Kathleen’s P.O.V

“I’ll be right back,” he said, his voice calm but firm. He disappeared from the room, and I heard him rummaging through the bathroom cabinet. He returned quickly with the first aid box, setting it down beside me.

I didn’t say anything, because the physical pain somehow seemed to ease the mental pain of having Arthur so close to me, but at the same time, I knew he was even further out of my reach than he had ever been.

“Let’s have a look,” he said, kneeling at the foot of the bed. He carefully lifted my injured foot. The sight of the blood made me queasy, but Arthur remained unaffected. He cleaned the wound with a gentle but steady hand, wincing a little as he removed the shard of the broken plate embedded at the bottom of my foot. I clenched my teeth, gripping the bedspread as the pain flared.

“There we go, all done,” he said softly, applying a temporary bandage. “We need to get you to the hospital. What I did was all temporary,
