Chapter 83

Silence hung thick in the air, and my eyes met Charles’s. A mix of hurt and disappointment in them. I couldn’t find the words to respond, and a wave of exhaustion washed over me.

This was not my first rodeo with Charles. Whenever our arguments had to do with Steve, he would always take his side, probably because he loves him more than he ever loved me.

Unwilling to continue embarrassing myself, I rose from my seat and excused myself without uttering a single word, leaving Charles and his best friend in the dining room.

As I climbed up the staircase, the echoes of Charles’s hurtful words reverberated in my mind. It was a stark reminder of the nature of our arrangement. And Charles would never miss an opportunity to remind me whenever we have the littlest fights.
