Chapter 5

A MAN FULL OF GUILT

...Robert...

I quickly went through the list Adam had sent me but oddly enough, I didnt find the woman I was looking for,

I knew she couldn't have possibly come and entered our house without being invited, Mom was always strict on things like that. I let out a frustrated sign,

The loud ringtone of my phone quickly got my attention, when I looked at the screen, I saw that it was The private hospital calling and answered the call

"Hello"

"Doctor Crown"

"What is it Doctor?, what happened to Melissa" I asked anxiously,

"She moved her fingers for a brief Moment some minutes ago, I thought you should Know" The Doctor said, that was great news, considering how Melissa had been in a coma for two years, this was really great news

"I will be on my way" I said and hang up the call,

I was filled with different types of emotions as I rushed to my car.

Melissa and I met in high school, she was my childhood sweetheart, we grow up together, went to the same schools and eventually planned our life together until everything fell apart because of me, the events of that unforgettable night were vivid, its almost as if I relived the moment each time I thought of it.

It was her birthday two years ago, I had planned everything to perfection and proposed to her, she said yes and that was the happiest moment of my life, but then after the party I had planned for her ended, we drove home and thats when the accident happened,

That was the last day I saw my Melissa smiling at me, for two years, she has been a coma, unable to live on, my heart ached for her, I had done this to her, only if I had been more careful then perhaps things wouldn't have turned out the way they did,

My heart felt heavy, I always felt that same way every time I went to see her, the fact that she had moved her hand was a sign she would wake up soon amd come back to me, I longed for her, for the time we lost all because of me, I wanted to make it up to her.

Within 12 minutes, I was inside the Doctor's office

"Did you check her vitals?" I asked

"Yes Mr Crown, everything seemed ordinary" The Doctor responded, I nodded

"Thank you for telling me, I will go in and see her" The Doctor politely nodded.

When I reached Melissa's ward room, I stood there for a few more minutes trying to compose myself, this has never been easy for me, I felt that perhaps she hated me for stealing away her life especially with what happened last night, the guilt was killing me.

I slowly opened the door and put the flowers I had brought in the vessel on a table, I went near the bed and held her hand in mine squeezing it gently

"Am sorry Baby" I whispered kissing the palm of her hand,

I stared at her beautiful face which once held the most beautiful smile,

"You moved your hand, I was really happy when the Doctor told me, Am sorry you are still in this condition, if I had my way, I would have taken your place" I paused as I felt my heart get even more heavy

"Everyday, I come here hoping to see the day you will be sitting here smiling at me, I love you melissa, please don't make me wait any longer, its killing me" I wiped out a tear from the corner of my eye and let out a deep sign

"I miss you so much babe, please don't punish me like this anymore" My eyes drifted to the ring on her finger before I looked at the one on mine

"I want to marry you and have a beautiful family like we planned, don't make me wait any longer, I don't know how long I can bare it" I let out another deep sign,

The door to the ward room suddenly opened and i immediately turned to see who had entered

"Mom?" I said surprised

"I knew you would be here, Robert, these are Work hours, why would you waste your time here?" She asked,

"What do you want?" I asked firmly

"Get the Doctors to switch off the life support machine, She is never going to wake up and I can not bare it any longer seeing you getting destroyed and blaming yourself over something that wasn't your fault" I let out a small chuckle and stared at the floor

"I am not destroying my life, how could you even come here asking me to do that?, I love Melissa, you should know by now am never letting her go" Despite the endless fights I had with my mom about Melissa in the past, she just wasn't ready to drop this topic

"Fine but don't you dare think I will just sit here and wait for you to come back to your senses" that statement got my attention as I stood up looking her in the eye

"You sent that woman last night didnt you?" I asked with raised eyebrows, Mom was quite for a few seconds before she burst out laughing

"What woman?, Robert what exactly are you accusing me of this time around?" She appeared to be disappointed but I knew her all too well,

"I didn't know you could stup as low as drugging me" I murmured

"Robert!, whatever made you think that of me, have some respect!" She was quiet for a few seconds before she spoke

"I have a proposal for you" she began

"What is it this time?" I asked

"I talked to Melissa's mom, she already gave the consent to have the life support machine turned off, she signed the papers and because she gave them to me, I can decide when exactly to do it" I didnt like where this conversation was going, Melissa's mom had told me about this but I thought I had managed to talk her out of it, I didnt think she could fall for my mom's persuasion

"What do you want?" I asked knowing fully well that whatever she said, I wasn't going to allow her to switch off the machine

"You bare me an heir and I will let her live as long as you want"....
