DAMON

"And she said it." My hands flew into mid-air with slight annoyance in my gesture. "She freaking said it."

"Damon." Disbelief filled Linda's tone. "You are twenty-five years old. A freaking twenty-five-year-old photography genius. A freaking handsome dude."

My head turned to face her and the expression she had confirmed the official title given to her by our colleagues. She was the drama queen of our company.

So, as I relaxed and decided to give in to the moment, I knew that her utterances were yet to come to an end.

Gripping the steering wheel a little hard, Linda continued, "I mean, you should have seen the look on my face the first time you stepped into our building. I was almost drooling. You looked like an angel in human clothing. So sweet, cute, and good-looking. And then I heard your voice. It... Oh my God."

I cleared my throat because her loud moan was causing our discussion to go a little off-track.

"Okay fine. What I am trying to ask is, how are you a virgin with this..." She took her eyes off the road briefly and quickly scanned my body before her attention went back to where it was needed. "... amount of handsomeness? Have you ever seen yourself in the mirror?"

 "Linda..."

"Don't girls swoon over you? Wait, are you for the other..."

"Linda!" I shut her up loudly. "Yes, I am a virgin. And there's nothing wrong with that. And, I don't play for the other team."

"It is just strange." I heard her desperation to utter more words.

But, a light sigh was all she gave and silence finally ruled the car. Not for long though.

"But why?" Linda persisted after an eternity of tranquility.

"I want to give myself to someone special." I saw her brow rise. "There is nothing weird about that, okay?"

She nodded with a grim look and I heaved a heavy sigh while trying not to roll my eyes.

Time seemed to be graciously on our side as we soon reached my house. Not a second wasted, I got off the car and raced toward my house.

My house is a small abode with a bedroom, a barely spacious bathroom, and a crappy living room. Most of my cooking is done in the backyard which is quite spacious compared to the entire house.

I hurriedly took out my keys and entered. I headed for my room and grabbed the blue file from my tiny table on which I worked on my photography projects while brooding about the sorry state of my life.

After making sure to take my wallet which was resting freely on my couch after I forgot it in the morning, I walked out of the house.

The wooden door locked once again, I approached a patient-looking Linda and I did not miss the bright smile on her face. As I entered, I had to ask, "What's with the smile?"

"I think I found my man for the night." Her head gestured toward some dude across the street. I didn't know the man at all. In fact, I have never seen him in the neighbourhood.

But then I couldn't act fatherly or brotherly and say, 'Hey he is bad news don't mix with him,' because I hardly know anyone in the neighbourhood apart from Grandma Nooni who died the previous week.

Bless her soul.

"Just be careful Lin," I finally said once I took note of the man's important features. I will certainly remember him next time when I see the flower tattoo that covered his entire back.

Linda gave a quick nod and the car's engine was brought to life again.

As soon as we hit the road, my imagination started to run wild. I began to picture how the interview would go.

I even played a scene where I would be grossly embarrassed for coming late.

Yes, sometimes, I deliberately hurt myself by thinking about terrible things.

Once I halted my thoughts, I checked the time. 6:45 pm.

I was at an advantage and I could make it provided...

"Aw shit! There's a freaking hold-up" Linda exclaimed and hurriedly stopped her car before it could kiss the rear of the vehicle in front of her.

My hopes were almost crashing as I looked around and saw the long line of cars waiting to leave the hold up which was likely to have no exact cause.

"I am so sorry Damon, this will delay you. But I promise you'll get to that place today. You must get that job," she said assuredly.

I gave her an appreciative nod and looked ahead, my lips rolling out deep exhales as I watched the muddled cars move slowly.

Of all days, I just had to be unfortunate at a moment when things could change for me.

But what can I do?

My gaze travelled to the digital clock on the dashboard and the way time continued to race told me that I needed to prepare myself for the incoming disappointment.

Since I have experienced the same thing numerous times in the past, it was not hard for me to do just that. Though I wished to push that moment to the end, I told my soul to kill the excitement and expect the least.

An hour later, we were in front of TIANOR, the huge signboard adjacent to the building insulting Linda's Micra.

"Go, go, go. Go win this, baby." Linda pushed me out with her words of encouragement. I thanked her loudly, pulled my file to my chest,t a deep breath, and raced into the building.

A few hurried steps after, I bumped into a suited lady who let out a peculiar shriek. It was really weird. It was like hearing baby dragons cry.

No, I don't know what they sound like, but let's just imagine they cry like a person in distress.

"Watch it." The woman glared at me with her tiny eyes.

I gulped hard and apologized.

When she kept her hands on her slim waist to communicate her impatience, I wondered if she was one of the models. I didn't want to tell her my reason for being there at first, but I quickly realized that I was not in a situation that allows me to be picky.

So, with haste, I said, "I am here for the interview."

She stared me down and turned in her heels before I could utter an additional word.

"Well, aren't you the earliest?"  she asked sarcastically. Her heels began to make clicking sounds and I wasted no time in following her.  "Hand me your university certificate." She extended her hand over her shoulder.

My hands trembling, I took the documents out.

But the papers in my hands didn't have purple or pale green colours with gold or silver stripes decorating their tips. I didn't see any form of calligraphic writing on them either.

My chest began to pound with fear.

I stopped in my tracks, stood upright, and stared palely at the lady's back.

"No, no, no, no," I murmured frantically, my brows twitching with further confusion.

"Mister, I am waiting." Another scowl was directed at me when the woman sharply turned and watched me drown in a pool of distress.

How would I even explain this?

How would I explain that I had the scribbled drawings of my niece instead of the documents that make up my entire CV?

"Mister..." She sounded like I was testing her patience. As though she had any.

"I..." I cleared my throat to force out the words. "I... Um... I happen not to have my documents at the moment."

My hand reached for the back of my head and I began to wish for the floor to swallow me because the look she instantly gave me was deadly enough.

"Look at me, Mister." I raised my head slowly to meet her eyes. "Do I look like I am trying to be funny? I might tell jokes from time to time, but right now, I am not freaking joking."

My hands which were feeling listless suddenly clasped in front of my chest as though I was about to pray. Then, I did something I swore to never do.

"Please, don't chase me out." I took a step closer. "At least give me a chance to get the interview. I swear I didn't mean to get the wrong file. I was rushing at that moment. Please give me a chance." I begged profusely as though my existence depended on it.

Well, it does. If I land this job, things will be set for me. I will finally have a good life.

I will say goodbye to my days of endlessly searching for a decent job.

She stared at me for a while like I was speaking gibberish before she finally talked.

"Mister, get out." Without mercy in her eyes, she stretched a finger toward the huge doors behind us.

I quickly fell to my knees and as I did that, my hands formed tight fists and they rested on my lap.

That moment annoyed me more as I felt a slight shiver in my system. I really hate the position I have found myself in.

But the more I thought about the failed days I spent trying to get a stable job opportunity, the more I was willing to endure that shameful moment.

"Please," the slight quiver in my voice told me that I was close to breaking down with tears, "I need this job. Just give me a chance. Just one chance."

If only she could understand the pain and desperation in my voice.

But it was clear that she didn't because she kept ordering me to leave.

"Mister, you can come back tomorrow. I will reserve a seat for you."

That is a lie. A big fat lie. There are no interviews set for the next day,’ I was tempted to say,  but I needed her help not her hatred.

"No, let me stay here. I will kneel here till I get the interview."

"I said..." Her rash words stayed incomplete as another lady walked towards her and whispered something into her right ear. It was then I noticed I had attracted an audience who were watching me beg for something I may never get.

I was waiting for the other lady to leave so I could plead some more but she didn’t leave.

Instead, she faced me and said, "The boss wants you upstairs."

DAMON The boss was really ugly. He had many bumps of pimples on his face that I just had to feel a shiver run down my spine. Okay... My stupid imagination was at work again. I wasn't even in the office yet. After about five elevator rides, we were yet to reach the boss's office. Damn! TIANOR is really huge. It's bigger than I thought it was and the environment was also amazing. Serene, colourful, and, beautiful... The company would be a good place to work. The elevator soon stopped and it vomited the woman and me. When she faced me, a grin was planted on her lips and I gave her a hesitant smile in return. But then, she also wore a flirting look... Oh, now I get it. I am a twenty-five-year-old handsome dude, so women can't help but admire me. While it is a good thing to be admired, the look in the woman's eyes was starting to make me feel extremely uncomfortable. As my sight darted toward the space ahead, the woman stretched her long, slender hand, asking for a handshake. "He

DAMON "B-but... You look so young," I uttered when I found my voice. A burst of short laughter escaped her. "I am going to excuse your narrow-minded view. Darling," her smile was wide, "I am just twenty-seven and I won't be getting old anytime soon." Her voice carried certain confidence that I could never attempt to rival. While I was jealous of her admirable high self-esteem, I gave her a look of doubt which she responded to with a quick nod of her head. I still had a little look of doubt on my face when she said, "Let's not waste time on age-telling, Damon. I have a proposition for you." The wrinkle on my forehead deepened. "How do you know my name?" I instantly realized she had said my name earlier. Tilting her head to the right, her bun fell into a ponytail. That simple move gave her face a slightly different feature. "I know a lot of things about you, Damon Jones. You live in Alaban, don't you?" "Stalker alert?" I found myself asking without putting much thought into my

From where I was, I watched her move her upper body energetically to the rest of the theme song and when the end came, I took over. "Spongebob SquareBecca!" With a wide smile on my face, I reached for her hair and ruffled it. Surprisingly she didn't yell like she usually did. Instead, she faced me and gave me an innocent-looking smile which strangely reminded me of the crazy encounter I had the previous day. "Why are you smiling?" I asked her when her smile turned into a toothy grin. "'Cause you're not mad at me anymore," she replied with that cute voice of hers. "I was and can never be mad at you, Becca." 'I don't know about your teenage days though,' I quickly thought. I was well aware of the fact that the teenage years can be a little... I don't know the word to use. DAMON With a bitter smile on my lips, I decided it would be better to park my car in the open parking lot. Parking in the basement car park would call undue attention to me and the employees I see every day would have more reason to taunt me as they have been doing for whatever reason known to them. Once the parking was taken care of, I got out of the car and mentally prepared myself for the long day ahead. I entered the administration building whose outside walls were painted pink and white and headed straight for Linda's office to get my costume and trays of sweets. Yes, that torturous activity is not over. As I ignored the snickering and intentional backbiting that trailed me as I walked, I wondered if my bear-dancing situation would come to an end soon. Mr. Hands did not indicate how long I would do the embarrassing activity for. At that point, I didn't mind the desk job which I always dreaded because of the people I worked with. Soon, my mind still raided with thoughts, I

DAMON My eyes blinked furiously and with difficulty, I adjusted my sight to accommodate the unusual brightness in the room. I managed to take a quick look around the huge, space that would be empty if I wasn't there, and I noticed a huge gap in the ceiling which gave sunlight a point of entry. That was where the light was from. The heavens must enjoy teasing me. Other than the light that was focused on me, the remnant of the room was dark. I could barely see what lurked in the far corners but I felt a lot of negative energy which came with the musky smell that I was certain I wouldn't be forgetting soon. Soon, I attempted to move my feet so that I could at least scurry for my freedom. Hitting the rusty iron door which was right in front of me didn't sound like a terrible idea. Or I could dump that crazy idea and save myself from getting into trouble by checking out the strange environment through the small bars the huge door had. But, my feet wouldn't budge. My nose scrunched in reaction to his disturbing perfume. After making a clicking noise with his mouth, he folded his arms, gazed right into my eyes, and asked, "How could you have never heard of The Pretties? We made quite an entry this year." "What do you guys do? Put on dresses and try out new lipsticks? Are you a fashion company of some sort?" My voice was so calm and I became worried for myself. Excusing the flamboyant appearance of the man in front of me, it was clear that they were one of the gangs that bothered the streets of the country. But, no, I have never heard about them. The name 'The Pretties' didn't sound familiar. But then, I don't exactly pay much attention to the affairs of the nation. I have enough problems to deal with. My ears caught the stifled chuckles from one of the men at the entrance. Mr. Pretty was

DAMON Miss Selena made clicking noises with her mouth as she tapped the wooden arm of the couch she was seated on. I narrowed my eyes as her response rang in my head a hundred times over. There was something about the word, 'father', that almost made me believe her but, I could not afford to fall into any trap. Especially if that trap is laced with lies. I won't let anyone use my late brother as a means to get me to do something terrible. "What do you mean by my brother was killed because of my father? How do expect me to believe anything you are saying? What?" My frown deepened. "My brother was killed? Please... it was clearly an accident." "The Pretties masterminded his accident. They made sure it was impactful enough to kill him. So yes, they killed him." Selena exhaled hard as I glared at her. As she scrunched her lips while her mind seemed to calculate things, I went to take a seat opposite her. "Prove it. I won't believe you until you do so," I dared her. "Gladly." Her li

DAMON “Damon, it’s almost time,” my mother said, stopping me from craning my neck once again to check if Selena was already at the airport. I checked either way. She wasn’t around. I have been searching for her in the many crowds for hours and no matter how hard I looked, she wasn't there. “Damon…” My mother called again and I sighed. Ever since that intense night in my house, I haven’t heard from Selena. No texts and no calls. All the messages I sent to her to inform her about the flight were read and successfully ignored. Honestly, I don’t know what to feel. When I told her about my plans to leave the country, I knew that she could choose to say farewell to me and the short time we had together, but this is not how I imagined our goodbye. I wanted our farewell to be meaningful. I wished to remind her once again that despite everything that happened, I was grateful for the time we spent together, and that I would never forget her. I wanted to see her face one last time. But

As I searched his eyes for a hint that would give his deceit away, Damon said, “You are the one that betrayed me, Selena.“Are you talking about the diamonds?”“You knew the truth about the diamonds. So much so that I abandoned my work and hurried to her house while praying fervently that Malik or Selena’s father had not gotten a hold of her. “Oh, Damon…” My mother’s voice greeted me as she calmly walked out of the kitchen. Heaving a sigh of relief, a small frown etched on my forehead, I rushed to her and engulfed the entirety of her body in my embrace. I used the assurance of her presence to soothe the terror that was about to grow inside me. Patting my back almost reluctantly or maybe confusedly, my mother asked, “Is something wrong?” Shaking my head, I answered, “No. I am just glad you are here.

There were no guards in the room, the couches were missing and the artworks that usually brightened the room were nowhere to be seen.Looking toward the stairs, my ears picked up some faint voices and once I traced them, my feet led me to a part of the mansion I have never been to before. Just on that ground floor, past the naked living room, there were two doors tucked away from prying eyes. Noting how dimly lit the space was, it made sense that I never noticed that area.“What the hell do you think you are doing, Selena?” I recognized the voice of Selena’s father. Quickly, my feet led me to the door on my left.

And, the booze stench coming from the innards of his mouth caused me to swing my head to the side but that caused my eyes to link with Selena’s.
