TWO-TIMING

A tempest of emotions swirled within me. What the hell was Patrick doing here? And why was Rosette calling him “babe”? Was this some sort of cruel joke?

“Patrick, what are you doing here?” I demanded, struggling to mask the hurt and curiosity in my voice.

Rosette shot him a look, her lips pressed into a thin line, her eyes flicking between us like a ticking clock. The strange glances from Lilac, Fatimah, and our other coworkers only intensified the gnawing anxiety in my gut.

“Handle this,” Rosette said tersely, her tone sharp as glass.

Patrick stepped toward me, his grip tightening around my arm as he yanked me away from the group. Pain shot through me, but I fought to free myself from his grasp.

“Let go of me, you lying cheat!” I shouted, my palm striking his cheek with a crack that silenced the room. Gasps rippled through the air, every pair of eyes locked on us in stunned disbelief.

“Are you done?” Patrick snapped, his jaw tight, the warmth I once loved in his brown eyes replaced by a chilling coldness.

“What is going on? Why are you with Rosette? Why was she calling you *babe*?” I asked, my voice cracking under the weight of my desperation.

“I love Rosette,” he said, disturbingly calm. “And I plan to marry her.”

Each word felt like a deliberate dagger, sharp and final.

My hands flew to my mouth, trying to suppress the hot tears welling in my eyes. This couldn’t be real. How long had he been seeing her? How could he do this?

“You love her? What about me, Patrick? You once loved me!” My voice trembled with rage and sorrow as I pounded my fists against his chest, sending him stumbling back.

“Why would you stand in front of me and say you love her?” I demanded, my heart aching with disbelief and betrayal.

He stared at me, utterly unfazed. “Listen, Lauren, I thought we were over this. I broke up with you. I owe you nothing.”

“Was she the reason you ended our relationship after three years?” I whispered, but he avoided my gaze, silence hanging between us like a suffocating weight.

“Stop this, Lauren. You're embarrassing yourself. Just get over it,” he said, his tone dripping with annoyance.

My stomach churned at his words. “Get over it?” I scoffed. “You’ve been cheating on me all along, haven’t you?”

“How long?”

“Excuse me?” He feigned confusion, but guilt was etched into his face.

“How long has this been going on? Be truthful for once, Patrick,” I pleaded, my voice catching in my throat.

He ran a hand through his hair, his expression wavering. “A year now,” he admitted, his words slicing through me like a blade.

“You bastard,” I whispered, tears carving hot trails down my cheeks. How had I been so blind?

“I’m sorry,” he said, though his tone was anything but apologetic. “But Rosette is my ticket to my dream. Her family is rich, and her father promised to invest in me. You were only going to drag me down.”

His words burned like acid, each one reducing my worth to nothing in his eyes.

“Babe!” Rosette called, her voice a syrupy sing-song. Patrick turned toward her, his entire demeanor shifting to something bright and cheerful.

“I’m coming, my love,” he replied, flashing her a smile.

He turned back to me, his expression cold and dismissive. “Look, Lauren, I’m sorry. Deep down, you knew this wasn’t going to work. We were never meant to be.”

As he patted my shoulder, I flinched, the warmth of his touch fading like an echo as he walked away.

I stood frozen, watching him embrace Rosette, their kiss dripping with mockery.

Tears blurred my vision, spilling faster than I could wipe them away. They refused to stop.

“Miss,” the van driver called out, annoyance lacing his voice. “Are you getting your luggage or not?”

I forced myself forward, numb as he yanked my suitcase from the trunk and thrust it into my hands. Everyone else had already headed inside, leaving me utterly alone.

I sank to the ground, my knees pressed to my chest, sobbing uncontrollably. The murmurs of staff and guests faded into a distant hum, the world itself moving on without me.

“What’s wrong with her?” I heard someone ask, their voice distant, like an echo in the fog.

After what felt like hours, I summoned the courage to stand, my tears spent. I grabbed my suitcase and rolled it toward the entrance.

Halfway there, something snapped.

“God, it shouldn’t—” I murmured, stopping to check my luggage. One of the wheels had come off. I sighed, glancing around for where it had rolled off to.

There it was, wedged near a flower pot at the edge of the pavement. As I walked toward it, I stopped short, noticing a pair of feet blocking my way.

“Uh, excuse me, sir, would you mind moving your feet…?”

The words caught in my throat. I looked up and was met by a pair of striking green eyes that seemed to pierce right through me, reflecting a mix of confusion and intrigue.

How do you describe beauty like this? He wasn’t just handsome; he was magnetic, the kind of man who turned heads without trying.

His dark hair, slicked back with precision, was undone only by two rebellious strands framing his chiseled face. His olive skin seemed to glow in the warm evening light, contrasting with the black sleeves of his shirt, rolled up to reveal strong, tattooed forearms.

An intricate dragon sprawled across his skin, its scales shimmering with life, as if it told a story of its own.

“And you are?” he asked, his voice cold but rough, snapping me out of my daze.

“Your feet, sir—they're in the way,” I managed, my voice barely steady.

He glanced down, moving his feet just enough for me to pass. I bent to retrieve the wheel, but a strange flutter stirred in my stomach. There was something about him—an energy that both excited and terrified me.

“Thanks,” I said, straightening up, clutching the wheel.

Without a word, he turned and walked away, muttering into his phone. “There are a lot of strange people at this resort,” he said, annoyance clear in his tone.

After much struggle, I finally reached my room—a cozy two-bedroom suite. Everyone else had paired up, leaving me alone.

I didn’t mind. Privacy was welcome. I needed space to recharge.

Just as I began to settle in, an invitation slid under the door. A party tonight. I groaned.

The last thing I wanted was to attend a noisy gathering where I’d be a wallflower. Sleep seemed far more appealing.

But maybe… maybe a distraction wasn’t the worst idea. With a reluctant sigh, I decided to give it a shot.

After all, what did I have to lose?

THE NEW BOYFRIEND~LAUREN~I slipped into my sleek black dress—the one I’d worn to my best friend’s wedding. As I straightened my hair and stepped into matching silver heels, I caught my reflection in the mirror. My glasses framed my face, and though I’d never thought of myself as glamorous, tonight I felt just a little confident. Dressing up wasn’t the problem; it was the judgment that came with it. And tonight, with everything that had happened, I wasn’t sure I could stomach it. Grabbing my silver purse, I took a deep breath and left my room. The resort's hallway stretched before me, leading toward the sound of chatter in the garden. Each step felt heavier, a reminder of the betrayal I was trying so hard to ignore. Rosette and Patrick’s faces flashed in my mind, and I silently prayed I wouldn’t run into them tonight. The garden was filled with elegantly dressed guests, their polished appearances marking them as anything but ordinary. My coworkers—Lilac, Fatimah, and Malcolm

I couldn’t blame them—it wasn’t every day you pointed to a man who looked like that and claimed he was yours. Now that I’d taken a proper look at him, he was clearly out of my league. “You mean him?” Rosette asked, her brows raised as if she hadn’t heard me correctly. “Yes, Rose. That’s him. My boyfriend,” I said, forcing the words out as casually as I could manage. Patrick narrowed his eyes suspiciously. I could feel his disbelief piercing through me, but I refused to meet his gaze. I wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of questioning me, even if I was inwardly screaming at myself for the lie. I had just told my ex and his fiancée that a complete stranger—a man I’d never spoken to in my life—was my boyfriend. What was I thinking?I prayed silently that they wouldn’t ask me to talk to him. PLAY ALONG.~ALEXANDRO'S POV ~The call came late last night, dragging me into yet another meaningless gala. Mario's words had been clear: my presence was non-negotiable. A luxurious resort. A room full of ambitious elites. A night of clinking glasses and false laughter. It was the last place I wanted to be, but the stakes were too high to ignore. The merger hinged on this event, and if enduring a parade of shallow pleasantries was the price to pay, so be it. I'd built my empire on sacrifices far greater than this. But the resignation didn't stop the irritation from simmering. That was until I saw her. The woman from the garden. She'd caught my eye earlier, strolling amidst the manicured grass like she didn't belong. Her hazel eyes had been a storm of exhaustion and defiance, a look that lingered in my mind long after she disappeared. And now, here she was again, standing awkwardly in this sea of pretense. Her dress—pale lavender and poorly fitted—betrayed her. It slumpe

Chapter 6THE FIRST CONVERSATION. ~ALEXANDRO'S POV~ I had to admit it—Lauren intrigued me. It wasn't just her hasty decision to rope me into her messy situation at the gala, though that had certainly grabbed my attention. No, it was the vulnerability she tried so desperately to hide beneath her sharp words and stubborn act. She had no idea what she was doing, and yet she refused to back down. That kind of stubbornness was rare. Foolish, but rare. That was exactly why I found myself walking toward her, coffee cup in hand, as she lounged on a private corner of the resort's sun deck. She hadn't noticed me yet, too absorbed in her phone. The faint frown on her face suggested she was either plotting her next move or regretting the one she'd already made. "Still strategizing, or just basking in your latest success?" I asked, breaking the silence. Her head snapped up, her wide brown eyes locking onto mine. For a moment, she looked genuinely startled. "I wasn't—" She stoppe

"Yes?" "You're trending," Mario said, his tone far too amused for my liking. I frowned. "Trending?" "Don't play dumb, Alexandro," he chided. "The internet's practically on fire. 'Trillionaire Playboy Spotted with Mystery Woman.' Does that ring a bell?" I sighed, already regretting my decision to indulge Lauren's lie. "What's the angle?" "Multiple," Mario replied. "Some are speculating she's your secret girlfriend. Others think it's a PR stunt to distract from the merger." He chuckled. "A few even believe she's a runaway heiress." "A runaway heiress?" I repeated, pinching the bridge of my nose. "That's creative." "You know how tabloids are," Mario said. "They'll spin anything into a story. But you might want to keep an eye on this one. THE TEAM DINNER~LAUREN’S POV~The resort’s private dining room was breathtaking—vaulted ceilings, chandeliers sparkling like constellations, and an oak table dressed as if for royalty. But all I could feel was the pressure pulling tighter with every glance thrown my way. I took my seat near the middle, where I could feel the weight of everyone’s attention without making it obvious. Across from me, Lilac and Fatimah exchanged smirks like they had some private joke at my expense. Rosette sat at the head of the table, perfectly poised, her wine glass in hand like a queen surveying her court. Malcolm was two seats away, barely acknowledging me, but I caught him sneaking glances when no one was looking. Then there was Patrick. He was next to Rosette, of course, with that smug look on his face that made my stomach churn. I couldn’t believe I’d once been so in love with him, so blind to the man he was. A TIME FOR MYSELF.~LAUREN’S POV~The first rays of morning light filtered through the sheer curtains, golden and warm, but my thoughts were far from serene. I stared at the ceiling, trying to shake off the leftovers of last night—the dinner, the drama, and Alexandro’s maddening smirk. His touch, his words, even the way he had looked at me—it was too much. I sat up, groaning into my hands. This trip was supposed to be my escape, a chance to recover from heartbreak and find some clearness. Instead, it had turned into a stage for mind games and jealousy-fueled power plays. WORK DRAMA.~LAUREN’S POV~ I hated being late. Rosette was going to have my head for this. Just three days before the big break, I was already imagining the lecture waiting for me at work. I couldn’t wait to finish this project and head home for Christmas. Although I knew my family would be disappointed I’d be coming home alone, it was for the best. The sharp ding of the bell over the café counter pulled me out of my thoughts. “Miss, your cappuccino is ready,” the barista called with a bright smile. “Thank God,” I murmured under my breath, weaving through the small crowd to the counter. “One cream-filled cappuccino,” she said as she handed it over, her cheerful demeanor catching me off guard. I smiled back, pleasantly surprised. “Thank you.” This café had stepped up its game. Last time I was here, the staff couldn’t care less about customer service. It felt like I’d had to beg just to get a simple latte. But these new hires? They might make me a regular again. Balanc

A PAWN AND NOTHING.~ALEXANDRO’S POV~I stared at the text Lauren had sent me two nights ago, the words replaying in my head like an insult. She wanted out. She wanted to end things before they’d even truly begun. My jaw clenched as I tightened my grip on the phone. She thought she could walk away from me, just like that. How naive. This wasn’t over—not by a long shot. Lauren might have forgotten, but I hadn’t. She was mine. And my claim on her wasn’t something she could ignore or erase with a few words in a message. Nobody ends things with me. Nobody. I am Alexandro Lex Castello. I call the shots, not her. The audacity she had to think she could sever ties without my permission burned in my chest, igniting a slow, simmering rage. Did she think I’d let her go that easily? That she could step away from this arrangement without consequences? She was going to pay for this disrespect. And I’d make sure Lauren understood—no, remembered—exactly who owned her and why she could

You don’t just wake up one day and stop caring about someone who was such a huge part of your life. That’s not how it works.”“I know that,” I snapped, frustration bubbling up. “But it’s been weeks, Sophia. How am I still here? Why can’t I just move on like he has?”She tilted her head, studying me for a moment before answering. “You think Patrick’s moved on just because he’s pretending to? Lauren, that’s not how it works for him either. A CLEAN START. ~LAUREN’S POV~The cab pulled up in front of my apartment building. A genuine smile spread across my face as I stepped out, paid the fare and offloaded my luggage. “Home sweet home,” I whispered, a wave of relief washing over me. Dragging my suitcase behind me, I made my way toward the lobby. Isaac, the apartment’s friendly security guard, greeted me with his signature warm smile as I stepped inside. “I thought you’d be gone for a while,” Isaac said, holding a steaming cup of coffee. “Well, not with all this luggage, Isaac. Trust me, I missed my bed too much,” I replied with a grin. Isaac was easily my favorite person in the building—funny, kind, and always hardworking. Don’t get me wrong, the other tenants weren’t bad, but I didn’t socialize much with them. Some of them thought I was stuck-up, a sentiment Maddison from the third floor was only too happy to fuel during her little gatherings. “So, how was it?” Isaac asked, leaning casually on the counter.

CASTELLO LEGACY.~ALEXANDRO’S POV.~The ball I tossed across the room bounced back to me, and I caught it with ease. My mind, however, was far from whatever Mario was ranting about on the other end of the line. “Lex, are you even listening?” Mario asked, his tone laced with suspicion. “Yeah, yeah. Go on,” I replied distractedly, my attention still on the ball as I continued tossing it in rhythm. The merger had been a success. Despite the opposition, I, Alexandro "Lex" Castello, always got what I wanted. It wasn’t about negotiations; it was about leverage. They could either accept my offer or lose it all. No middle ground. “You’re ‘not’ listening,” Mario said, exhaling audibly into the phone. A grin tugged at the corners of my lips. Even without seeing him, I could picture the frustration etched on his face. Mario and I had been through everything together. He was my best friend, my brother in all but blood. Whenever I got too deep into something, he was always the one to pu

A LONG RIDE.~LAUREN’S POV~I stood in the resort lobby, gripping my luggage tightly. Finally, this nightmare of a vacation was over. I was going home. Home to my cozy bed and, most importantly, away from people. No offense, but this trip had been far from enjoyable. It wouldn’t have been so bad if I hadn’t been forced to watch my ex and his fiancée flaunting their so-called love every chance they got. And Alexandro... well, he almost had me fooled. For a second, I thought love might be possible again, but clearly, I was wrong. My heart had been broken too many times to believe in such things anymore. “Too bad we’re leaving,” Lilac sighed, her eyes lingering on one of the resort staff. The guy grinned sheepishly at her, clearly charmed. We all knew why he was smiling, and it wasn’t because he was just doing his job. “Christmas is coming,” one of my coworkers added. “Time to spend with friends and family.” Christmas. The holiday I was supposed to spend with someone specia

A PUZZLE OF FEELINGS.~LAUREN’S POV~ The days at the resort passed in a blur, each one feeling more exhausting than the last. Alexandro made it his mission to drag me to every event and occasion requiring his presence, while all I wanted was to stay indoors and avoid everyone—especially him. After my last encounter with Rosette, her venomous words still stayed in my mind. I couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that she might be right about some things. I was beginning to have expectations about this fake relationship, and I hated myself for it. The idea of Alexandro using me just to pass the time filled me with anger I couldn’t quite understand. And now, here I sat at yet another social gathering, glaring at the women surrounding Alexandro. “Get a grip, Lauren,” I muttered to myself, gripping the stem of my champagne glass tightly. “Remember, this isn’t real.” But no matter how much I told myself that, it felt like a lie. If I truly believed it, why couldn’t I look away from

UNEXPECTED WARM.~ALEXANDRO’S POV~ Lauren pulled away from me the moment we boarded the boat. She didn’t say a word, just wrapped her arms around herself and found a seat near the edge. Her gaze fixed on the dark waters, avoiding me entirely. She was angry. “You’re angry,” I said, keeping my voice low so the others wouldn’t hear. “Well, congratulations for noticing that,” she shot back, her tone sharp, her eyes still refusing to meet mine. A smirk tugged at the corner of my lips. Her frustration amused me more than I cared to admit. She reminded me of a child whose candy had been taken away—adorable, despite her clear annoyance. Before I could say more, my phone buzzed in my pocket, dragging my attention away. I pulled it out and glanced at the name flashing on the screen. Antonio. This late? It had better be important. I walked to the other side of the boat, away from the others, and answered. “This better be important for you to call me at this hour.” My tone was cal
