Chapter 5: The Mistake
Arthur’s P.O.V
The pediatric private ward was quiet and dimly lit, with a soft, hushed atmosphere. My little girl lay on the bed, her golden hair spread out around her like a halo. A teddy bear sat at her side, the one that she never left alone because it was a gift from her mother…the last gift that she received.
She was the only occupant of the room, and I was the only one who was allowed in. I sat on the chair next to her bed, my face etched with worry and fear. My brow furrowed as my eyes scanned her unconscious form, looking at the bandage on her head.
God! She must have been in so much pain!
Since she was saved from the claws of the kidnappers, she hadn't opened her eyes. Many hours had passed, each tick of the clock feeling like an eternity, and yet…she lay still on the bed like an unmoving statue.
A few moments later, as I stared at her to notice every tiny rise and fall of her breath, she moved her arm a little bit. "Hayley?" I called her, delighted, hoping that my baby would finally open her eyes and call for me. But my excitement was short-lived as she gave no response, resuming her coma-like sleep.
In the middle of my emotional turmoil, I recalled how I had an important business meeting earlier today and how I left it in the hands of my secretary, without even informing my business partners that I wouldn’t be able to make it. But none of that mattered half as much as my daughter's life did at this moment.
I still couldn't imagine what would have happened if I hadn't arrived at the scene early enough to save her from the crafty delivery girl who attempted to kidnap her. Who would’ve thought that an innocent looking face could hide something so dark and filthy underneath?
Finally, unable to bare it any longer, I got up to pace the little space in the room, my fingers trembling slightly as I ran them through my hair. I was trying to stay calm, to be strong, but it was so hard with my baby just lying there motionless...
All I wanted was to see my daughter's beautiful eyes, to hear her golden voice, to know that she was okay. The minutes ticked by at a snail’s pace, and I was all but ready to lose my mind.
Thankfully, right then, a nurse came in to check on her, smiling at me softly before she went on to take Hayley’s temperature and checked her heart rate.
"Hello, Mr. Dalton," she came to stand in front of me after she was done with the preliminary tests. She spoke in a gentle, soothing voice, not wanting to disturb my little angel.
"Is she okay? Is she just asleep? Is she in a coma?” Strangely, the questions just rushed out of me. I felt on the verge of a panic attack and the worst part was, I didn’t even know what to do to help it. “Hayley…she’s been asleep the whole time! It's been so many hours already!"
"It's only been two hours, Mr. Dalton.” The nurse sighed as she explained to me. “She’s still passed out because she was traumatized. It’ll take a little time for her brain to get out of that trauma. But she has been provided with the necessary medication and should be walking up any minute now."
A quiet, calm peace hung over the room, a sense that everyone was doing their best to help my daughter feel better.
"Does this mean she is going to be fine?"
"She's going to be okay, sir." The nurse finally looked up at me. "She'll be awake soon, so please calm down."
Like ice water on an open sore, her words were soothing to my aching heart. I heaved with so much relief that I couldn’t even explain, and blurted out words of gratitude."Thanks again, nurse..."
"The name is Betty!" She said, turning to leave after ticking off something on the chart in her hands and placing it on Hayley’s bed.
As I watched the woman walk out of her room, a sway to her hips that told me that she was doing it on purpose…I turned to look at the bed once again…and my eyes met my daughter’s bright blue eyes, the eyes she had inherited from her mother.
"Hayley?" I was shocked to find her awake. And if the nurse hadn't left the room already, I would’ve called her back that instant.
"Hayley!" I rushed to her bedside, holding onto her tiny hand as she looked around the room in confusion.
"Yes, daddy. Where is this place?" She looked from me to the curtain rails, to the child-sized pieces of furniture, her gaze finally resting on the balloons next to her. "Is this..." She squinted.
"You're in a hospital." I helped her sit up on the pillows, angling her bed so she didn’t have any trouble or hurt her back. Seeing her awake was all it took to make me calm down and it felt like I was finally able to breathe again.
"What am I doing here?" Her brow was raised in confusion.
"You got hurt, baby. Do you remember what happened?” I was already reaching for the telephone to call the nurse’s station. “But right now, all that matters is that you're fine, and safe."
I heard the ring of the phone before a woman’s voice answered the call. "Betty, am I right? Please come to the private pediatric ward at the far end of the block. My daughter is awake."
Betty was as swift as a bird on her feet. She arrived at the ward in under a minute as the door burst open and her form appeared before us, her breath coming out in shallow pants. "Is everything okay, sir? Oh! She’s up! That’s great news. She should be strong enough to go home in a few minutes."
“Go home?” I looked at the nurse in astonishment. "But you guys did nothing! No tests, no scans! Absolutely nothing! She can't be home just yet, she just woke up."
"We have confirmed her medical records with her doctor, sir.” Betty told me in a tight voice. “She is fine and ready for discharge."
"How did you confirm her records? With a stethoscope?" I asked incredulously. “What about a CT-scan? An x-ray, perhaps?”
"Mr. Dalton, your daughter is fine.” The nurse emphasized tightly. “There is no need for any more tests. We have done what we could and everything came out positive."
"Where is the doctor?" I asked irritated. “Call him now! I want to talk to him personally.”
"The doctor is on his lunch break…sir." She was getting irritated, I could tell from the tone of her voice, yet her smile remained intact. “I’ll let him know that you requested a visit, as soon as he returns.”
"Never mind!" I decided to call the doctor myself since the nurse wasn't able to do her job properly. Why would she assume my daughter was fine after such a traumatic incident? All she did was check her pulse and the monitors. I needed more than that to assure myself that my baby was fine!
"It's not necessary, Mr. Dalton. As you can see already…your girl is doing just fine." She tried to discourage me from getting any further tests done, but it was way too late. I had already called the doctor and he was on his way to my ward.
"Is everything okay, Mr. Dalton?" Doctor Peter asked as soon as he entered the ward a few moments later, his expression grim.
“Please, check on my daughter. She just woke up.” I told him and he immediately went to Hayley’s side, greeting her with a smile and asking her questions.
He performed small tests, moving his finger in front of her eyes, checking to see that Hayley's eyes were focusing correctly; and using a stethoscope on her to check her heart rate. Finally, after a few minutes, he came to stand in front of me.
"Your daughter is fine, Mr. Dalton" Doctor Pete smiled at me. “She’s ready to go home.”
However, even the doctor's tests weren't satisfactory for me. I needed more scans to reassure myself that everything was alright.
"How can those mere tests determine the safety of my child?" The national hospital was surprisingly lazy. I wasn't asking for too much, just a thorough medical checkup for fuck’s sake! To even think that I donated millions to this-
"Dad!!!" Hayley called out to me in her usual high-pitched voice, snapping my attention to her. "You're making a fuss about nothing. I told you that I'm fine. I don’t hurt anymore! Please just take me home already!”
"You don't understand baby, you're all I have.” I pleaded with her as I went to stand beside her once more. “Please, just…do the tests…so that I can feel relieved?"
I had lost her mother not too long ago. She had been the love of my life and the loss had been so sudden that even now, I sometimes wonder how it had all transpired. And now, I wasn't risking her life for anything. I wanted a thorough medical checkup done and proof that everything in her body was perfectly fine.
"Okay, I'll do it. You know I would do anything it takes to see you happy, Daddy." She accepted with a smile and I felt like a huge weight had been lifted off of my shoulder.
“Thank you, baby.” I sat on the bed and wrapped her in my arms, feeling the warmth of her tiny body as everyone else left the room to give us some privacy.
After a while, she broke the comfortable silence in the room; moving out of my arms to look up at me with her wide blue eyes. "What happened to the nice lady who saved me, Daddy?"
"What lady?" I had saved her from the kidnapper myself...hadn’t I? Then what exactly was she talking about now?
"The lady, Daddy! The one who saved me from those bad men!” She exclaimed, her eyes wide in astonishment. “And would you believe that she got injured while saving me? I wonder if she is okay..."
Jenny? Was Hayley talking about her nanny? The woman that I had hired today to look after her? But she had been missing from the scene…did that mean she was hurt somewhere and I didn’t know about it? If so, then she needs to be rewarded for her actions.
"I didn't see her when I came to save you, dear. I saw the kidnapper, though." I sighed. “But don’t worry about her. I’ve put her behind bars.”
Hayley bit her lips in thought, "I hope she's fine because I'm very worried about her. She’s hurt too…"
I planted a kiss on her forehead. "I'll text her and ask her what happened, don't worry baby. And I'll make sure she gets adequate medical attention. I'll also make sure I appreciate her for saving you, I do hope she's fine. Such a sweet lady."
"Text who? I didn't know you had her number."
"Of course, I have Jenny's number."
"No, no!" Hayley frowned immediately. "Jenny was the one who tried to take me. I told you I didn’t like her, but you wouldn't listen! As soon as you left, she brought in a man and they tried to take me away! She even slapped me!”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “Hayley…are you trying to say that, Jenny…tried to kidnap you?”
“Yes!” Hayley nodded her head vehemently. “But then there was this other lady in blue jeans, the delivery lady I mean. She was the one who saved me." Hayley sounded very angry at me, even though I still couldn’t comprehend what she was saying.
"It doesn't make any sense, baby. The lady in the blue jeans was the one I saw you with. She had probably hurt Jenny, then attempted to escape with you."
"That's not what happened!" She said, almost screaming. "I don't know what she came to do at our house, I think she came to deliver food! That was when I saw her! She ran after me when that man tried to take me with them inside their big, black car. But she saved me. But then I fell…and I don’t remember what happened next!"
The fogs of confusion slowly started to unfurl as the weight of Hayley’s words, and the complicated web of the situation that we were in, finally revealed itself in front of my eyes.
And it was then that I realized…that I had put the wrong person in jail.
Chapter 6: The EvidenceArthur’s P.O.V"Are you sure you remember everything correctly?" I wanted to be sure. "I want to know if you remember who Jenny is. Jenny is not the name of the delivery lady…she is the babysitter I hired to take care of you.”How could this be happening? Jenny was the kind babysitter who has many awards to her name. She had worked for celebrities and top people in the society. Then how could that woman have tried to kidnap my daughter? Was I deceived by a fake profile? Or did the woman I hire never make it to my house? Everything was getting so confusing…"Of course, I know who Jenny is. She is the ugly little lady that you forced me to stay with. I remember her!" Hayley snapped at me, clearly angry at this woman. "Why don’t you believe me, daddy? I’m telling the truth!""I trust you, baby…I’m just trying to understand correctly…” I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. “And you also claim that the other lady…was the one who saved you?" I was finally piecing
Chapter 7: The Clash of WillsKathleen’s P.O.VMy auburn hair fell around my shoulders, hiding my face from view from the other inmates. For hours, I sat here in silence, as tears streamed down my face relentlessly. Why was I being punished for things I didn’t do? And the charges pressed against me weren’t simple ones either. My eyes were red-rimmed and tired, and there were dark circles underneath them. I was still wearing the clothes I had been arrested in, even though they were wrinkled and stained. It had been many hours since the incident, and I was beginning to lose hope of leaving the cell. Maybe the man I met was right when he told me that I was going to stay here for a very long time, given that the man in question was wealthy."She's going to end up with a splitting headache, tired and weak if she doesn't accept her fate." The oldest of the inmates said to the other two whose gazes were equally on me."I cried too. She'll learn, she'll accept her fate, she'll adjust. She ha
Chapter 8: The RepercussionsKathleen’s P.O.VHating a person yet thinking about them often had to be the greatest form of self-torture. I disliked Arthur so much, but images of him refused to leave my mind. The way he had stood so tall and his hands in his pockets, towering a foot over me…the tone with which he spoke to me was proof that our societal classes were completely different. However, what really made this incident impossible to forget was the disrespectful apology he gave me.Although he claimed he was going to do his best to make sure my image stayed clean, the story found its way into the little town by itself. Walking past the young children of our neighborhood, who used to once run to me for warm hugs and chicken crumbs, all I got now were whispers and shared glances as they paused what they were doing to avoid me. The dramatic ones started running off towards their homes each time they saw me walking in their direction. I hated the look on their faces whenever I greet
Chapter 9: The Proposal Kathleen’s P.O.V I already told my mom I would be in my room, talking to Cole. Then why could she be calling me all of a sudden? Just in case I didn't hear her the first time, my mother called me again, her voice unusually high-pitched. "Kathleen!" I realized then that whatever it was, was urgent. My phone beeped at the same time, and it was a message from my mom, followed by a missed call. What the hell was even going on? I had never seen her being so paranoid like this before. I opened the message just to be safe and saw that it was another demand for me to come downstairs immediately. "Is she the one calling?" Cole asked, looking up at me in surprise. “Is something wrong? Kat…let’s be careful as we go downstairs, okay? Is this some kind of debt collector?” "If it was a debt collector then they would have called me." I frowned. “Besides, I’ve been paying the bank back on time and there hasn’t been any issue with the debt yet. So why would they suddenly
Chapter 10: The Unexpected Appointment Kathleen’s P.O.V "Pleaseeeee," She pleaded with so much desperation, her beautiful blue eyes watering at she looked up at me. I sighed, looking down into her face. She was a gorgeous baby, and one day, she would grow up to be an even prettier woman that no one will be able to refuse. I loved how she politely asked me to be her babysitter, and it hurt me to refuse her offer. But it wasn’t her fault her dad was an asshole. "I would love to," I began, thinking of bow best to keep the conversation going. "Thank you so much Miss Kathleen, thank you so, so much!" She immediately started cheering, jumping up and down while clapping her hands, when she thought that I had accepted her request. "No, I didn't say yes yet." I swallowed, trying hard to say the words that I knew would crush her joy. "I c
Chapter 11: The Right ChoiceArthur’s P.O.VHayley, elated to hear that Kathleen was finally accepting to watch over her, ran crashing into her arms with watery eyes, surprising all of us.Kathleen hugged her back just as passionately, rubbing her hair and kissing her forehead.I watched expressionless, wondering why my daughter was suddenly so attached to Kathleen, despite her dislike for people in general. This had to be something more than being saved…right?I was glad to know that she was getting a babysitter that cared about her. However…as to how good of a caretaker she would turn out to be? That was still under debate."Thank you so much," Hayley said now, looking up at the woman with her big blue eyes. "I promise to be a good girl." She added, crossing her heart. "When would you come? Will you live with us or would you come in the morning and leave in the evening?" She was super eager to find out, and was getting ready to ask many more questions."I'll come soon, I'll need to
Chapter 12: The Preparation Kathleen’s P.O.V The alarm clock buzzed loudly, jolting me out of my slumber. I rolled over and hit the snooze button, my mind still fuzzy from sleep. Everything had happened so fast, and reality had unfolded so quickly that I was still having difficulty coping with everything. It was like reading a prewritten script, and I was like an actor who only needed to act out my part. It was hard to believe that I was going to be working under the man who threw me in jail. But hopefully, it was all going to be worth it because I was certain that a man like Arthur Dalton wouldn’t be stingy about the fees and we would soon be out of debt and the restaurant too would once again be on its way to success. As the minutes ticked by, the reality of the day ahead started to sink in. I didn't want to appear irresponsible by arriving later than proposed so I swung out of bed, dar
Chapter 13: The ReasoningKathleen’s P.O.VI arrived at the Dalton Mansion earlier than I needed to, feeling relieved that I wasn’t late on my first day. Striding in through the iron gates, I was thrilled to take in the beauty all around me. I had come up here to make deliveries a couple times in the last two years, but I hadn't been allowed to go inside. There had always been guards at the door who would accept the order from me.But for the first time, today, I took a good look at the house, taking in its serenity and beauty. The mansion stood tall and proud, its stone walls gleaming in the sunlight. The grounds were immaculately kept, with perfectly trimmed hedges and flower beds which were empty in the winter. It was obvious that Arthur took special care in seeing that everything glistened to perfection. A large fountain stood at the center of the lawn, its clear water sparkling in the sun. Finally, I stepped inside the large front door made completely out of wood and it felt like
Chapter 81: Happily Ever AfterKathleen’s P.O.V I stood in front of the full-length mirror, smoothing out the delicate lace of my white gown. It’s a stunning dress, simple yet elegant, and it made me feel like a princess. The reflection staring back at me looked like a stranger. Not because of the dress or the elegant hairstyle, but because of the happiness that radiated from my face. It had been a long journey to get here, but standing here now, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of peace and joy.My mother stood behind me, helping me with the final touches. She adjusts the veil and steps back to admire her work."Kat, you look absolutely beautiful," she says, her voice thick with emotion. She wipes away a tear that escapes down her cheek. “I didn’t think I would see you in such a wonderful wedding dress!”"Mom, don't cry," I say, though my own voice is unsteady. I turn to face her, feeling the wave of the moment settle over me. "You always said you wanted to see me settle down w
Chapter 80: Christmas ProposalKathleen’s P.O.V Christmas had been a lonely time for me these past few years. I had usually spent the holidays working or at the hospital, during my mother’s treatment. But this year, everything changed when I met Arthur and his little girl, Hayley.Today, Hayley turned to me with a big smile as we all gathered around the Christmas tree after dinner to exchange gifts. "Miss Kat, remember when I asked Santa for a mommy this Christmas?"I couldn’t help but laugh. "Oh, Hayley, of course I remember!"Hayley’s smile was enough to light up the whole room, "I think he already fulfilled my wish by giving me you."Arthur and I exchanged a look, and I felt my heart skip a beat. We had only just announced our relationship, but I knew that he was the one, the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. And maybe, Hayley was right. Santa may have just granted her wish.Arthur's mother took my hand in her with a gentle smile. “Hayley is right. Welcome to the
Chapter 79: Clearing the MisunderstandingsKathleen’s P.O.V “Where have you been Arthur?” Georgina immediately snaps at her son, her expression dark as she looks from me to Arthur and then at Savannah. “We were about to have the announcement, but then we realized that the couple were missing! How can you abandon your own party like that?”“Mother,” Arthur spoke softly, trying to calm her down. “There is something you must know first, before anything is announced. So please, listen to Savannah.”All eyes turned towards Savannah immediately and she shrunk away under the scrutiny of their combined gazes, her eyes darting towards Arthur and me as I could see her face visibly pale from fright."We’re here for you," I say softly, moving to her other side and giving her shoulder a reassuring squeeze.Savannah took a deep breath and finally, turned to her parents. "Mom, Dad, there’s something I need to tell you. Something I’ve been hiding for a long time." Her voice trembled with fear, but s
Chapter 78: The Truth about SavannahKathleen’s P.O.V I took a deep breath. "It's a long story," I began, unsure of where to start. But I knew I had to tell him everything."Remember when I went to Target to buy the tree for Hayley’s room?" I asked, remembering the time I had finally learned why Arthur hated Christmas so much. Arthur nodded, still looking puzzled. "Well, while I was there, I bumped into this stunning woman. She was tall, elegant, the kind of person you can't miss. It was Korina, the supermodel."Arthur's eyes widened. "Korina? What was she doing at Target?""That's what I wondered too," I said with a small laugh. "She was looking for a tree just like me. We started talking, and surprisingly, she seemed genuinely interested in getting to know me. At first, I didn't understand why someone like her would want to be friends with someone like me. I mean, I'm just an ordinary person, right?"Arthur nodded, urging me to continue. "So, we exchanged numbers and started hangin
Chapter 77: Untangled WebsKathleen’s P.O.V I stood there, frozen, as Arthur kissed me. For a moment, everything else faded away. All that mattered was the feeling of his lips on mine, the way his hand wrapped around me in a blanket of warmth and comfort.Till now, the scrutiny of our neighbors, the whispers and the gossip had become too much to handle, until Uncle Thompson finally broke the silence and asked me, point blank, what had been on everyone’s mind. It had taken me aback to the point where I didn’t have any idea how to respond. But then I had turned and watched Arthur march towards me with determination…and now, as his lips moved against mine, I couldn’t help but feel a immense amount of relief wash over me.Then, reality crashed back in, and I realized that everyone in the restaurant was staring at us. My heart sank when I noticed my parents among the onlookers, their expressions a mix of shock and confusion.I pulled away from Arthur, my face burning with embarrassment. B
Chapter 76: Can’t Wait Any LongerArthur’s P.O.V When I walked out of the room, I wasn't expecting to see Hayley standing there, tears streaming down her cheeks. Immediately, my heart clenched with concern. I knelt down beside her, gathering her into my arms gently."What's wrong, sweetheart?" I asked softly, my voice filled with worry.Hayley sniffled, her eyes red and puffy. "Daddy, did Miss Kathleen leave because I was bad? Because she doesn't love me anymore?"My heart sank even further. Kat was Hayley's beloved nanny, their relationship going even further than just the bonds of duty. They were inseparable…and now that Kathleen wasn’t here, she must be heartbroken. I rubbed Hayley's back soothingly, trying to find the right words to comfort her."No, no, Hayley," I said gently, "Kathleen loves you very much. She didn't leave because of anything you did. Sometimes, people need their own space, but that doesn't mean she doesn't love you."Hayley looked up at me with her big, watery
Chapter 75: Eve of ChangeArthur’s P.O.V I stood at the edge of the party on Christmas Eve, the music thumping through the floor and the chatter of people swirling around me. The office had transformed into a wonderful Christmas wonderland with all the necessary decors and even a gigantic Christmas tree to go along with the theme. However, it wasn’t just an ordinary Christmas party that was usually held by our company for the employees every year. This party was different.I glanced at Savannah, who was smiling tightly as she talked with some of the guests. Neither of us wanted to be here, announcing our engagement in front of everyone. It wasn't our idea. Our parents had planned this without our knowledge, springing it on us like an unwanted surprise. As I watched Savannah, my mind drifted back to the conversation I had with my mother earlier in the day. I had confronted her in the living room, where she was arranging flowers with a meticulousness that belied the chaos she had creat
Chapter 74: Unreciprocated FeelingsKathleen’s P.O.V I hadn't spoken to Cole since that incident in front of the restaurant. Seeing him now, standing awkwardly in front of me…I had no idea how to start a conversation, let alone tell him my deepest thoughts. The memory of that day was still fresh in my mind—his confession, my shocked silence, and the way everything changed in an instant. If Arthur hadn't been there that evening…I don’t think I could’ve had the courage to deal with him alone. But now, here he was, my former best friend…In all honesty, I didn’t even know if I could still call him my friend. We had too many unresolved issues between us. But as he took a seat on the edge of my bed, keeping as much distance between us as possible, I could see the worry etched on his face as he turned to face me."Kat," he says softly, his voice filled with uncertainty. "I’ve been worried about you. No matter what happened between us, I still care. I wish we could just forget that day and
Chapter 73: Comforting A FriendKathleen’s P.O.V Memories of Hayley and Arthur floated in my mind, making me feel like a heavy burden was pressing down on my chest. I had loved them both in my own way, but they were never really mine to begin with. It was time to let them go and try to move on. I needed a distraction, something to take my mind off the past.Usually, at times like this, the only person who provided me with any form of comfort was my best friend, Cole. But with the recent developments in our relationship, everything I once knew had come crashing down around me, and I knew that I could never have that connection that I once shared with Cole. When everything else failed, I decided to reach out to my new friend.I picked up my phone and dialed Korina's number. She always had a way of making me feel better, and I hoped talking to her would help. The phone rang a few times before she picked up."Hello?" Korina's voice was shaky, and I could hear sniffling in the background.
