DELIA
Sometimes, I just wished to be a stone; a gigantic boulder. I didn't have to breathe, or move, or think, or say anything, or have a fucked up job with crazy people around, I didn't even have to get married. Hehe.
I would just stay idle in one place, under winter, and spring.I lay on my bed that morning almost like a stone. I didn't do anything except blink when urged to. I tried staring at the wall but my watery eyes wouldn't let me.
I had stayed up all night thinking of what to do. The jobs around didn't pay well and my only source of a well-paid job was ruined by a crazy bitch who thought I snatched her boyfriend. For goodness sake, I didn't even know the guy, to begin with. I was just an attendant, attending to people, and that was all. NO MEN.
I managed to roll and when I did, my full body landed on the wooden floor and I hissed in pain.
So much for being idle.
I got up and sat back on my bed. I turned to my nightstand and unplugged my charging phone. I hadn't talked to Devin in some days and since he didn't call, I guessed he was very busy. I pressed the power button just to be welcomed by a notification; a new mail.
'That's new.' I thought and stood up. I bled to the bathroom, picked up my toothbrush, kissed it with some toothpaste, and introduced it into my mouth. While brushing, I decided to check the mail.
I double tapped on the mail icon and it directed me straight to the mail. I was so busy with my perfectly white teeth that the phone dropped from my hand into the wash basin.
Dang it.
As I was about to pick it up, I saw the subject of the mail; Elrod Group of Companies.
Huh?!
What could they have possibly sent me after pending my application for over a year? Maybe a rejection mail? I wasn't certain. Or they were giving suggestions on other jobs to take on?
Just check the damn message, silly.
I picked up the phone and clicked on the message.
"Dearest employee, we would be glad to inform you that your application has been successful----" I screamed without reading to the end. I scanned through and saw I was due to start the job in two days.My joy knew no bounds as I let out another round of screams and ran around the house. My mother dropped whatever she was doing in the kitchen and met me in the dining room. I showed her the message and we ended up screaming together.
"What's all the fuss about? I'm trying to get some sleep here and you ladies are preventing that." Kiki complained, rubbing her eyes.
"I swear, I'm gonna bring down the house tomorrow," Eva said grumpily and collapsed on the couch.
I ignored them and put up a serious expression.
"What? Why the long face? You just landed a fucking huge paying job and instead of you being happy, you're frowning.""Really? A huge paying job?" Kiki and Eva rushed to my side and embraced me.
"How huge? Five hundred thousand dollars? A million dollars? Oh tell me, sis, tell me." Kiki shook my stiff body ecstatically and I couldn't help but imagine the disappointment on her face when I shoot the bad news."I'm so happy for you, big sister. Now, we're going to be rich and no one will ever trample on us again." Eva placed her head on my shoulder. They were happy, I felt it. My mom seemed proud of me, and I felt it too.
"I'm not going." I sighed dejectedly and headed for one of the couches, walking a someone who just did a 24-hour job and never got paid.
"WHAT?!" I could feel the deadly glares they were dishing out and if looks could kill, I would have died that instant.
"I said I'm not going," I repeated sternly. We're all the way in California and my 'job' is as far as Barbados. You expect me to leave you guys and go that distance? Not working." I finalized and plonked on the couch, folding my hands and pouting my lips.
"Dear," my mother called out softly and sat beside me. "I understand how you feel. I mean, you literally grew up around your family. And no matter how broken and messed up we are, we're still family." She said softly. I looked at my sisters and found them nodding.
These girls would do anything to make me go get the job - the love of money.
"But, don't you want to make life better for this family of ours?"
"You know I do," I cut in. "I really do."
"Then, go get that which is rightfully yours. From your pay, no matter the distance, you will be able to make us happy and at the end of the year, you can come home for Thanksgiving and Christmas." She stroked my hair and hummed.
"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, Delia. Grab it or else, who knows? The next to come might be the worst. Yeah?"
"Yeah." I nodded and stood up, stretching as though I had just woken up from sleep.
"I have to reply to them and know of the arrangements they've made for my accommodation.""So, that means you're going?" Eva asked, sounding unsure.
I looked intently at her.
"Uhm... Yeah. I just mentioned accommodation, so that means I'm going." I replied. Her question seemed dumb to me but I tried to answer in a none offending way.The girls screamed, so loudly that my mom and I left the entire room for them to jubilate. I went to the room and brought out my laptop. I was able to reply to their message and I got a reply after five minutes.
They seemed desperate. Or maybe it's just my imagination and that was how the system worked.
****
After spending almost my entire day in my room, diluting the rules and regulations of the company, the manner of conduct, and my job as the personal assistant to the CEO, I decided to take a break.Who knew there was this much stuff to know? I could have learned all of these if I was assured I would get the job but no, they decided to wait two whole fucking years to give me the job.
I applied there in California two years back when there were slots opened and being a decent graduate of the business administration department, I was sure I would get the job. Later, I heard they relocated and that was the last of it. Every other place I applied to declined my request and that left me to menial jobs until I met Bruce. When he disappeared, I went back to my menial jobs, and now, this. This huge breakthrough. Somehow, I wanted to think it was all fake and unreal but gladly, they were authentic.
I shut down my laptop and changed into comfortable clothes.
I was going for a walk after a long time. Might be my last walk in my little town so I planned on savoring every tiny detail of it.I got to the park and sat on a bench. What caught my attention first were the swaying trees.
The trees, so caged yet so free. Dancing with the wind but never moving with it. Standing so tall, yet so invisible.I looked at the children running and falling about. They seemed free and cared less about anything in the world, except for their candies and toys and probably, their friends and family.
I wish I never grew up, I wish I had remained a child forever. I grew too fast, having seen my mom and dad brawl every day and taking the family upon my shoulders at the age of ten. I wished I was never born.
I felt a light flick on my shoulder but I paid no attention to it. Could have been one of the kids running or anyone hitting me by accident.
I felt it again and I turned. I didn't see anybody.
"Weird," I mouthed and focused back on the trees."So, you couldn't even investigate such a small mystery you call 'weird'. I'm disappointed." A voice came and my body froze on that spot.
It couldn't be.
DELIA "Devin!!" I screamed and jumped into his arms. He held himself so we wouldn't fall to the green grasses. Not bragging, but I have a lot of weight for someone who doesn't feed well. "Wow, you've sure changed." He said. I took that as a compliment but my head was taking it the wrong way. "I sure have. Nine months is not nine days." I said and pulled away from him. He didn't look bad, he even looked better than his brother. I thought. His full-figured build to tear out his expensive-looking mandarin collar shirt. His protruding lapis eyes shone brighter than ever and his thin lips were curved into a small smile. Why didn't I meet Devin first? I questioned myself over the past few months and I couldn't help but regret my decision of marrying Bruce instead of Devin. "Okay, quite checking me out." He jabbered and I snapped out of my thoughts. I playfully hit his elbow in embarrassment. Did he have to say that? "I wasn't checking you out. Just taking in details before you disapp
DELIA I tossed my phone aside before I ruined it. I couldn't afford to get a new one yet so I had to control my anger and drop it. I had a warm troubling bath and then brushed my teeth. Why would Bruce text me all of a sudden? And why did he even keep my number? "All this while, he didn't text me. Finally, something good is happening in my life and he wants to come back and ruin it. Not happening." I finalized and walked out of the bathroom after staring hard at my beautiful heart-shaped face. I could pass for a model because I was averagely tall and I had the looks. Not bragging but I'm definitely the lady any man would run back to. Since everything was already packed, all I did was take my huge box outside. I rolled it with less difficulty until I got to the living room. I met my dad having tea with his phone in his hand. "Must have been texting one of his mistresses." I thought to myself. "Good morning." I greeted and walked past him without waiting for his reply. Normally
DELIA The driver drove into an estate - Caribidreams Estate. The buildings all looked the same and would be difficult to tell apart. I watched carefully as he took several turns. I could easily get lost inside. The land mass was huge and there were lots of streets. "We're here." The mysterious guy announced and I alighted the car. I made sure to memorize the name of the street and the house number. He helped me with my luggage inside while I just trailed behind him. He seemed extremely cold and knowing my curiosity level, I didn't want to make things worse. When we got inside, he slammed my bag on the ground. Rude! He handed a card to me. "You can use the card to unlock the door or you can set a password." He stated simply and disappeared through the door. Wow! Much colder than I thought. He didn't even bother to show me around. If he was this cold, I wonder what the boss would be like. Maybe ten times icier. I shrugged and proceeded to view the apartment. I first located the
DELIA After having a body soothing shower, I changed into my transparent nighty and plopped down on my bed. My body felt more relaxed after I got comfortable and covered my skin with the thick duvet. It felt as though I was lying down on top of the world. I texted my mom with some voice notes about how demanding and stressful my day was. But I didn't mention meeting my classmate and the kiss. That would have seemed weird. After sending the necessary, I checked my mail for anything new and finding out there was no current news, I set an alarm and plugged my phone. Then, I laid down and let nature do its job. I dreamt of a great day at work, even though that seemed almost impossible with the people I've met but I still hoped. **** I turned to my side, moaning satisfactorily. I opened my eyes but closed them almost immediately, all thanks to the blinding brightness of the sun. I stretched my body and sat up. I checked the time and looked away. It was then it dawned on me. "Seven O
LEVI TERRA LUXURY ESTATE, BARBADOS. I watched her walk seductively in her undies toward me, a coquettish smile on her face. Her thick-looking body made me hard and I began to imagine the bad things I would do to her. "Hey tiger," She sat on my lap and kissed me slowly and gently. "Missed me?" She trailed kisses down my neck and I let out an irritated groan. I looked at her with hooded eyes when she pulled away with a smirk. I felt like kissing all parts of her face and leaving her body scattered with love bites and swollen lips. "Get up," I commanded and she did exactly that, going straight to her knees. She unbuckled my belt and stretched forth her hand into my pants, her warm hand reaching out to my d**k. She knew exactly what to do and how to do it and that was why I always had her around me. She stroked it gently from the inside and I threw my head backward. This lady knew how to work wonders on my stiff body. I enjoyed every movement
DELIA I stared at Clarence in disbelief. Did he think I was some kind of hörny bîtch? The nerves. "Get out." I retorted and pointed to the door. He chuckled and moved away. "Come on, stop acting casual, and let's get down to business." He tried to touch me but I slapped his hand away. "What do you take me for, Clarence? Huh?" I fired. He only gawked at me with a smug on his face. I wish I could punch that dirty thing off him. He thought I was playing hard to get and was hoping I would give in. "Well, I'll take it that you're shy. It's been ten fucking years and I guess you'll need time." He walked closer to me and leaned to my ear. "I know you missed my dîck. The earlier you accept that, the earlier we fûck it out." He whispered before disappearing through the door. I rolled my eyes and sat back in my seat. I wasn't going to let any imposter ruin my day. As I was going through some shipment files, I heard my phon
DELIA The elevator dinged and the door was opened, revealing a tall slender figure of a lady. I heaved a sigh of relief; Clarence didn't have any chance of flirting with me anymore. When we got to the ground floor, we all exited the elevator and went out separate ways. "Hi again, ma'am." I heard from behind me and turned. It was the lady from earlier. What was her name again? Yeah, Lisa."Hello, dear. Nice to meet you again." I greeted her warmly and she smiled. "You have a beautiful smile." I complimented and she blushed. Probably no female had ever told her that. "You're too kind with your words, ma'am. Thank you." She bowed slightly. I looked around, making sure nobody was watching us. It felt weird being bowed to. I wasn't a queen or anything related to royalty. "Wanna have lunch together?" I offered and she nodded in affirmation. We strolled side by side to the cafeteria which was already filled up with staff. Wow... It looked like high school all over. As we walked down t
LEVI "You understand, don't you?" I asked Javan as he stared blankly at me while I was explaining his schedule for the day. He was to take Delia to work, teach her to drive for some hours, and then drop her back at her apartment after closure. "Yes, sir." He replied tiredly. "What's with that look? You don't like being around girls or something? Or you just don't like her in particular?" "Not that I don't like her. I just prefer being around you. It's less talking and more driving. She looks like a talkative, honestly." He complained and I chuckled lightly. "It's just for a few days before I get her enrolled into a driving school." "Okay, boss." He sighed and departed. Such a kid in an adult man's body. Lately, we had been getting along. I mean, it was just yesterday we began talking normally, and now, we relate as though we've been talking for months. He was always grumpy when speaking but blunt too. I reached out for my second phone as it started ringing. It was the bastard t
DELIA "Did he tell you anything? Is it a business meeting or what? I don't understand why I have to dress up this pretty to go meet some other person." I groaned. Levi and Javan were always up to something crazy and I was sometimes scared of them. "Stop speaking in my ear, sis. Just wait until we get to the meeting spot. You can ask the client yourself why we're going there." He said. I relaxed back in my seat because arguing with him was pointless. We got to a seven-star restaurant and boarded the elevator. To my surprise, we got to the last floor of the building. Javan told me to go on while he went down back. "Hopefully these guys aren't trying to sell me." I prayed as I clutched myself when a rush of chilly wind hit me. The place seemed empty until someone walked up to me to deliver a card. "Come forward," the card read. I smiled widely as I knew what was going on. He could have just said so in the first place. I walked forward and met a beautifully decorated table filled w
DELIA "I can't, babe. I have to go home and change first. Andrew needs a bath too. He ruined his clothes today and he can't sleep in them." I queried. Finally, he agreed with me. "But make sure you come back, okay?" He said and kissed me. "I will." I pinched his cheek and walked out with Andrew. Nobody had heard from Fallon, not even Levi's mother whom she came with. Hope she didn't kill herself somewhere. Or maybe she had gone home. Javan was still trying to locate her and hadn't reported any news to us yet. As I got down from the cab, my phone rang and it was Levi. "I just left five minutes ago. Missed me much?" "When are you coming back? Now?" "Not at all, in an hour or two." I headed for the apartment, smiling. I looked back and the cabby had driven away. "Come on, babe, don't do this to me," He begged. I laughed and just as I passed through the yard gate, I heard an explosion. My first instinct was to shield my baby. *****LEVII heard an explosion and then a scream foll
DELIA "Javan, you've gotten so lean. Is Levi stressing you out?" Mrs. Elrod exclaimed. She touched Javan all over to his dismay. Levi and I laughed at him while he frowned. "I'll make sure to spank his arse later, okay?" She smiled. "So, Delia," She faced me. I stopped smiling and put on a serious expression. "How did you meet my son?""I met him at College during our first year," I replied. "So, how came about Andrew? You two are not married and he never mentioned you to me." She expressed worriedly. "It's more or less a complicated issue. He will give you the details of everything you want to know. Right, dear?" I touched his shoulder and he nodded. He was still nervous but he should be the one to break everything to her since they were closer than any other person in the room. We were all having a good time when the door was opened harshly. We all turned to the rude intruder and found Fallon standing at the door. Her hair was quite messy and her eyes seemed red and heavy. W
DELIA I had a splendid time at the hospital with Levi over the weekend. He mustered up the courage and asked me out for real this time. The way he did it was funny and I ended up laughing up my energy. Who knew that the almighty Levi could be so nervous around me? I felt sad that I was leaving but I had to go to work. If I had listened to him and stayed throughout the week, the workload would have been too much on him whenever he resumed. I woke up early that Monday morning and prepared food for my boyfriend. He didn't like the hospital meals and he certainly didn't want to eat outside. So, yeah, it came down to making food for him. I also made the one that could last for Andrew till evening and I went to the hospital. "Good morning," I greeted as I stepped in."Good morning babe," He reciprocated. His eyes were on the screen of his laptop, probably trying to do some work while in the hospital. "You shouldn't be doing this," I frowned and laid Andrew beside him. "I can't let you
DELIA I finally knocked on the door and when I heard a reply, I opened the door and walked inside. Levi's head was buried inside a book. I felt like crying. A few weeks back, he was lying almost lifeless but there he was, stronger and healthier. All thanks to the almighty for sparing his life. "Hi," I said. He must have thought I was a nurse or a doctor and that's why he didn't bother to check. But after I made my entrance recognizable by speaking, he looked away from his book. A smile was plastered on my face as I moved toward him. "How are you feeling today?""Better than ever." He replied. "Uhm... Here. I got these for you. Hospital meals are terrible sometimes and so, I got you a meal." I stretched the hug package toward him and he accepted it. "Thanks. You saved me yesterday with the meal you sent through Javan. Thanks again." He said and I smiled. I was definitely planning on toasting Javan after now. I specifically told him not to mention my name and just say the food wa
LEVI "Thank you all so much. I feel so loved." I touched my chest in gratitude. Seeing my employees visiting me when I'm not well was something to be grateful for. It proved that I was a good boss to them and what better than having a good employer-employee relationship at a place of work? "Thank you very much. I really appreciate the gifts." "Get well soon, sir. We miss you a lot." One of them said. I didn't spot two significant in the crowd; Evans and Delia. I knew Evans hated me and was probably sulking somewhere because I was still alive but what I didn't understand was why Delia wouldn't come to see me. To be honest, she was the first person I was expecting to see. Was it that she didn't care if I died or not? Soon after the celebration of my coming back to life, everyone except Javan left. I sighed, I was hurt by her absence. Why was she bent on killing me? Why did I even bother waking up? "Delia made this," Javan stretched a bag toward me. I stared at it for some seconds b
DELIA Every day was busy for me, coupled with the fact that I had to take care of a baby. It wasn't easy at all. At work, I had to do the job of a CEO and also work my position. If not for Javan who was always there to look after Andrew, I would have broken down. The printing of the book was around the corner and Levi was still not up. He was the key part of everything and his condition always kept me up. I had developed insomnia and it was getting worse every day. I don't get sleep and even if I try to sleep, I don't do it enough. I don't sleep more than two hours a day. I was drowning in the pressure. It's in over my head. I don't know why I thought I could do this. But still, I couldn't find myself stopping. I was doing it because of Levi. I didn't want him to think of anything work when he wakes up. All he needed to do was rest, rest, and rest. No stress is allowed in his zone. When Javan walked into the office, I looked at him with hopeful eyes but he gently shook his head.
DELIA "How is he?" I asked, sniffing at the end of my question. Andrew was playing with my dress, chewing the buttons on it but I didn't bother. Javan looked at me and sighed. "Be honest with me, Javan. Don't think about lying because I will still find out." "The doctor said he might not make it out alive." He said with a deadpan expression. "There were lots of alcohol in his system. He is almost as good as dead." I sighed heavily as fresh tears rolled down my cheeks. "He can't do this to me. This is all my fault." I wept bitterly. "No, no, don't think like that. None of this is your fault. He was just reckless. We should just pray a miracle happens and he comes out alive." "I should have just called him after that night. He must have thought I was joking ot trying to play games with him. And you tell me not to blame myself?" I grabbed a tissue and blew into it. "It's not your fault. It's his fault for driving when drunk." He scoffed. "Don't worry about it." "What? I have al
LEVI I didn't know how many days but I hadn't gone to work since the club meeting. I was somehow devastated because I knew I would never come back to see Delia, despite the promise. But there was another thought in my head. What if she was just doing this to pay me back for what happened? What if she knew I really loved her and she wanted me to feel every atom of guilt and probably die of it? What if all those actions were fake and she just wanted to see me suffer? The hot, steamy night was all just a ploy then. But then again, I couldn't just conclude without confronting her. She hadn't called since that day and my assumptions were beginning to seem true. My heart ached a lot and my eyes watered. Why was she doing this? I looked to my side and picked up the half bottle of vodka. I had earlier finished six bottles and it wasn't afternoon yet. I had finished more than a crate in less than a week. I was gradually turning into a shadow of myself and there was no one to pull me out.
