“Reginald & Berkley,” I muttered as the car pulled in front of the building, the firm’s name emblazoned on a large signpost. Sonia peered out of the window for a moment before turning to face me.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to tag along? I don’t want...” she started, but I cut her off with a shake of my head.

“I’ll be alright,” I said, though my voice lacked conviction.

Sonia raised an eyebrow. “That doesn’t sound convincing enough,” she noted, glancing again at the firm’s imposing façade.

“I don’t think anything I say would convince you,” I replied with a slight smile, and she chuckled.

“You’re right. After everything we’ve been through in the last few hours, there’s nothing you could say to make me take my eyes off you,” she responded, pouting slightly.

“Well, I need some time alone with the lawyer. You can’t follow me into their office,” I insisted.

“You’re right,” she conceded, reaching into her pocket for her phone. After a quick glance at the screen, she took note

CHARLOTTE“What do you mean?” I asked, my voice laced with confusion. He smiled, continuing to fiddle with the pen in his hand. His words had struck a nerve deep within me, leaving me uneasy.“First, you need to tell me why you’re here, Ms. Edwards. Then, I’ll see how I can help. My opinions can wait,” he said, maintaining eye contact as I recounted my experience at the house.“I want my house back,” I said firmly. He sighed. “It belongs to my family, and I can’t let anyone take it away.”He set the pen down and leaned forward to pick up a file. “This is all the information we have on the Narhzy family,” he began, handing the file to me.I opened it and couldn’t help but chuckle as I skimmed through the single sheet of paper inside. “This is it? There’s barely anything here,” I said, looking up at him.“Exactly. The Narhzy family has been holding the corporate world hostage in these parts for years. Their influence even crosses international borders. No one can dig up any dirt on them

CHARLOTTEI let out a relieved sigh as we passed through the gates. Once the car stopped in front of the door, I quickly got out and hurried towards the elevator. I didn’t want to wait for Sonia to finish debriefing the guards—I needed to call Maria back and sort through everything that had transpired at the firm before she had the chance to ask more questions. As the elevator doors closed and it began moving upward, I took out my phone and dialed Maria’s number. She answered on the first ring.“Hi Maria, I’m sorry I missed your calls. I was with the lawyer. How are you?” I said.“Hello, Signora. I’ve been worried since I arrived in Milan. Are you alright? How did the meeting go?” she replied, her tone filled with concern.“I’m alright, Maria—just a little shaken, but I’ll get over it. The meeting…” I paused for a moment, considering my next words. “...It showed me that I’m about to step into a world where people are ready to fight dirty.”“I’m guessing that means the lawyer is willin

CHARLOTTE“Hi, Ms. Edwards,” Mr. Berkley muttered, as I stepped out of the vehicle. He was dressed entirely in black, and I realized I hadn’t paid enough attention to notice his outfit when we met at the office. He was waiting in the parking lot, and he started to take off his coat when he noticed my sleeveless top.It was warm when we left, so I didn’t think about bringing a jacket. But now, the weather seemed to mirror the turbulence in my mind as the winds picked up. I rubbed my palms together and stood beside him, resisting the urge to turn around and look at the car. I could feel Sonia’s gaze burning a hole in my back through the passenger window, and I chuckled lightly.“I see you ditched the convoy,” he said, wrapping the coat around me.“Thank you,” I uttered, nodding. “Getting her to leave the other guards was easier than I expected, but she’s not thrilled about being here again,” I added as we started walking off the premises.“You don’t seem thrilled to be here either,” he

CHARLOTTE"Are you alright?" Sonia asked as soon as I stepped into the car. I closed the door and chuckled, running my hands through my hair."I don't know. I don't think I'll be alright for a long time. Everything keeps taking one drastic turn after another," I replied. She arched an eyebrow and turned to the driver."Drive," she said. He nodded slightly and started the ignition. "Still don't think there's anything I can do to help?""You're getting me away from here before it starts crawling with cops. That's the best thing you can do right now," I answered as the car sped through the streets. I glanced at the night sky and sighed. "I need a bottle of wine.""You mean a glass," Sonia corrected from her seat. She kept her eyes on the road, but I knew exactly what her reaction to my desire for alcohol would be. "Right?" she added, and I rolled my eyes."No, I meant what you heard. I'm going home to drink an entire bottle of wine. Will I wake up feeling terrible the next day? Probably.

CHARLOTTE“Ms. Edwards?” Sonia’s voice called, but it sounded so faint and distant that I thought I was imagining it. “Ms. Edwards,” she repeated, and I felt my body shake lightly. I opened my eyes and blinked in confusion as the room was filled with guards who looked ready to draw their weapons at the slightest inclination. My throat felt dry, and I tried to reach for the bottle of water on the bedside table, but one of the guards snatched it away, muttered something, and handed it to his companion. “What’s… What’s going on?” I stammered as Sonia sat on the bed with a relieved expression. “Sonia?” I continued, but she shook her head slowly.“I’ll explain everything in a moment, but we need to get you out of here first. You need a doctor, and I’m sorry I failed you again,” she answered. My expression morphed into a frown as I looked at her in confusion. I started to say something, but one of the guards stepped forward and whispered something into her ear. She nodded, and they all file

CHARLOTTE“I’m confused,” I murmured, lowering my gaze, trying to process everything she had just said. Sonia started to respond, but a knock at the door interrupted her. I watched as she hurried over, stepping outside and locking the door softly behind her. I wanted to move, but even sitting up was a struggle—my body simply refused to cooperate.“The law firm,” I muttered to myself, scanning the room. Panic surged as I realized it was nowhere to be found. If I had been out for so long, I might have missed the crucial information the lawyer had regarding the case. As much as I tried to push the thought aside, I knew in my gut this was tied to the Narzhy family. The speed at which they acted was baffling. I tried to wrap my mind around how they could have moved so swiftly. A flash of memory—the car that drove past us at the scene—flickered in my thoughts. Could we have been followed? Sonia returned, her expression heavy with guilt. I could see the regret on her face, likely wishing we

CHARLOTTEFew things have knocked the wind out of my sails, like receiving this news. Everything spun momentarily, and it felt as if someone had thrown a brick at my head. I started to feel faint, my heart felt like it would burst, and my palms grew clammy as beads of sweat formed on my forehead.“What do you mean, he’s dead?” I asked, struggling to collect my thoughts. “He can’t be dead; he just sent me this,” I added, showing her the texts I’d received from him.She stared at the phone’s screen for a moment, then sighed. “Signora, I—” she began, but I shook my head vigorously.“No,” I interrupted, defiance etched on my face. “He can’t be dead, not when we’re making progress with the case. He—” My words faltered as I began to cry. She reached for my hands and held them.“I know it’s hard to accept, and I’m so sorry you had to hear it like this. I was hoping to wait until you were feeling better before saying anything, but he’s dead. He really is,” she said slowly, releasing my hand w

CHARLOTTESonia had left the room, mentioning she needed to update the guards on the current situation. I was glad to have a moment to myself. Lying in bed, I replayed our conversation in my mind—everything was happening too fast. I glanced at my phone, tempted to call the firm, but I couldn’t bring myself to pick it up. Someone was dead because of me, and I couldn’t shake off the weight of that reality.A knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts, and Sonia re-entered.“You don’t have to stay,” I said, watching her walk to the bathroom to wash her hands. “You’ve been through quite a bit yourself. You should rest.”She stepped out, drying her hands with a towel before tossing it into the laundry basket. “I can’t leave you alone,” she replied, sitting in the chair positioned near the door. “The guards are supposed to take shifts watching you, but I figured you wouldn’t be comfortable with that.”“You’re right,” I admitted. “I wouldn’t. I just need to be alone right now to think.”So

Charlotte“Well… it might be because you’ve been with the club since its inception. You’re familiar with the system you created for it,” Sonia suggested, turning her gaze back to the road. “If you feel out of place at the firm, why not take some time to learn what makes the company tick?”I mulled over her suggestion for a moment, then chuckled lightly.“That’s a great idea, but I already have so much on my plate. I can’t imagine adding anything more to the pile…” My words trailed off as a spark of inspiration lit up in my mind.“What is it?” she asked, glancing at me briefly before refocusing on the road.I sighed, a small smile forming. “I think you’ve just given me a brilliant idea.”She looked over, her expression confused, before returning her attention forward. “I don’t know what you’re planning, but whatever it is, keep thinking about it. CharlotteI took Thiago’s advice and decided to make the best of the situation. Surprisingly, things began to take a turn for the better. The meeting with the board exceeded my expectations; they understood the reasons behind the drop in sales and were eager to suggest solutions, even refining the ideas I’d presented.Their willingness to collaborate reignited a sense of purpose in me.After wrapping up at the firm, I headed to the university to pick up my schedule for the semester and familiarize myself with the campus. It felt strange to be surrounded by so many young people leading lives so different from mine. There was an energy here - a mix of excitement and uncertainty - but I decided to embrace it.I wasn’t ready to dive into any of the pre-formed cliques, nor was I eager to make friends right away. I resolved to take it slow and let things unfold naturally. The other classes I’d been taking to prepare myself for the semester were voluntary, but now it was time for the real de

CHARLOTTEIt had been a week since I started working at Thiago’s firm while also doubling as the manager at the club. Combining both activities had been nothing short of hectic.Every morning, I dropped by the office to review the previous day’s reports, stayed for an hour or two, and then rushed off to school for my classes, which had just begun. At night, I stopped by the club to supervise activities. I’d given up bartending for a while - it was clear that taking on that role too would be overextending myself.I also stopped spending the night at the club like I used to, knowing I needed at least a little sleep to function the next day. After a week of this chaotic schedule, I felt like I needed to drop something and focus on one thing. That morning at the office, I resolved to decide what worked best for me.Abandoning school was out of the question; I’d only just started, and giving up on something I so desperately wanted wasn’t an option. That left me choosing between the club an

Did you even consider that, or was it fun for you to let me walk into the church and get embarrassed in front of everyone?”“Elena, let me explain… I wasn’t… I didn’t…” I stammered, but she stopped pacing and stepped toward me.“Since when do you stammer? Since when do you not know how to articulate yourself? Rogerio, you better say something that makes sense right now, or I swear to—” She stopped short as I raised my hands in defeat.“I was anxious!” I blurted out before I could think. ROGERIOI hadn’t planned to leave Elena at the altar until I received that message; in fact, I was resigned to my fate.As much as I hated how things had turned out, I convinced myself that I wasn’t going to track down Charlotte to confirm whatever suspicions I had. There was no use pining over a life filled with uncertainty or sulking over the road not taken - until I got that warning. The message warned me there would be a shootout at the wedding, and in all my years of being trailed by security personnel, I knew better than to treat such a message lightly.I discussed the issue with my head of security, instructing him not to inform the other guards or anyone else until we could trace the source of the message.Unfortunately, our efforts proved futile. The lead brought us to an empty, nearly dilapidated warehouse on the outskirts of Milan that was up for sale. When we inquired about the ownership under the guise of buying and renovating the property, we discovered the owners were d

ELENAAs she spoke, I zoned in and out, trying to think of how best to handle the situation my way. It seemed like she was trying harder to convince herself that what had happened was a mistake than to make me feel better. At least she stayed to console my family, unlike my own, whose reputation - now tarnished - was more important than the emotional torture their child was enduring.I inhaled deeply, closed my eyes, then exhaled slowly. When I opened them, I noticed Keisha had gotten up from her seated position and was moving toward me.It felt like she anticipated what I was about to do before the thought even took shape in my head. I stood up, bundled up my dress, and started running out of the church. She followed suit, trying to catch up with me.“Elena!” she yelled, trying to get me to stop or at least slow down. “Elena! Where are you going?”“To fix this,” I answered without looking back or slowing down. “To get to the bottom of this rubbish and fix it before it’s too late,” I

I turned to Keisha, who was visibly shocked at the outcome of things.I tried to say something, but no words came out when I opened my mouth. My heart started racing, and my palms felt sweaty as I lowered myself to the floor and sat down.Keisha tried to get me to stand, but I wouldn’t budge - I simply refused to move from that spot.“My worst nightmare has become a reality,” I muttered, chuckling, though nothing seemed funny at that point. I stared at Rogerio’s grandfather and his mother as they rose from their seats and walked toward me.The priest reached the altar before them, extinguishing the candles near the pulpit. ElenaI pondered her words, watching as she selected three pairs of shoes from the options the attendant had laid out.She placed them on the table and asked me to choose one. I pointed at a random pair, and she giggled with excitement, stating that she was going to pick the same pair too but asked for it in a different colour.I tried to push thoughts of what she had said about having a child out of my mind, but they lingered. They reminded me of what Thiago had said about Charlotte. He had assured me she wasn’t pregnant, but what if he was lying?Or worse, what if he had been misinformed? If Rogerio ever found out she was pregnant, our marriage would end before it even began. My conversation with Maria crept back into my thoughts, and I sighed. She was right. I’d never admit it to her face, but in some ways, she was. “Hey,” Keisha said, her voice breaking through my reverie. “Cheer up. ELENAIt had been days since I last spoke with my father, and as the wedding date loomed closer, I knew I should call him to confirm his outfit and ensure there weren’t any last-minute plans he’d decided to spring on me. But I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I knew the conversation would inevitably shift to the estate, and right now, I wanted to focus solely on the wedding. In a matter of hours, I’d be married to Rogerio, and with that milestone reached, I could finally exhale and move on to more pressing matters in my life. For the first time in ages, I felt genuinely excited about something, and I wasn’t about to let anything ruin it. To keep myself in this bubble of bliss, I delegated all inquiries about my family’s involvement in the wedding to my assistant. Meanwhile, I waited for the personal shopper to arrive at my apartment. I had decided, quite impulsively, to get a new dress. The style of the one I’d originally chosen no longer appealed to me, and honestly, I was l
