New day

After spending the day rummaging around an endless string of shops, I’d purchased replacement clothing as well as the sexiest dress I’ve ever tried on.

James texted me while I was out and told me he’d be by to get me at six for the event he was taking me to.

I’d curled my hair into soft waves that I’d pinned into a low pony. My eyes were more natural, focusing on lashes while choosing a red lip to go along with my dress.

The dress itself hugged my body like a glove. The low, square neckline left little to imagination as well as the double slits in the front. I had to wear a thin black lace thong so that nothing would show when I walked. The dress itself was a satin black slip dress with a red lace overlay.

The splurge of the day wasn’t even the beautiful dress. It was the six-inch red bottomed platform Louboutin’s that made the muscles in my legs look amazing beneath the slits.

Today felt like a new day for me.

As I carefully walked down the steps, the front door opened, and in walked

Tonight was the Gathering of wolves. It was a full moon, and I’d skipped out on the last three years due to Onyx being missing, but Dante had texted an idea. Maybe if I spent more time in my element, he would be able to break through whatever barrier held him back.I wasn’t walking into tonight with any expectations. Not in regard to Onyx anyways. Rosa on the hand, well she would be at my mercy tonight after her little display this morning. When I’d called Alpha Xaden, he was more than happy to save Rosa and I a seat. I was grateful that Blood Moon was willing to host this year since Alpha Xaden and I were allies prior to the attack.Rosalind looked absolutely stunning tonight. If Onyx were here, he would have ordered her turn around and go change. She was for our eyes only and I know the moment I walk her into the Gathering; She will be the center of everyone’s attention.“Have I told you how beautiful you look tonight?”The way her cheeks heated with every praise lit something warm

  • A Marriage of Convenience   The Gathering

“I’m not imagining this, right?” My eyelids fluttered rapidly as I stared out the windshield of James’ car. Even through the heavily tinted windows, I could see two massive creatures perched in front of a large, opened gate. The one on the right looked similar to a husky. Its fur was pale grey with patches of darker black coating its back. He had icy blue eyes that were almost white, and I couldn’t peel my eyes away. The one on the right was a larger, chocolate brown colored wolf with yellow eyes. James turned towards me with a smirk on his face, “Welcome to my world, sweetheart.”The car slowly pulled through the gates, passing by the two wolves that were even more massive up close. I wanted to roll my window down to get a better look but decided against it. I know nothing about werewolf etiquette. I think the hinge of my jaw was broken because my mouth refused to close the nearer we drove towards two large white tents. The sea of people that were filing beneath them were the mos

  • A Marriage of Convenience   Worth it

The look on Alpha Conan’s face was worth whatever repercussions that might follow my comment. His jaw tightened as he tipped his face up, as if that would make him seem tougher than he actually was. His navy-blue eyes sparked with fury as his cheeks flushed crimson. James’ fingers brushed the inside of my thigh, and I glanced over, seeing him smirking at me. “Excuse me?” Conan muttered after opening and closing his mouth like a fish out of water. I widened my eyes, playing into the fake nicety, “Did I misunderstand what you’d said before? It seemed as if you were disrespecting my mate, but he’s an Alpha, just like you.”The tense moment was broken when Alpha Xaden began speaking through a microphone. “Welcome everyone to the eighty-sixth annual Gathering of the wolves,” he started as applause sounded around us.“Tonight, we celebrate the Goddess’ gift to us. Whether you are already mated, or searching for your other half; she has blessed us with the gift of eternal happiness and

  • A Marriage of Convenience   Changing(James POV)

The soft music surrounds us as I hold Rosalind in my arms. Her skin is so warm and soft everywhere my fingers touch.I’m fascinated with her. For years, I was blinded by anger. I was angry at the world, angry at whomever had brutally attacked my pack, but most importantly; I was angry at the Goddess. She’d given me a mate, only to take her away almost instantly. My bond with Marina was short lived. The pull, the sparks, the desire; it was all so brief I hardly remember it. I spent years longing for those tiny moments back. Hours I spent by her bedside, praying to our Goddess to bring her back to me, only for her to send me a second mate who just so happened to be my own wife. I don’t like to believe in fate, but for some reason, Rosalind was placed in my path on that fateful night. As if the Goddess had planned it all so perfectly. If only she’d offer me some guidance now. “Are you sure this is real?” Rosalind’s soft voice reaches my ears despite the noise all around us. Her face

  • A Marriage of Convenience   Bitter pill

My breathing halted as James’ fingertips pulled the thin fabric of my thong to the side. The cool night air sent a shiver down my spine, but the heat from James’ hands as they gripped my thighs sent warmth throughout my body. I’ve never done anything like this. Not sexually or anything in such a public space. I’ve imagined James between my legs hundreds of times over the last few years, but nothing compares to the way it feels right now. Even with the looming threat of someone finding us, I can’t bring myself to stop him. A man like James doesn’t get on his knees. You kneel for him. He demands attention. But as his emerald eyes clash with mine; I realize that he’s offering me an exchange of power. “What do you want, Rosalind?” My name rolled off his tongue in a deep rasp as if he were barely holding it together. I released a shaky breath as he pressed his lips against the inside of my thigh. “I need words, sweetheart. Tell me what you want,” James nipped my skin, sending another

  • A Marriage of Convenience   Feel everything

The entire ride home was silent. Not another word was spoken between the two of us, but words weren’t needed.I could feel everything. He was second guessing everything that had happened between us and all it took was a single tearful phone call from Marina.James couldn’t look at me, not that I wanted him to. My eyes were probably bloodshot from fighting the tears that threatened to spill down my cheeks. I hated crying in front of him. There was a time years ago that I’d promised myself I’d never cry in front of him again. That was after he’d called me into Marina’s room to berate me for not making sure that her pillows were changed. He was so angry, telling me that I was an incompetent doctor and he’d regretted choosing me as his wife. His words broke something in me that day, and tears streamed down my cheeks. That had made him angrier. He scoffed at me, shaking his head as he told me how pathetic it was that I was crying when I was awake and well.I didn’t know that man anymore. O

  • A Marriage of Convenience   Always win

The sound of loud knocking against the front door had my face scrunching in pain. Every bang bounced around the inside of my skull, creating one of the worst headaches I’ve ever experienced. My eyes were still closed, and after a few tries, I forced them open to see that I was on the floor of the foyer.Lingering crackles from the fireplace even irritated the throbbing in my head.“Rosa,” Chris’ voice came from the other side of the door, “We’re going to be late.”Late? The expensive empty bottle of wine stared at me from where it was tipped over on the plush rug. It was as if it were staring at me, reminding me of my poor decisions last night. Especially now that Chris is at my door for some reason saying that I’m late for something.Pushing myself off the ground, I wince, feeling the intensity of my bad decisions last night.“One minute,” my voice sounded foreign and scratchy.“Could you at least let me in while you finish getting ready? It’s raining,” Chris groaned.Scooping the b

I glanced in the fold down mirror of Chris’ car, wincing when I saw my reflection in natural lighting. My eyes still held tinges of pink streaks and the puffiness hadn’t gone down at all.The only consolation is that Chris wasn’t lying about his hangover cure. My stomach was no longer rolling with nausea and my headache had dulled down to a brain fog.“Do you think it’s frowned upon to wear glasses inside of a church?”Chris snorted, “Yes. But who the fuck cares? If his almighty greatness can forgive murderers, he can forgive you for wearing sunglasses to church.”My whole body deflated at the thought of my mother ordering them off before ranting about why in the world I thought it would be appropriate to not only wear the sunglasses, but to get drunk enough to need them the night before Easter.I spotted her the moment we stepped out of the car. My mother was wearing a beige satin dress with long lace sleeves. Her shoes matched perfectly, and it appeared she’d called the on-demand ha

One Year Later“I’ll never get over seeing you like this,” Shawn wrapped his arms around my body, his hands smoothing over the growing bump that used to be my toned stomach. “And this dress makes you look even more ravishing.”My cheeks heated as he thrust his hips against my backside to show just how much he actually enjoyed seeing me swollen with his child. Six months ago, I found out we were pregnant. Fear gripped my soul at the prospect of becoming a mother, mostly because this came out of left field. We’d been married for six months, and hadn’t been actively trying, but life seems to have a way of paving the way for surprises. “Later,” I peck his cheek, bringing my thumb up to wipe away the light red stain from my lipstick, “We are going to be late.”“Are you sure you want to do this?” Shawn stood up straight, adjusting his tie, while I smoothed out the bunching in my glittering red dress. He wore a black suit with a matching red tie, and we were about to be going to our first G

How?I stare at the card on the ground. Scribbled letters stare back at me in writing that I’d never forget. I memorized the way his pen strokes over paper. I can see where he wrote softer versus where the pen dug deeper into the cardstock. Our door was still closed, but I didn’t know how much time I had before Shawn returned. My heart was in my throat as I reached for the card, staring at the words written inside until my eyes blurred.Rosa, I am not writing you this to hurt you more than I already have, and as you already know, I’m not very good at articulating my feelings. I hope you’ll understand what I’m trying to say despite knowing that this will be a string of words that probably won’t make sense by the time I’m finished. I don’t deserve your forgiveness, nor do I expect it. I realized after Marina and I destroyed your wolf that I had made the wrong decision. I knew that Marina had used a powerful spell on me, and I didn’t care. I allowed the anger and pain from

  • A Marriage of Convenience   Mr. and Mrs. Shawn Pierce

I let out an emotional chuckle, fighting the urge to cry.“I remember the first time you and I met. Chris practically dragged me over to your house to hang out, but I was terrified. The thought of being with someone famous made my skin feel itchy. I was just a poor kid with a shitty family life, and I was walking into a pristine mansion. But the moment I walked through those doors, your pale blue eyes, that reminded me of the sky when you look at it through the clouds, met mine, and you said, “You look like you could use some tea.”I let out another laugh, the memory coming back to me like it was yesterday.“You grabbed my hand and dragged me to your bedroom, ignoring Chris’ shouts, and pushed me into one of your chairs beside Mr. Giggles and Sir Pounce-A-Lot. We spent two hours talking over imaginary tea like we were old friends,” Shawn looked up towards the sky, his throat bobbing before returning his gaze to mine. “I didn’t know why I wanted so badly to have a tea party every day f

  • A Marriage of Convenience   Three years ago

Two Years LaterThree years ago, my ex-husbands mistress woke up from a coma. Three years ago, I asked James Wood for a divorce. Three years ago, my life changed drastically. I fell apart, picked myself up, rinse, and repeat. But today; I’m healing. “You look so beautiful,” Chris’ girlfriend Sienna covers her mouth with both of her hands. Her chocolate brown eyes shimmer with tears, and mine instantly well with my own. Fanning my face, I take a deep breath, “Is this real? I still don’t think it’s real.”“Girl,” she steps closer to me, placing her hands against my arms, and spinning me around to look in the mirror. My hair has grown back out, even longer than before and falls just below my breasts. It’s finally back to blonde, but I keep a shadow root to remind myself of the hell I’ve overcame. A small nod to the time I spent in that cabin pretending to be someone else. I chose a subtle smokey eye for a more natural look. Warm browns bring out my blue eyes, highlighting the flecks

  • A Marriage of Convenience   Get out of here

Chris is whistling in the kitchen, the aroma of coffee making my mouth water as I step into the open living room. Shawn came out first, walking down to the bathroom for a quick shower. “Coffee?” Chris already has a mug prepared, offering it out to me, “They didn’t have the creamer you liked when I was at the market. I hope you don’t mind plain vanilla.”It wasn’t my favorite, but I couldn’t complain much. “It’s fine,” I grabbed the mug, lifting it to my lips to bid myself an extra few seconds. “Thank you.”“If only I’d have bought ear plugs instead of that creamer,” he shakes his head, sighing dramatically.I choke, sputtering coffee over the side of the mug, and my hand, “You… You heard all that?”Chris sits his mug on the counter, crossing his arms over his chest, “Unfortunately so. The walls in this place are thinner than a fucking sheet of tissue paper. I’m half tempted to file a formal complaint against the builder.” I snort. I had heard Chris watching porn a few times through

I wake to the feeling of eyes on me. My heart begins to palpitate, and panic seizes me. “Rosie,” I hear the faint sound of a voice, but I’m terrified to open my eyes. “I don’t want to go back,” I whisper, feeling emotion clog my throat. “Please.”“Rosie, it’s me,” Shawn’s voice filters through the panic, and I quickly throw my head over my shoulder. It takes a few minutes for my heart rate to slow as I lock eyes with Shawn. Memories of last night hit me like a freight train, and the panic settles beneath my skin once more, but it’s different. I’m safe, and that’s what matters. “What’s going on, baby?” Shawn’s fingers hesitate before he reaches up, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “I thought he found me,” my voice breaks. “Hey,” Shawn’s fingers cup my chin, holding it with such delicacy, “He won’t get to you again. I’ll make sure of it. You don’t have to worry anymore. I won’t hesitate next time.”“I hate that he still has this effect on me.”“There is no timetable to hea

Another growl bubbles from his chest as he scoops me up, my legs wrapping around his waist, and my heart nearly jackhammering out of my chest. I’ve dreamed of this moment since puberty. Maybe not this exact scenario, but Shawn wanting me. His lips on me. And I as I grew older, those innocent desires turned into something more sensual. The first time I ever touched myself was to the thought of this man who has his lips pressed against my throat. My back hits the thick quilt covering my bed, and I whimper as Shawn pulls away, looking down at me with a mixture of longing and fear in his eyes. “Are you sure about this?” his voice is bathed in fear, and I can practically see how fast his heart is beating from the pulse point on his throat. “Make me forget him, Shawn.” My voice is low and hoarse. “I want you.”“Do you know how long I’ve waited to hear those words?” Shawn hisses through gritted teeth, his strong body hovering over mine. My fingers found the hem of his shirt, slowly lift

“You have to be kidding me,” Chris groans at Shawn, his face twisting with annoyance. Flour clings to almost every surface, and the kitchen is going to need a deep clean, but this is the most fun I’ve had in months. It’s my life by Bon Jovi blares from the small radio set up on the countertop. “What?” Shawn shimmies his shoulders. “This is a classic, sir. You not enjoying it is just a sign of your bad taste.”“My tastes are modernly defined,” he narrows his eyes.“That’s just a fancy way of saying they’re crap.”“Says you,” he waggles a finger in my direction. A bowl of brownie batter is wrapped in my arms, but Shawn snags it away, sitting it atop the counter before lacing his fingers with mine. Our arms moved back and forth, palms attached, and I felt my lips pull into the first real smile since we’ve been here. “It’s my LIFFFFEEEE,” Shawn sang off key, “It’s now or never.”“I AIN’T GONNA LIVE FOREVER.”“I just wanna live while I’m alive,” Shawn spins me in a circle, tipping me

We’ve been here for six weeks. Six weeks I’ve spent staring at the walls of this cabin expecting the boogeyman with shimmering green eyes to pop out at any moment.Once the shock of being flown here wore off, fear settled beneath my skin like a poisonous snake. I plastered a smile on my face for Chris and Shawn, but the days have been long, and the nights… even longer.I’ve learned the sounds of the forest surrounding us. The calls from the birds that chirp from the trees and the geese on the lake. Some days, the wind pushes the water against the shoreline, the sound of crashing startling me.I hate what I’ve become. It’s sickening to think that once upon a time, I was just a girl with the ambitious thought that she could convince her husband to love her.Now I’m afraid of my own shadow.“Rosa-lindddd,” Chris singsongs my real name, and I ignore him.Rosalind was dead. I was Rose now.I hated both versions of myself. The hopeful one that was naïve enough to believe in fairytales, and
