Everyone present froze. They were all surprised to see that Rendall was able to transform into his wolf even when it was not the full moon.
Rendall ran to Helia and they both ran out of the Alpha's court. Nobody tried to stop them. Not even Alpha Janus. They just stood, transfixed and unable to decipher what had just taken place. Helia and Rendall both ran till they got to the forest. The Sentinels at the border were not able to stop them.
When they got to the forest, Rendall stopped but Helia kept on running. He ran after her, hoping she would stop but she did not. She ignored Rendall and ran faster until she got to a strange-looking tree that differed from other trees in the forest. Rendall stopped to watch her.
Under the tree were a lidded container and a bag. She brought out a dress for herself, glanced at Rendall, and gave him a small twisted smile. She brought out a dress for him too, threw it at him and it fell on his shoulders. He frowned but she ignored him, reached out for the lidded container, and went behind a tree. He snatched the dress from his shoulders and begrudgingly went behind another tree to shift and change his clothes.
In no time, he was done. He left the tree to see that Helia was done too and was waiting for him. His mouth hung agape the moment he saw her.
Her dress was a simple, white A-line gown with little shiny stones designing its waistline but she looked like a goddess in it. Her bouncy, lustrous, long blonde hair which fell on her waist and shone under the sun made her look more angelic.
His heart raced faster at the sight of her but she just stood there, waiting for him innocently like she had done nothing. He did not have the habit of ogling women but he could not stop himself from ogling Helia.
Helia began to laugh and he furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. His face turned red in embarrassment when he realized it was because of the strapless, blue gown he was wearing.
Her laughter grew louder and he glared at her. Here he was, thinking about how she looked like a goddess but she did nothing but laugh at him.
He frowned and sat under a tree. Helia walked to him, chuckling and when she got to where he sat, she crouched in front of him. Rendall scowled and turned his face away from her. He was annoyed.
She smiled and touched his face with her hands and he froze. There were sparks and she retrieved her hands almost immediately. She had probably felt the sparks too. He turned to her and his eyes met hers which made his heart skip a beat.
Those beautiful amber eyes were on his again. It was like staring at how gold glittered just that the glitter of her eyes unlike that of gold struck his heart and stirred up something that had always been at rest. It stirred up his wolf too and as his eyes wandered from her eyes to her pink, plump lips, the urge to pull her into his arms and grab those lips of hers with his mouth increased. The fact that he had not done that yet proved that his self-control was top-notch.
"I really love your gown, princess," she said, grinning and that was enough for him to break free from the trance her beauty had held him in. He was annoyed and once again, he turned his face away. She giggled and stretched her hands to touch his face but she took her hands back without touching his face. Rendall looked at her. She must have truly felt the spark the first time. Rendall scowled and turned away from her.
Still giggling, she went to the tree she had kept the bag. Rendall turned to watch her and she brought out a pair of khaki trousers and a brown shirt from the bag.
"These belongs to my dad," she said, holding the clothes toward him. "He is more muscular so it won't fit perfectly but it should be okay on you."
"You had those in your bag so why did you give me a gown?"
"Because it's funny," she giggled and Rendall frowned at her. "Don't you want it?"
Rendall stood up, stomped over to her, and snatched the clothes from her.
"That was rude," Helia whined but he ignored her and went behind a tree. When he came out, Helia was sitting down under the tree she had kept her bag. His eyes fell on the container in her hands and he remembered how she had taken it with her when she went behind the tree. The sun was still up yet she was able to shift to her human form. Apparently, Nyx's curse had no effect on her. He wondered if the content of the container had made her shift.
"What did you take? It makes you shift whenever you like regardless of Nyx's curse."
"Yes, it does, but for only three hours. It's an elixir. I made it. The herbs you had seen me picking the other day are some of its ingredients. I won't tell you the full recipe."
"Elixir? Like a magic portion?"
"I'm a werelioness, not a witch so I won't call it a magic potion."
"How did you know how to make it? Who taught you? Is it something that all werelions know how to make?"
Helia sighed and sat under the tree.
"I'm the only one who knows how to make it. Nobody taught me how to. The ability just came natural. It's strange though. One day, I taught my father how to make it but when he did his, it did not work. Same as my mom. Apparently, I am the only one that can make the elixir and I am the only one it works on."
She stopped talking and looked at Rendall.
"What you did is more marveling. You're immune to Nyx's curse?"
Rendall walked over to her and sat beside her but he regretted taking that action immediately because his wolf was becoming restless.
"Mark her!" Conri screamed but he ignored him. He was trying hard to control himself.
"I have always been immune to the curse. But, I do not know why?"
"That's also strange," she said softly and Rendall gave her a small smile.
"Well, it is as strange as a werelion making magic portions," Rendall said and Helia chuckled.
He looked at her as she laughed. She was so beautiful. The first time he had seen her hair, her hair was jet black and her eyes, green. Now, she was a blonde, with amber eyes.
Weird, right?
Well, he liked weird. He was also weird. He was enjoying the company of a werelioness despite how werelions were sworn enemies of his people.
He shuddered when he realized he was still ogling her. He did not blame himself. She was the most beautiful creature he had ever seen.
"Make her yours," his wolf growled but he restrained himself from doing that. Controlling his wolf was hard but he had to.
She looked at him and she stopped laughing.
Nalea, her lioness roared.
"Control yourself Nalea," she chastened it.
Rendall looked away. If he looked at her face more than he already did, he might end up marking her that very moment.
"We share the same birthday," he said trying to start a conversation. As he read her facial expression, he saw that it had worked. She was interested in what he had said.
"We do?"
Rendall nodded.
"Do you think that's the reason behind our difference from the rest? The day of our birth was the day the greatest curse in the wereworld hit our land." Helia was lost in thoughts.
"Perhaps."
Silence prevailed.
Rendall looked at Helia and he saw how much she was immersed in thoughts.
"Maybe our destiny is intertwined with this curse saga."
"Maybe."
Silence again.
"I know who we can meet for answers," Helia said enthusiastically, breaking the lingering silence.
"You do?" Her words had gained Rendall's interest. If she knew someone who could provide answers to at least half of their questions. Then, that was great news.
Rendall's hopeful look suddenly turned to a worried look.
"Is this person you speak of a werelion?"
"What if he is?"
"I'm not going to Khron to see a werelion," Rendall said with an air of finality.
"Calm down," Helia chuckled. "He is from Khron but he is not at Khron."
"Is he at Wulfe? A werelion lives at Wulfe?"
"No, he lives in this forest. He can live among the werewolves though. That is if he chooses to."
"Really! He has your magic potion?"
"Nope but unlike other werelions, he remains in his human form both day and night and again, it's an elixir, not a magic potion."
"So, I'm not the only one immune to Nyx's curse."
Helia thought for a while before speaking.
"I don't think that's the reason because I don't think he can shift. Nobody has seen him shift. Rumor has it that he had lost his lion a long time ago in an accident."
Rendall chuckled. "Is that even possible?"
"Probably. We're still young and inexperienced but this man has lived for centuries."
"What's his name?"
"Alecto."
Helia smiled as she said his name and Rendall felt his heart squeeze in pain. Was he... Jealous?
Alecto was an old seer that Helia had grown fond of since childhood. She loved following her father whenever he visited Alecto.
"Alecto has answers to every question. He'd most certainly have answers to the one we'll ask him."
Silence.
"Why does he stay alone in this forest?"
"Alecto longs for solitude. Khron is very much like a forest anyways."
Rendall was not surprised. They lived most of their life awake in their Lion form.
"Do you want to see it?" Helia asked teasingly with a smirk. She had a playful look on her face that told Rendall that he had no guts to visit Khron.
Rendall watched her as she dared him. Her mouth was twisted to a mischievous smile which he found cute. He wanted that mouth that teased him to be in his mouth badly. His wolf kept on pushing him to do what he wanted and it drove him crazy.
He drew closer to her. He expected her to move away and he was surprised when he she moved closer to him too. He looked at her face. She did the same and their eyes met.
"No!" Helia thundered startling Rendall.
"What's wrong?" Rendall had not expected the sudden outburst. He wondered if she had just realized he was her mate.
Rendall tried to reach out to her but she moved away before he could do so.
"Don't touch me," she warned sternly. "Don't dare come near."
Rendall's heart squeezed in pain. Was she about to reject him?
"Take a chill pill. Would you? Why the outburst?" Luna's eyebrow furrowed in confusion. What was going on in her head? "I'm sorry." Her voice softened. "Let's forget about the outburst. I don't know what came over me." "Oh! Okay." Rendall wondered what was on her mind as he studied her. Was she thinking of rejecting him? He sighed. If that was what was on her mind, then it was good, right? The feeling was mutual, wasn't it? He wondered if she even knew he was her mate. Helia had always seen herself as someone who was always in control but this werewolf was making her lose control easily and she hated it. She knew that she needed to do the needful fast and make sure she does not cross paths with the wolf again. "We should go to Alecto now." Helia feigned a smile and Rendall nodded in agreement to what she had said. Helia led the way and Rendall walked behind her. It had been hours after sunset, yet, they had not gotten to Alecto's house. Helia's hair was jet black already and h
Rendall heaved a sigh of satisfaction as he walked with two dead antelopes on his shoulders. He could have hunted for more but Alecto had infuriated him by scolding him for not leaving earlier. Hello seethed in anger as he remembered how Alecto had driven him out of Helia's room and out of the house. Well, two antelopes were more than enough for the old man, he thought to himself and smiled as he saw Alecto's house from where he stood. Rendall dropped the games in front of the house when he got there. The door was opened and he could see Alecto and Helia drinking tea and discussing heartily. "I'm back," he announced as he walked into the house but neither Alecto nor Helia spared him a glance. "So my father loved chicken as much as I do when he was younger?" Helia asked Alecto, ignoring Rendall. "Yes and then he was nicknamed ‘the chicken Alpha’. Oh, my days! Then, at night, all the werelions will gather and everyone will display how fiercely they shifted. Of course, your father w
Rendall stared blankly at the wooden door. He had not been eavesdropping. He just wanted to show Helia the chicken he had caught for her."I did not want her as my mate too. This is good. The feeling is mutual," he reassured himself and feigned a smile.********************"Checkmate," Alecto announced and Helia cheered. Rendall stared in disbelief at the chess board on the table. Alecto's black queen had checked his white king. This was like the hundredth time they had played the game but, at the end of each game, Alecto turned out to be the winner."Again," Rendall said wryly. For the past hours, that word had been his catchphrase while the word ‘checkmate’ had been Alecto's."I am tired, young wolf," Alecto whined. "Just face it. Even though you would be ruling a kingdom soon, you suck at the game of Kings.""I won't give up easily. We will play the game again.""Young wolf," Alecto called out with a smirk, "you would be leaving for the human world very soon and when you get there
Rendall and Helia stood by the tarred road and watched as cars drove by. They were fascinated by what they saw. Large metals with wheels and windows that had people in them drove fast passed them. Some were bigger. Some were smaller. Some were black. Some were red. They came in different colors, shapes, and sizes. One of the colored metals with wheels stopped before them and they watched in awe as its front door window winded down. A man's head came into view. He was a red-head with a freckled face."Where are you love birds heading to?" He asked. Rendall and Helia exchanged glances. They were both confused. "No," Rendall began. He was unsure of what to tell the man. "We aren't birds. I'm a wolf and she's a lioness."Rendall's words amused the man and Helia elbowed Rendall and crooked an eyebrow at him. She turned to the man and flashed a smile at him. "We are not lovebirds. We just want to get to Wilkinson PLC. Do you know where it is?""Of course I do," the red-headed driver replie
"Helia." Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Who was this man? And, how did he know her name? She began to study his features. His hair was dark and sleek, his thick straight eyebrows matched the confidence he radiated, and his facial features were chiseled. This man was almost as handsome as Rendall. He emitted a powerful aura too— one that could not be likened to that of a human. As she took another look at the man's face, she realized how much he looked familiar. She could not remember where but she knew she had seen him before. Her eyes widened in surprise as it finally dawned on her. This man had once visited her father. The man standing behind Rendall's wolf, Conri was... "Brient?" "Helia," he called out as if he was warning Helia. That was when Helia noticed that he was pointing something toward her. It was a tranquilizer gun and as he shot a dart, Helia's eyes widened in terror as she saw the dart approaching her. She watched as the dart moved passed her and turned to se
"W—well, W— wulfe is the name of a country club in Canada. The country club is owned by Rent dall's father and its members are filthy rich because the membership of Wulfe costs more than a hundred thousand dollars. Rendall spent all his life in the country club community and red diamonds are nothing to them so Rendall wore his ring freely," Brient said, laughing it off, and then he turned to Rendall. "Wulfe is completely different from this place. At Wulfe, red diamond is valuable but it is far more valuable here since it is rarely seen around. Since your father owned Wulfe and was rich enough, you were heavily guarded at Wulfe and could thus, wear your ring or whatever you wanted to wear whenever you liked. This place is not as safe as Wulfe. People here might seem weaker but they are more cunning and dangerous." Brient turned to Selene and feigned a smile. "Rendall is a little bit spoiled. He thinks he can behave as freely as he usually does at Wulfe. Selene nodded and smiled at bo
"You don't like her, do you?" Helia looked away from Rendall and Danica who were acting all lovey-dovey to Selene, who had just joined her.Danica was the illegitimate daughter of the Gamma of Wulfe. She was born a few months before the birth of Rendall. Her mother was not the Gamma's mate but the Gamma treated her equally as he treated the children of his mate. He took her with him to the Alpha court whenever she wanted and there, she met Rendall and they both became friends. They were more like childhood sweethearts and as Helia who was with the both of them saw that she was nothing but a third wheel who did nothing but watched as old friends bonded, she excused herself and went to the toilet. If she had spent any more time with them, she would have most probably shifted to Nalea as she could feel herself losing control with every passing moment. When she came back from the toilet, instead of joining them, she stood from afar and watched them, seething with anger.Helia frowned as s
"Rendall." Rendall jolted back to reality, away from the trance he was held in as he heard a familiar voice call his name. He looked away from Helia's face to the elevator door. The elevator had stopped moving, it door was opened and he saw Danica and Brienne standing side by side. "Rendall," Danica called out in a brittle voice. She reached out to his arm and dragged him out of the elevator, pulling him close to herself. "I missed you." "He was only gone for a few minutes," Helia muttered loud enough for all four of them to hear, rolling her eyes. "Excuse me!" Danica eyed her. "What did you say?" "Let's leave fast so we won't miss taking the subway." Brient decided to intervene as he saw how tense the atmosphere was becoming. "We can take a cab." Danica shot Brient a glare and then she moved her glare to Helia. "I would love to know what her problem is." "You can take a cab. You're going a separate way after all. Rendall, Helia, and I would take the subway since Rendall and H
Helia watched in terror as the silver bullets moved toward Rendall. She closed her eyes and without thinking about it, she muttered words. Words which she had seen somewhere but could not place where.Energy radiated from her and immediately, she heard the bullet strike someone. She felt her heart freeze, hoping it was not what she thought. Hoping that whatever she had done had worked.Helia's eyes snapped open and when they did, they moved to Rendall, then to Alpha Janus and they dilated. The son stared at the father and the father stared back. One of them was on their knees, gasping for his last breath."F— father?" Rendall's voice quivered.Alpha Janus' head was bowed in shame."You tried to kill me?" Shock was written all over Rendall's face. He knew that his father was evil and despite the threats, he never really thought that his father could try to kill him."Save me.""I can't. If I could, I still wouldn't. You deserve what has befallen you," Rendall spat disdainfully.Helia s
"Rendall!" Helia called out as soon as she got into Rendall's room. Rendall was seated on his bed with worry etched on his face."Helia?"Rendall got up from his bed. He began to look around and Helia sighed."You can't see me, remember?" "Oh! You're right. You're under an invisibility spell. You were still in my father's room after I had left, right?""Yes.""And you heard Mr. Wilkinson and my father talk about me, right?""Yes.""What did they say?"Rendall's question was followed by a long silence."Your father. He is so—""Evil?""Evil is too weak to describe what he is. No offense, but I'd rather not have a father than have a father like yours.""I know right? So, what did he say?" Rendall asked and he raised an eyebrow as he heard her sigh again."We have to be cautious.""What did my father say?""That he'd kill you if he finds out that you're trying to trick him," Helia said and Rendall chuckled sarcastically."Well, I'm not surprised. He'd do anything for power. Do you hear
"Everything that happened, happened according to how it was fated to. All this happened for one result. The werewolves are getting punished for taking the land of the witches. The werelions are punished for not helping their neighbors." "How do we get out of her punishment?" Helia asked "That's for you both to figure out. You both have the knowledge you need to break the curse of Khron and Wulfe. You have to. It is your destiny to do so." "Since we are destined to save Wulfe and Khron, we'll do so, right?" Rendall asked and Alecto smiled. "We have destinies. We can also choose whether or not we want our destinies. You can choose to save the werewolves and werelions. You can also choose not to save the werewolves and the werelions," Alecto answered with a casual shrug and Helia and Alecto glanced at each other. "We have to take down both my father and Mr. Wilkinson," Rendall said and Helia scoffed. "Like you would really take down your father. You would surely betray us," Helia s
"Do you really have to go? Again?" Damien looked downcasted. "Please, don't leave. Stay a little longer." Helia and Rendall exchanged glances. They both looked sad too. "We have to go. We have a curse to break," Rendall explained and Damien looked up at him with his eyes glossed with tears. Rendall's heart melted at the sight and he took Damien into his arms and hugged him. "Aunt." Damien turned to Helia with his body still glued to that of Rendall. "Please hug me too." Helia opened her arms and Damien gestured for her to come closer instead. "But—" Damien's face fell, interrupting Helia's protest. She waved her hands in surrender and joined them. Rendall froze as her skin touched his. His heart began to flutter and so did Helia's. At that moment, they both realized that the rejection did not work. Damien smiled to himself when he saw them look at each other. He disengaged from the hug and as he did, Rendall and Helia were in each other's arms without Damien acting as a middl
Mr. Wilkinson smirked at Alpha Janus, brought another pair of eye contacts, and gave it to him."What do you think?" Mr. Wilkinson asked when Alpha Janus wore it and Alpha Janus looked at him."How do you use this? Can you hypnotize simply by looking a person in the eye or do you have to do something else?"Mr. Wilkinson raised an eyebrow as soon as he heard Alpha Janus' question and then he grinned. "Why are you trying to move faster than your shadow?"Alpha Janus was thrown off guard by Mr. Wilkinson's question before he quickly put himself together. "I'm just very curious, you know. I'd really love to know.""You seem—" Mr. Wilkinson's voice trailed off and Alpha Janus frowned.‘Just tell me how to freaking use the Gizmo, stupid human,’ Alpha Janus cursed in his mind."Your thoughts matter too. Just think about it while you lock eyes with whoever you want to hypnotize and boom, he or she would be.""We want to hypnotize every were-creature, remember? Would we begin to look everyone
"Werewolves and witches have a history?" Rendall was shocked."A painful one at that. Haven't you heard any folklore concerning it? Or at least a myth? You werewolves are good at telling fake stories anyways just for storytelling's sake."Rendall scoffed and looked back at the book. "Let's check out what is written in it. Do you think it's because of the history that Nyx cursed Wulfe too?""My mother did a great job by cursing the werewolves. I would have done the same," Helia said."Let's just check the book," Rendall said. He was tired of hearing Helia's complaints. She rolled her eyes, removed the book away from his face, and opened it."What's written in it?" Rendall joined her in checking the book and they both turned white as they flapped through the pages. The book was telling a story. It was a story of how the werewolves had forcefully taken the land of witches away from them.A long time ago, werewolves had no particular land. They formed packs that were ruled by an Alpha. A
"Please, don't send us away," Helia pleaded and Damien's grandfather scowled at her."Get out," he growled. "Daughter of a witch. Heaven knows if she's a witch like her mother. These things must exist in the genes. Your mother killed my only son and my daughter-in-law. I have almost nothing left. You probably want to take all I have away from me.""But—""If you don't leave now, I'd make sure I kill you with my own hands," Damien's grandfather threatened. "It will be fair enough anyways. Nyx kic cflled my son and I killed her daughter.""Sir, we—" "You're pushing me," he growled, interrupting Helia again."We're here because we need to break Nyx's curse," Rendall said quickly before he'd get interrupted by the old man."She cursed you?" "Yes, that wicked witch cursed the both of us and our families too," Rendall answered and Helia glared at him for calling her mother wicked."She did?" The old man's hard expression was beginning to melt."And a demon called Janus too. He is also cal
Helia closed her eyes. Her greatest nemesis had caught up with her without her seeing any way of getting out of it. So, Helia stood, expecting an impact.Suddenly, she heard the sound of a bullet striking flesh. Helia froze. She wondered where the bullet had struck. She wondered if she would die anytime soon. Helia placed her middle finger under her nose to know if she was still breathing. She was. She placed her hands on her chest. Her heartbeat was normal."Does death come this slowly?" Helia asked herself and immediately she felt something lift her. She snapped her eyes open and as she did, she screamed.Peering down at her was a blue-eyed white beast. She batted her lashes as it dawned on her that it was Rendall in his wolf form. She was in the arms of Conri, Rendall's wolf."From frying pan to fire," Helia muttered to herself. She looked away from his face to their surroundings and gasped. Lying on the floor were Alpha Janus and his warriors. They looked lifeless and Helia wond
"You're joking, right?" Rendall frowned as he heard Alecto's words."Joking? Should your father killing Alpha Leander surprise you? You of all people know the kind of person your father is.""But he promised me that he would not kill Leander and Ariela told me she did. Why would Ariela tell me she killed Alpha Leander when she did not.""He he. All I know is that your father has a hand in Helia's father's death.""How do you know the things you know? Who are you?""He he! You'd be the first were-creature to ask who I am. The rest assume they know but I can assure you that I'm not what they think I am.""Then, who are you?""You would know how with time," Alecto smirked. "All you have to know now is to go to the human world to Nyx's house.""Nyx's house? But we—""Helia is on her way there," Alecto chipped in and Rendall did not bother to argue again."Did my father really kill hers?" Rendall looked down at his feet and Alecto heaved a sigh."I warned you not to ask me that it'll hurt.
