Dealing with treason

With how late it was, we all rested for the rest of the day. The next day Walter left early in the morning with a guard for his audience with the king. The guard escorted him straight to the king's throne room. When there, the guards in front opened the doors and allowed him inside.

Walking into the throne room, Walter knelt before the king with his head bowed. The king smiled at Walter, "There's no need for formalities between us; feel free to be informal with me."

Walter got to his feet and thanked the king, "Thank you for your consideration, your Majesty, but respectfully, I would prefer to show proper respect to you."

"Very well, I won't force you to do something you're uncomfortable with. Now, let's get to the matter I summoned you for. You may have guessed already, but I called you here about your brother, Peter Hastus."

"May I ask what my brother has done, your Majesty?"

"It saddens me to say this, but he committed high treason."

Walter was shocked by what he heard, with an expression of disbelief at what he'd been told, "Treason? How's that even possible? What crime did he commit?"

"As you know, a member of your family is always the royal advisor, which was your brother's position. The first crime he committed is the negligence of his duty."

"How did he neglect his responsibilities? He was always attentive and paid attention to every little detail."

"He abandoned his position without notice and ran off with an elf." the king couldn't hold back from smiling as he said it.

Walter looked dumbstruck by what the king said, "What...?"

"You heard me correctly. Your brother eloped in the night with an elf girl."

"He abandoned his position to run off with an elf who will probably only live half as long as him...?"

"You're correct, which brings me to his second and most unforgivable crime. He secretly corresponded with this elf girl and even smuggled her inside the walls of Kiddra capital."

The king's expression then became more serious, "Now, to discuss the punishment for his treason. Because of how long the Hastuss have served the royal family, I believe banishment for your brother is more than fair. As for the punishment for the rest of the family, you and your family are to move to the capital, where you shall take your brother's position as the royal advisor."

Walter saw through what the king was planning, 'He clearly doesn't care that my brother ran off with some woman or broke one of our most sacred laws. He's just using this as an excuse to make me take the position of royal advisor since I turned it down in the past.'

"That's a more than fair punishment, your Majesty. As always, I will oblige and inform the Duchess."

"I'm glad to hear it. But before you leave, I also mentioned in my letter that I would like to meet your daughter. So, if possible, I would like to meet her later today."

"I would be happy to introduce you to her, your Majesty. I'll take my leave now."

Walter then exited the throne room and headed back to his room. When he got inside, Crimson and I were waiting for him inside. When Crimson saw him enter, she asked him, "What did the king want to discuss?"

"Your guess was right. He wanted to discuss Peter."

"Why? What happened?"

"The fool apparently ran off in the night with an elf."

"That doesn't sound like Peter."

"I've known him my entire life, so it doesn't surprise me to hear this. He's naturally gifted at politics and management, but he's always hated those things. Knowing him, he would have done anything he could to leave his position. So I guess meeting that girl was the push he needed."

"I hope he's happy with her and doesn't come to regret his decision."

"Knowing my brother, I highly doubt he'll regret it even for a second. He's very decisive like that."

Crimson sighed, "He's your brother, so you know him best."

"I should also mention that the king requested to meet Sash later today. I had no reason to refuse his request, so I agreed."

"Why does he want to see Sash?"

"He didn't say, but there's nothing to worry about."

"Ok, I'll trust you."

Hearing her say that, I couldn't help but think, 'But I don't trust him! Why would some old king want to see me?'

A couple of hours later, Crimson took me for a walk around the castle gardens, and a guard showed up, "Please excuse the interruption, but the king has requested Duke and Sasha Hastus to meet him in the throne room."

Crimson pulled a slightly irked expression before answering, "Yes, I'll head there right away."

The guard didn't leave our side and escorted us directly to the throne room door where Walter was waiting. Seeing us arrive, Walter asked Crimson, "Did you enjoy your walk around the castle?"

"Yes, we were just walking through the gardens before coming here."

As they talked, the guard suddenly butted in, "I'm sorry to interrupt, but his Majesty is waiting for the Duke and the young lady."

Walter stared at him, irritated, "Of course, we'll head in now."

Walter lifted me out of the pushchair, and the guard opened the door for us to enter. Walter walked up to the king and gave him a slight head bow since he couldn't kneel and bow with me in his arms.

I couldn't help but stare at the king. He was the first dragon I had seen who looked over 20. He looked like he was in his 40s, at least. Considering Walter was 371 and looked 20, I could only imagine how old the king was.

When the king saw me in Walter's arms, a light smile appeared on his face, "So this is your famous daughter, then? I've heard many stories and rumours about her, and I even asked the crown princess to be here so we could both see this generation's greatest talent."

When I heard him mention the crown princess, I suddenly noticed her standing to the side. She was a beautiful woman with pure pink hair. Both she and the king had pure pink eyes, which I had never seen before.

"You flatter us with your kind words."

"Think nothing of it, but I would like to know, is it true your daughter had already achieved her full form when she was only three months old?"

"No, your Majesty, she transformed during one of my lessons for my second son when she was only a month old."

"Is that so? Would it be possible for her to show us? If this is true, this would be an event that will be recorded in history."

"Of course, your majesty."

Walter kneeled down and placed me in front of him, "Sash, can you take on your full form for me?"

Seeing how serious Walter looked, I listened to him and nodded, seeing me agree, Walter stood up and took a step back.

Suddenly, I felt incredibly pressured, 'I feel really nervous right now! Why do they have to put me on the spot like this!?'

I try to clear my head and take a deep breath. Once I calmed down, I changed into my dragon form, and when the king saw it, he looked just as shocked as anyone else who had seen it.

Even the crown princess looked noticeably surprised instead of staying stoic in the corner. The king then said, "This is truly impressive! I don't think we'll ever see another child as talented as this for eras to come!"

I couldn't help but feel he was over-exaggerating, 'Is it really that impressive to change forms at a young age?'

Walter gave the king a fake smile, "Thank you, your majesty."

"It's a shame she wasn't born a man. If she were, I would have insisted that she marry the crown princess after her coming-of-age ceremony!"

Hearing him say that only made me sad, 'Like I needed more reasons to hate being reborn a girl...!'

The king suddenly got a mischievous grin, "Speaking of marriage, have you decided on her marriage partner yet?"

"No, your Majesty. I feel she's still too young for me to decide that."

"May I suggest we arrange for her partner to be the 3rd prince? It would help strengthen the bond between our families after the current fiasco."

Walter started to look nervous at his suggestion, "Thank you for your suggestion. However, I feel it's still too soon to decide this."

"What's too soon? They wouldn't marry until after her coming-of-age ceremony, and the 3rd prince will make an excellent marriage partner!"

"You're right, your Majesty, but-"

The king suddenly cut Walter off mid-sentence, "Then I'll take that as you agree to this marriage. I'll have someone send you the documents to sign later."

Witnessing everything that just happened, I was shocked by what just happened and changed back into my human form. Walter picked me up and started to walk out of the room, "Thank you, your Majesty. I'll take my leave now."

When exiting the room, Crimson was still waiting outside, "So what happened?"

Walter's expression was in the same state of shock as mine, "The king has arranged for Sash to marry the 3rd prince after her coming-of-age ceremony."

Crimson couldn't believe her ears when she heard him, "WHAT?! She's only nine months old! How can he arrange her marriage on his own like that?!"

"You know as well as I that this is a prevalent practice. We didn't have to suffer through this ourselves because we were just lucky to find each other. Not to mention it's the king's wishes, so we can't go against what he says."

"But there has to be something we can do?"

"I'm afraid not. The king seemed to be steadfast in his decision. He seemed eager to arrange it."

While they argued about the situation, my head was still reeling from it all, 'I can't believe I'm going to be forced to marry the 3rd prince when I'm older...'

A few months later, I was woken up by Crimson's voice, "Sash, you have to wake up! Don't you know what day it is? You can't sleep in today of all days!" I tried to ignore Crimson as best I could and pulled my blanket over my head, 'I don't care what day it is... I just want to sleep, so leave me alone! I'm trying to be depressed still...' Crimson pulled an exhausted face, "Sash, you remember it's your first birthday today, right? Don't forget you have your birthday party later today, and everyone will be there!" I didn't budge and kept trying to sleep, but Crimson didn't give up, "I guess you won't want all the presents everyone will be bringing with them. What a shame... I guess we'll have to give them away..." Hearing her say that, I couldn't stay still anymore. So I sprang out from under my blanket, giving Crimson a big smile, "Mommy!" Crimson couldn't hold back her laughter at my reaction, "Don't you wanna keep sleeping?" I shook my head while responding to her question, "Now

Later that day, Crimson took me back to my room to prepare me for the party. She changed my dress to one of the more fancy ones she kept hidden away for special occasions like today. But, despite putting me in one of her favourite dresses for me, Crimson still seemed upset by what happened with Dan earlier. 'That misunderstanding with Dan really has her upset still. Not even my adorable face is working to fix her anymore. All I can do is hope that the party can cheer her up. But just in case, I should keep trying to force my cuteness on her!' While Crimson was carrying me to put me in my pushchair, I could see how sad she was by the look on her face. So I decided to give cheering her up one last try before we left for the party. Before she put me down, I pulled myself up a little higher towards her face and kissed her cheek. After I did, she looked at me with a surprised look. Then, I simply gave her another big smile, "Love, yow!" Crimson finally smiled again with a slight chuckle

A couple of days later, Crimson received a letter from Clair inviting her to go over to her family estate, just as she had mentioned the day before. After reading the letter, Crimson came bursting through the living room door where I was spending time with Walter. Walter and I were startled by her dramatic entrance. Walter just about managed to push his shock aside to ask her, "What's got you so excited?!" Crimson's face was beaming with excitement, "Sash got an invitation to go on a play date from Lady Clair Kalious!" "The Barons Daughter? Why would Sash receive an invitation from the Kalious family?" "We met at Sash's party the other day. She has a two-year-old daughter that I think would make the perfect friend for Sash, and Lady Kalious agreed with me, not to mention that Sash seems to really like her!" "If that's the case, when are you planning to visit?" "I was hoping to take her the day after tomorrow!" "She has a lesson with me in the morning on that day. So you'll have

Time started to fly by, and before I knew it, I was already two. Since that time at the greenhouse where Crimson and Dan had a falling out, Dan had become increasingly distant from Crimson and me. But at the same time, my friendship with Tasha only grew from our first time meeting. So as I slowly got better at talking, I could speak to her a little more about everything that was going on and try to get her opinion on a couple of things from time to time. Because of how close we had gotten, she started coming for near-daily visits to my family estate after we moved in. While I was sitting in the living room with Crimson, a maid entered, "Excuse me, miss, Lady Clair and her daughter are here." "Tell Lady Clair to meet me in the parlour and escort her daughter to the tea room with Sasha." "Yes, miss." I followed the maid and waited in the tea room for Tasha. Finally, after a couple of minutes of waiting, Tasha burst into the room with her usual dramatic flair, "Sash!" She rushed to

When I woke up the next day, all my clothes had been changed while I was asleep. When I looked around the room, I saw Crimson sleeping on my bed with me so she could stay with me during the night. Looking at her, I noticed Dan was sleeping behind her on the chair next to my bed. I found it impressive that he managed to fall asleep sitting up. Knowing that they both stayed with me throughout the day and during the night made me feel happy, 'They keep surprising me. I don't think I'll ever get used to how much they care for me, but I'm glad to have it.' I shuffled closer to Crimson, hugged her, and went back to sleep. Crimson put her arms around me in her sleep as I did and cuddled me back. Later that day, while I was still recovering in bed, Tasha visited me out of the blue. She was noticeably upset went she barged through the door, "Sash!" She ran over and leapt at me, latching onto me with a hug, "I heard you were hurt really bad! We didn't have to wait long before a waiter came to our table with a three-tiered dessert tray with all our cakes on it and some cookies we didn't order, so I asked, "Why are there cookies too?" The waiter put the large tray tower on the table before answering, "These are complimentary for new customers! Please enjoy!" The waiter quickly left, and Tasha looked very happy to get free food, "I like this place even more now!" I smiled at how giddy she got over free cookies, "Yeah, me too!" As we each took a piece of cake and a fork, I noticed Tasha's maid and the two guards sitting beside us with nothing, "Didn't you order anything for yourself?" "No, miss, I'm only here to ensure you're both safe!" "What about you two?" The one guard answered for the both of them, "thank you for your consideration, Miss Sasha, but we're only here to keep guard." I couldn't help but feel bad that the three of them were sitting there watching us eat without anything to have themselves. So I took th

After that day, everything with my family and Tasha seemed perfect. Everything was like a dream, and before I knew it, two years had passed. Although Dan and I grew a lot closer, he still seemed a bit cold and distant, but he always made time to be around me and see how I was doing. Tasha had become more like an older sister over the last two years, especially considering how often she visits. My estate had essentially become her second home. She even stopped the night occasionally, although if it were left up to her, she wouldn't leave. Yesterday, we received a letter from the king informing us that the crown princess would be visiting in his stead and would arrive today. So Crimson and Walter have been preparing the estate yesterday and this morning, especially for her visit. When the royal carriage pulled up, several knights exited the carriage first, and then the princess. Crimson was waiting in front of the estate to greet her personally when she arrived, "Greetings, princess,

On the day of the ball, I walked out of the estate holding Crimson's hand. When we went to go to our family carriage, the royal carriage pulled up, and a knight exited the carriage and walked over to us, "Excuse me, Duchess, the king sent me in the royal carriage to personally escort you and the young lady to the ball personally!" Crimson looked surprised to see such a grand carriage sent to pick us up with a royal knight escort, "His majesty didn't need to go to such efforts. Our family carriage would have been more than enough!" "I'm afraid his majesty insisted that I escort you there. He said when his future daughter-in-law arrives, he wants everyone to see that she is a personal guest of the royal family, so no one will think of looking down on her during the ball." When the guard said future daughter-in-law, Crimson looked no

After the guard left, the king looked at Terry and me, "You should bring her up here and let her rest on the crown princess's throne." Terry looked at the king, surprised, "Are you sure, your majesty?" "Of course I am. My son has troubled her greatly. It's the least I can do." Terry then made his way up the stairs and placed me down on the throne beside the king. Once I was sat down, I said to the king, "Thank you." After an hour, the guard returned with two other guards dragging Larry by the arms, wearing special shackles that prevented him from using mana, casting spells, or changing forms. The two guards dragged Larry up to the king and dropped him to his knees. Larry looked up at the king and asked, "Father, what's the meaning of this?!" Without realising it, Larry's eyes were still in their pink state for the king to see, "I can see you actually had pink eyes this whole time." Larry then realised his mistake, "That's beside the point! Why have you ordered your guards to put

Over the next month, the guards set up the barrier like Larry told them to, which kept me from collecting the mana in the air. Finally, after that month was over, it came that time when Larry would normally give me some small amount of food. One of the guards in front of my cell received a call from Larry. When he finished talking, he turned to me and said, "His Highness said he won't be able to make it until later today, and because of your previous attempt to escape, he won't be bringing you this month's ration." I let out an amused huff, "He barely feeds me already. So why do I care if he misses one?" The guard didn't respond and turned back around to continue standing guard. Finally, after a few hours, it came time for the guards to change, but no one came in to relieve the current guard. After a few minutes of waiting, the guards in front of my cell became restless, "The next shift should be here by now. Those two in the evening shift are normally more punctual than this." "J

Larry would come back to the cave every week to try and convince me to sign the contract, but I refused every time. Finally, after three weeks, Larry came into the cave carrying a stale piece of bread, "You've been in here a month now. Aren't you hungry?" "I went two months without eating of my own choice. You really think I'll cave after a month?" Larry smiled at me, "I have to admit, I do admire your spirit. I think you've earned this much, at least." he ripped the bread in half and threw one of the halves into my cell at my feet, "I'll give you the other half next month." He then left the cave. I reached over, picked up the piece of bread he gave me, and took a small bite out of it, 'Tastes awful, but it's better than nothing. But I should ration it for the next month.' After taking just one bite, I put the bread down beside me and started practising my mana control, 'He said I can't use my mana, but what about the mana in the air?' Concentrating, I was able to see the faint gl

As I slowly started to come to, I opened my eyes and looked around the room. I noticed I was in what looked like a cave. After completely coming to, I sat up and had a proper look around. I was inside a cell built into the corner of a cave with guards standing just outside the door to the cell. Feeling groggy along with a headache, I took off my wig and mask and threw them on the ground, "What the hell happened? Where am I?" "You always ask a lot of questions, don't you?" I looked over to my left and saw the man in the crow mask standing outside the side of my cell, "Who are you? Are you the bastard that kidnapped my child?!" The man smiled as he took a few steps to the side, allowing me to see the rest of the cave. As I looked behind him, I saw a pedestal in the middle of the room with my egg on it, "My egg! What the hell do you want?!" "You never stop asking questions. That's something I really couldn't stand when we were together." "Just tell me who you are!" The man faced me

While we were still in Walter's office, I asked him, "Can we cast disguise spells on ourselves before we go to the masquerade?" "Spells like that will be broken the moment you walk into the castle. You'll have to wear a wig to hide your hair, but I'm not sure how we'll hide your eyes. Terry doesn't need to change his since magenta eyes are still relatively common among nobles, but pink eyes are rare enough that dragons will know any noble with them." "I can just change the colour of my eyes." "That won't work. Like I told you, spells like that will be broken when you walk into the castle." "Dad, I can change the colour of my eyes through my own will." Walter looked at me, confused, "What?" I leaned in towards Walter as I slowly changed my eye colour to grey, "I can change my eyes to resemble that of any natural dragon eye colour." "And this isn't a spell?" "No, it's one of a pink eye dragon's abilities, but it's apparently kept secret." "I can understand why. An ability like

While Terry and I were looking through documents in his office, I finished reading the one I had and threw it on the desk, "Nothing! I can't find a single thing that can help us!" "Sash, please, we'll find something. It'll just take time." "Terry, it's been nearly two months since our egg was taken from us. I want to get it back." "I do too, but we have time. The child won't hatch for nearly five years. So we have all that time to search." "From what I've seen, we're not even close. It's obvious after looking through all this these families didn't do it!" "Then we start again and look for something else to help us." "And how long will that take? I don't want to leave our child's life up to some ruthless bastards who stole it!" "I'll be there as fast as I can." After a while, Dan arrived at the estate, and Terry escorted him to our bedroom as he told him, "Like I told you, she's completely shut down and unresponsive." "If I'm being perfectly honest, I can't blame her. I wouldn't take it well if my children were kidnapped." When they entered the room, Dan walked over to me and started to check my state, "Sash, can you hear me?" I didn't respond or open my eyes.
