Chapter FOUR — The Birth of Monica Jones
I stood in front of the mirror, the image of a bride adorned in white gazing back at me. The ivory silk cascaded around my form, alongside the lace detailing that accentuated the curves of my body. I couldn't deny the sheer beauty of the wedding dress, which hugged me snugly. It was a stark contrast to the dress I had worn on my ill-fated wedding day with that bastard Cole—a day that now felt like a distant, painful memory.Nervous energy coiled in me, with unease knotting my stomach as doubt crept into my mind. Was I really doing the right thing? Marrying a man I barely knew, all in the name of revenge? Could I really trust Gavin's words, a man whose real intentions were still a mystery to me?A heavy sigh escaped my lips as I examined my reflection, the uncertainty in my eyes staring back at me. The dress may have been exquisite, but the seriousness of my decision suddenly felt like a heavy burden on my shoulders. The thought of becoming a contract wife to a stranger, even for revenge, sent a shiver down my spine. But the burning desire to make Cole and Whitney pay—to show them that they couldn't betray me and get away with it—overpowered my hesitation. I chuckled wryly to myself, the irony not lost on me. How did I become lucky enough to snag a billionaire like Gavin and unintentionally convince him to play a part in my vendetta by proposing the idea of a contractual marriage? Pity, perhaps, like he mentioned, mingled with whatever else he had in mind, must have been what made him offer such an opportunity. Whatever the case, here I stood in a wedding dress for a second time, just because I wanted to make some bastards pay. My thoughts spiraled, a feeling of uncertainty and determination battling in me. With a deep breath, I tried to anchor myself in the reality of my situation. This was no fairy tale wedding; this was a calculated move, a gamble I had chosen to take in my quest for payback.I reminded myself of the cold truth that I couldn't let nerves unravel me now. This marriage was a means to an end, a step towards reclaiming my pride and avenging the betrayal that had shattered my world. Gavin may have been a stranger, but his status as a billionaire granted me a power I had longed for—a power that would allow me to strike back at those who had wronged me."Monique Jones," I whispered to my reflection, the name foreign on my tongue. "Wife to billionaire heir, Gavin Jones."The weight of my new last name settled on my shoulders, and with a steely resolve, I straightened my posture, allowing my nervousness to slowly disappear. I couldn't afford to falter now, not when my life was about to take a turn for the better. The moment had arrived. The soft strains of the wedding music filled the air, a cue signaling my entrance into the next chapter of my life. With a final steady breath, I stepped out of the dressing room, the click of my heels echoing in the quiet hallway. I moved confidently as I made my way down the aisle. The familiar tune guided my steps, and as I walked, my gaze fixed ahead, seeking out the one person who had offered to save me. Gavin stood at the altar, his gaze fixed on me with a small, reassuring smile gracing his lips. The warmth in his eyes mirrored the sense of hope I suddenly felt in my chest while looking, like a silent affirmation that I wasn't alone anymore. I returned his smile, a fleeting moment between us amid the many unfamiliar faces that sat in the hall as our guests.I focused on him and tried to block out the curious glances of the guests, strangers whose eyes I avoided meeting. This wasn't a celebration of love; it was a charade, and I had to put up a good performance if I didn't want to be judged on my first day as Gavin's wife. As I finally reached the altar, Gavin's smile widened, and the ceremony commenced. The priest's voice broke through my thoughts as he said a few things before urging us to exchange our vows. I turned towards Gavin, his gaze unwavering as he took my hands in his. The peak of this moment settled on me, and I steadied my breathing so that I wouldn't end up stuttering when it was my turn."Monique Anderson," Gavin began his voice with a steady reassurance that grounded me in this surreal reality. "I stand before you, committed to this union out of nothing but love and mutual understanding. I promise to honor our love, to support you in everything that you do, and to stand by your side as we go through life together for the rest of our lives." My turn came, and I met his gaze, my voice steady as I recited the words that never failed to give me goosebumps. "Gavin Jones, I too enter into this marriage determined to love and support you. I promise to play my part as your wife, to honor our love for each other, and to support you through thick and thin."With the vows spoken, our eyes lingered on each other, a silent pact forged in the exchange of false promises. The priest's gentle voice pierced through the hushed murmurs; his words were a prelude to the moment I already knew was coming. "You may now kiss the bride," he intoned, his eyes flickering between Gavin and me as we stood before the altar. Without hesitation, Gavin's hand reached for mine, his touch warm against my skin as he drew me closer. The soft press of his lips against mine was a tender act—a gesture that subtly sent tingles down my spine, and I met his kiss with a smile. As we pulled away, the guests erupted into applause, a sound of approval that surrounded us. The wedding reception had started with laughter and music—the sound of love songs that were being played as Gavin and I found ourselves on the dance floor. This was the start of my new life as Monica jones, wife to a powerful billionaire and the beginning of my revenge against my ex husband and ex best friend.MONIQUEAll through the ride to Gavin's place, he and I said no words to one another.I looked out through the window watching the pedestrians on the street walking in the cold night."We are here," I heard Gavin say.I stepped out of the limousine and was met with a big fancy white mansion. There were six guards and six maids all dressed in a corporate outfit waiting at the entrance.Gavin came and stood beside me. He gave me his hand to take and I linked my arms with his."Welcome home wifey," he uttered beside me."Home," I uttered, the word sounded foreign to me. I used to love that word, back when I was in love and happy with Cole but then he shattered my heart and threw me out like nothing. Thinking about it only brought back the pain I had managed to suppress."Let's go." He said.We both walked past the maids and guards and into the white mansion. My eyes lit up in amusement from the interiors of the mansion. It is the most beautiful house I've ever seen. A gold chandelier
Monique Gavin and I were seated in the backseat of the car, and I lazily stared out the window. Earlier this morning, he had suddenly asked me to get dressed in formal attire, mentioning that he had somewhere to take me, but when I asked him where it was, he refused to say anything. According to him, this was going to be his wedding gift to me and a way for him to show how committed he was to proving that he meant it when he said he'd help me get revenge. I was genuinely taken aback when he said that earlier, but instead of dwelling on it, I reminded myself not to be fooled or get carried away. As the driver kept driving without stopping, I became even more restless and impatient. I threw a glance at Gavin, before questioning how long this was going to take. "I know you said it's a surprise, or whatever, but can't you please just tell me where we're headed now? I can't stand not knowing anymore." Gavin chuckled softly, his amusement evident in his eyes. "Ah, Monique, I didn't p
THIRD PERSON POV"Do you have an idea why Mr. Jones called for this urgent meeting?" The shareholders and investors of Cole's company whispered amongst themselves as they waited for Gavin to show up. Last night, Gavin had called for a shareholder meeting wanting to tell them something important.Cole on the other hand was pressed. He had no idea as to why Gavin, the biggest shareholder at his company would request they all assembled. Cole constantly kept looking in the direction of the door while expecting Gavin because he felt nervous in the pit of his stomach. Gavin wasn't one to just call for a meeting and for him to do so, it was serious. The door opened suddenly and Gavin walked in with his assistant behind him."Hello, gentlemen. I'm sorry for keeping you all waiting," Gavin said the minute he stood before the shareholders and investors who were waiting for him.He looked around the room and once his eyes set on Cole he smiled. He had called this meeting because he had somethi
Monique's pov "Did you see the look on that idiot's face?" I laughed as Gavin and I walked out of the company and back to the car. "He looked absolutely mortified." The look on his face earlier had made me so happy because I could tell that Cole was both horrified and pissed off. I'm pretty sure the last thing he was expecting was for me to show up at his workplace and suddenly be announced as his boss, and the fact that Gavin had given me such a perfect wedding gift made my heart leap for joy. "Someone seems ecstatic," Gavin said, opening my side of the door for me. I looked up at his towering figure, and with a smile on my face, I responded. "And it's all thanks to you," I winked before entering the car. For some reason, Gavin seemed to have frozen up, because instead of turning around and getting inside the car, he simply stood frozen by my side of the door. "Aren't you getting in?" I asked with a confused look on my face. Instead of responding directly to me, Gavin wou
MONIQUEAfter he dropped me off, he drove off without saying anything and I’ve been staring at my wristwatch every hour to know what the time was.I hated that I was bothered but I couldn’t help it. As much as I was angry at him, I also had my part to play because I recall clearly what our agreement was but I just didn’t think it was going to be this way. The day soon began to lose its brightness signaling that nighttime was coming and I saw no headlights of Gavin. I wanted to pick up my phone and call him but my pride wouldn’t allow me to. Eight o’clock, nine o’clock, ten o’clock and I gave it up and called him. I dialed his number, it rang but no response. I dialed his number again for the second time and the same response. I gave up and decided to sleep and wasn’t responsible for him but I couldn’t. I tossed and turned on the bed, pleading for my body to listen to me and sleep but it didn’t happen.“Sleep, Monique! Sleep for fuck sake! He’s a grown-ass man and he will be fine so
Monique I was restless. I tried everything I could to stop thinking about the conversation that Gavin and I had earlier today, but no matter how many times I tried, I couldn't help it. To make things worse, I couldn't resume work just yet since it would be strange for me to start working immediately after my wedding to Gavin, so what that meant was that I was stuck in the house for the time being, and so was Gavin. I haven't left my room since our conversation, mostly because I didn't want to run into him and also because I didn't want to end up giving in to him. I already tried considering the idea of going on a honeymoon with him, but no matter how many times I thought it over, it was still a bad idea. Feeling frustrated, I let out a tired sigh, wondering how long I would have to stay cooped up in here. My room was already starting to feel a little bit suffocating. I honestly wanted to take a walk around the house and see for myself how big the place was since I haven't don
MONIQUE"Can we meet up and talk?" I read the message that came in some seconds ago. I furrowed my brows as I thought about who it could be as the message came from an unknown number."Who is this?" I sent it back, wanting to know since I couldn't guess. "It's Cole. Can we see and talk?"After reading the text, I was surprised that he'd sent me a text. Why does he want to see me? It didn't make sense to me why he'd want to talk to me.We had no business with each other and the last time we spoke, he threw me out of his house calling me a useless girl so what does he want to say to a useless girl?I ignored his text but my phone beeped again and again signaling I received numerous texts."Please don't ignore.""I know that you do not want to see me but please don't ignore me.""I will wait for you at the mountain restaurant 9:30pm.""I hope that you will come."I read his text and shook my head in disbelief. To think he thought I’d come if he sent me a bunch of text messages. Just as
Monique's Pov I could already tell that the voice that asked where I was coming from belonged to Gavin, but what I couldn't understand was why he thought he had any right to ask me such a question."I'm sorry, but what right do you have to ask me where I'm coming from? I mean, I remember asking you the same thing earlier, and you definitely didn't seem enthusiastic to respond to me, so why should I ?" I retorted, turning to look at him with a disapproving look on my face. He was obviously not having my response, and I watched him groan in frustration without caring in the least bit about how he felt. "Listen, Monique, I really don't understand what your problem with me is, but this nasty attitude of yours needs to stop! I'm sick and tired of dealing with this disrespect, and if you have something you perhaps want to say to me, go ahead and say it instead of behaving like a child," he said, and I scoffed in disbelief. Men and their audacity. I just finished dealing with one idiot
Third-person Pov “Con artist Jennifer Cabello has finally been caught after years of escaping the authorities. She has a record of drugging, manipulating, and stealing from men, as well as marrying them, and faking abuse in order to get divorce settlements. She was also discovered to be the murderer of her foster father, Robin Owen, as well as being involved in a drug-related business,” the newscaster went on, and Monique watched with a satisfied smile on her face. It's been a few days since Whitney was arrested, and as soon as she heard the news of her arrest, she hasn't stopped smiling. She couldn't believe that the person who almost ruined her life, as well as the lives of many other people, had finally been brought to justice, and she couldn't wait to hear what sentence Whitney was going to be given. She was currently at the rooftop of a restaurant, waiting for Gavin to arrive, and while she was waiting, she had decided to catch up on the news on her phone because she was eag
Third-person POV Whitney was nervous, but she tried not to show how nervous she was, especially since she was going to be dealing with gang members, and she couldn't afford to let them know she was a novice. She wasn't about to give them the privilege of walking all over her, so she maintained a bold look on her face, and was very much ready to meet with them, close the deal and be on her way. She had been waiting for about half an hour now, and it was already late into the night.“Why the hell are they not coming?” she wondered out loud as her impatience grew. She typically wasn't a very patient person, and because of how dangerous what she was about to do was, she needed them to get here as soon as possible so that she can get this over with. After waiting for another five minutes, she would spot a thug like man walking toward her, and immediately think to herself that it had to be one of the gang members. “Whitney?” he asked when he finally approached her, and she couldn't h
THIRD PERSON POV“Are you certain that if you see the face of the person you can tell?” The police officer asked the elderly man who claims to have seen someone visit the late Mr. Robin before he died.“Yes, I am certain. That day a lady came by the house. I was taking a stroll around that street. The street is usually quiet because nobody lives there. That cottage is the only cottage there and each time I took a stroll there, I never saw anyone so I was surprised to see a young pretty lady.” The man revealed. He continued with his statements, “I didn’t see her face at first until she turned to look around before entering the house.”“It was during the day that she entered the cottage but at midnight, I saw that lady leaving the cottage and you might be wondering what I was doing there so I will tell you,” he said to the officers before they questioned him any further.“As an old man, I take a stroll a lot of the time because of my legs. It was quite late when I was returning to my h
Whitney's Pov I was seriously running out of money, and it was making me anxious. I had spent way too long at the hotel, as well as spending a lot of money there, but after the stunt I pulled in Gavin's house, I really checked out of the hotel and came to a much cheaper one. I couldn't remember the last time I stayed in such a cheap hotel, but because I didn't have any more money to spluuch and I also needed to remain low-key for a while, I had no other choice but to forcefully enjoy my stay here. I still hadn't heard any news on what happened in the house, but I was desperately hoping that I would hear about Monique's death because that was the only thing that could make me happy. I desperately needed to hear that she was paying for mocking me and that Gavin was whiling away in his misery for daring to make a fool of me. I had a television on for that reason, and I also kept scrolling and scrolling on the internet to see if the news would come up. It had been almost a da
Third-person Pov Despite everything, Monique still could not believe what she had just experienced. It all still felt like a dream to her, and she was waiting for someone to wake her up from this horrible nightmare that she just had. If there was one thing she had avoided all her life, it was getting involved in any situation that could lead to a fire. She was always extra careful when it came to anything that could cause a fire, so the fact that she experienced being in a fire again after trying so hard to avoid it all her life made her feel like she was losing her mind. It also reminded her of everything that she had gone through in her childhood, starting from how she would have died in the fire that her father started if her mother hadn't protected her and how a fire was what ended her mother's life. It had all come rushing back to her in that moment, and now that she was out of danger, she couldn't remember the fear she had felt while it was happening and how it had resur
THIRD PERSON POVIt was the day for Whitney to meet up with the men Cole wanted her to meet. She had six hours before the said time but she had something else going on in her mind.“I think it’s best I do this now before going over there,” she said to herself. As much as she wanted to relax and wait for some other time, for some reason, she felt now was the perfect time for her to do what she wanted. “Do it. Don’t do it. Do it. Don’t do it.” She chanted until she decided to do what it was that she had in mind because she knew that she wouldn’t be able to get it off her mind if she didn't do it.She changed into an entirely different outfit that consisted of a short and white polo shirt. She put some kerosene in a small container. She put on a blackface cap before leaving the hotel room. She didn’t have any makeup on as she wanted her disguise to be so perfect. Whitney planned to infiltrate Gavin’s mansion and set the room where Monique was on fire. She had been thinking about it sinc
THIRD PERSON POV“I am never going to lose. I am not one to lose and Gavin chose the wrong person to mess with.” Whitney muttered to herself as she watched Gavin and Monique walk away look so happyShe clenched her fist with a frown on her face as knots in her stomach tightened. It hurts so much that she feels this way. She didn’t expect any of this to happen. When she did what she did for him, she expected to have a but it seems Gavin wouldn’t give her that and she refused to lose. She had lost everything as it was and even if she had to do the worst of it all to get what she wanted then she’d do it and if she could not get what she wanted then nobody would get what they wanted. With that thought in her, she walked away with so much in her mind. She was thinking of her to fight back and what to do to make Monique pay. When she returned to her hotel room, she went for a long shower because it was usually in her showers, for the craziest of her ideas. When she came out of the bathroom
Whitney's Pov I was in my car, waiting outside Gavin Jones's estate to see if at any point he would come out of the house.I had tried calling him a few more times, but it seemed like he had completely blocked my number, which made absolutely no sense, and it annoyed me in ways that I couldn't even begin to describe. I wanted to see if I would run into him by chance, so I was waiting for him and hoping that he would come out of the house so that I would pretentiously run into him and ask him why he was avoiding me after I helped him. After waiting for almost two hours and wondering if I should give up or not, I finally spotted a car driving out of the estate. I couldn't see who was behind the car, but seeing how one of the security guards bowed, I concluded that it had to be Gavin and no one else. My curiosity getting the better of me, I followed behind the car and drove behind it for about an hour until the car finally stopped in front of a spa that I recognized. When I realize
Third-person Pov “Can you explain to me what the hell you're doing here, dad?” Gavin questioned impatiently as he stared at his father with an annoyed look on his face. He could immediately tell that his mother had gotten uncomfortable seeing that his father had suddenly shown up, and the last thing he wanted was for his mother to be uncomfortable. “What is it, Gavin? Can't I come here to see my ex-wife after she finally recovered from her stroke? Am I in the wrong for coming to pay her a visit?” Gabriel Jones questioned, wearing an amused look on his face that only pissed Gavin off even more.He turned to look at his mother and Monique, who were both staring back and forth at them with confused looks on their faces as well. “Mon, could you please escort my mother to her bedroom and keep her there until I'm done escorting this man out of the house?” he requested.Gabriel scoffed. “I didn't come here to see you, and I'm definitely not going to be escorted out of here without speak
