who may want to report me to the authority for the bounty and make them focus on their poor lives instead,"his face remained expressionless as he pulled on the gear. "This idea was never mine but you'll need to impress me, young lady. Hence, I suppose you know the actions every decent housewife take? You can put up some," he said.
"What happened to the smile every married woman who happens to be in a shopping mall with her husband manage to put on?" Richard whispered almost inaudibly. "Don't dream too much because you're not getting that from me," Sarah barked undertone as Richard chuckled. He was so handsome when he smiled. His thin lips parted, showing a set of white teeth. He touched his temple before replying evenly, "Sure. I found out long time ago that you're not in good terms with smiles," he led her to the whiskey department. Sarah paused and looked up at Richard. He was a giant compared to Sarah. She'll need to raise her head slightly if she wanted to see his face. She frowned and said, "This dosen't look like the items any couple would buy," she was mocking him. "You're the only
Two months later, Richard was in his study, flipping through his files absent-mindedly when Frank entered. Richard hadn't gone to his office since Sarah left. He looked up, pursing his lips. His sunken eyes had lost the energy and brightness in them before and he looked haggard too. "I learnt you haven't been eating nor sleeping well lately. You need to stay alive first if you hope to see Sarah again," said Frank. He had gone back to his apartment immediately after Sarah left. Sarah had called Lucy and quickly employed her to take special care of her friend before leaving the country.Richard didn't say anything. "It has been two months, man. You need to brace up and discuss with your wife," "I can't, Frank. Sarah avoided me throughout my three weeks stay in London. She wouldn't even let me talk to her. I have had several interviews with different media to exonerate myself but it seems she has deleted me from her memory and doesn't even listen to any news
Sarah didn't care if she died or lived. She beat the traffic lights and didn't step on the break until she got to the clubhouse. She took an elevator and in no distant time, she was standing at the passage that led to Richard's private room here. Sarah didn't know whether to enter or just stand there. She knew that this would break her completely if it happened to be true that Richard was here with a woman. She really hoped that Kim was lying. Richard's personal bodyguards approached Sarah. They had been standing there even when Sarah walked in but Sarah was just too emotional to notice them. Her eyes reddened and her lips trembled when she saw them. This was actually true! He even instructed his guards to wait outside while…" Sarah broke into tears again. Some minutes later, she wiped her tears away and was determined to see Richard himself before leaving. The guards tried to stop her but couldn't. They didn't know what their master was doing with another lady inside but they knew
Richard was in a meeting when his phone rang, he picked up the phone and saw the caller's ID. He ignored the call but the caller wouldn't stop calling so he blocked the line instantly.A few minutes after the meeting, his phone rang again. It was a new number so he picked the call and listened. "You don't have to block my lines, we're not enemies. I only wanted us to talk for the last time," Richard recognized the voice immediately. "There's nothing to talk about, Kimara. I'm a married man now, remember?" Richard said, his voice very cold. "If you continue to treat me like an enemy, I might as well kill myself. I can't lose my childhood friend simply because he's married. Don't you care about how I'll feel if you cut me off abruptly?" "You'll surely get a good man that will genuinely love you, Kimara," said Richard. "I know that, okay? All I ask is just to speak to my friend for the last time. I heard your wedding ceremony is coming up in
The next day, Sarah prepared to leave for work, this time, she wasn't in a hurry. She was the director of this company now and so, she wasn't answerable to any person except the chairman of the company who happened to be her husband too. Every other person receives orders from her now. Sarah first went to the first floor to see Frank. After making sure that he was well taken care of, she left the villa in her new Ferrari. She drove into the parking lot and parked her car. When she alighted from the car, she saw some customers who parked their cars in the same parking space as hers, staring at her, awestruck. Sarah wondered why they were all staring at her. She thought briefly and realized that her car was the latest model and more expensive than every other car parked there.Sarah pretended she didn't notice their obvious gaze and walked into the mall. Sarah would have gone to her office which was located on the same floor as the CEO'S, through the private elevator but decided to se
Sarah was a bit tired now so Richard supported her as they alighted from the car. What she initially thought to be a mere interview later turned out to be so fun. She was truly happy to see all the people that came to the office today. It was more like a social gathering of family and friends than ordinary refreshment.Mrs. Harriet and Kate were solidly behind her and gave Sarah their full support. This mattered to Sarah the most. Initially, she thought that they would not like the idea of Richard making her his director instead of choosing his only sibling, Kate and that this might cause a rift within their family. Now, she realized how wrong she was. They were not only happy that she was chosen but even came to give her their full support. She was just so lucky to be a member of this wonderful family. Sarah was all smiles as they headed inside. There was a huge object covered with a tarpaulin before them. Sarah looked up and saw this. Two bodyguards walked towards the object and c
There was a little surprising event after the media interviews. Sarah didn't know that Richard invited his family over including Carson and Daisy. She was surprised when she saw them enter the conference hall, their faces beaming with smiles. Sarah was too surprised for words. She just stared at them, not knowing what to say. Sarah looked at Richard who was standing beside her and saw him smiling.Everyone of them had a congratulatory package for her. They approached Sarah and gave her warm hugs one after the other then handed the presents to her. "Today is not yet my wedding day, why do you all have so many gifts?" Sarah uttered when she found her tongue. "Silly, must we get you presents only on your wedding day? It's good enough that you both have decided to act mature and make your marriage public. At least, I can proudly introduce you to all and sundry now," Mrs. Harriet said happily. Bella, Ava and some other female employees that were on morning shift were ca
Inside Richard's office, Sarah was sitting on a swivel chair while Richard sat opposite her. Sarah seldomly wore heels and usually felt uncomfortable whenever she did. So immediately they entered Richard's office, she kicked her heels away so her feet could feel the fresh air inside the room. Richard brought her feet to his thighs and gently massaged them. Sarah wanted to stop him but Richard wouldn't listen to her. "I have told you before, you don't have to wear this if you feel uncomfortable in them," Richard reminded her. Sarah pouted her lips and said, "How can a woman not wear heels from time to time? Every great woman that ever existed on this planet wore heels at least, throughout their youthful age and on occasions like this. I just have to wear them more often so I can get used to them," Richard stared at Sarah as if he had just seen an idiot and gave her a light knock on the head. Sarah grimaced, holding the spot and giving him a belligerent look.
An information was sent to the news media from the Wilson's public relations officer that Mr. Wilson was going to speak on his new stock, make a special announcement and also reveal the new director of his personal companies which comprised about 15 large malls, 8 hotels and so many other assets. The formal public statement would be made in two days' time. On D-Day, Sarah walked into the mall, hand in hand with Richard. She was dressed in a scarlet sleeveless short gown and a grey colored fluffy jacket then pencil black heels, her hair smoothly combed into a ponytail. Her face stood out like a painting, her eyes looking so bright and charming. Sarah looked completely stunning. The young polished man beside Sarah was a perfect description of a demigod. His face was extremely attractive, his lips so sexy and inviting. His deep sea blue eyes were a sight to behold. He was dressed in a well ironed grey suit with no single wrinkle on it, a white dress shirt inside then grey and striped ti
It had been a week now since Sarah was discharged from the hospital. She was much stronger now and could walk around. Sarah was 7 weeks and three days gone now. Since she came back from the hospital, she hadn't experienced the morning sickness again. Sarah was happily knitting a bobble hat in the garden, Richard sitting a few inches away from her and going through his laptop when Kate drove into the compound. Richard looked up and saw Kate, dressed in a white evening gown with a black handbag between her fingers as she made towards them. Sarah followed his line of sight and was surprised to see Kate. She didn't inform them that she was coming today. It was indeed a surprise visit. Sarah stood up immediately to receive her. "Look at you, you look so beautiful and healthy now, Sarah!" Kate exclaimed. She hadn't seen Sarah since she was discharged from the hospital. She only came back from Dubai two days ago. Although Sarah always told her that she was fine whenever she calle
