The small plane taxied down the runway and slowly rolled to a stop a short distance from a waiting car. Inside the plane, Blake unbuckled Iris's seatbelt and lifted her out of the seat. Putting her down, he took her hand and led her toward the exit. They walked down the stairs and made their way to the car. As they drew near, a man stepped out and opened the back door. Blake helped Iris in and got in after her. The chauffeur closed the door and then slid behind the wheel. He started the car, adjusted the rear-view mirror, and glanced at Blake in it.“Where to, Mr. Echols?” he asked.“What would you like to see first, sunshine?” Blake asked Iris.“A toy store,” Iris muttered.“The little one has spoken,” Blake said. “Take us to ‘FAO Schwarz’, please.”“Very well, sir.” Thirty minutes later, the chauffeur pulled up alongside the toy store. Blake and Iris got out and headed toward the entrance. The minute they entered the building, Iris's eyes grew huge and
Her head was throbbing so badly she almost felt the need to throw up. Fighting against the awful pain that was crippling every inch of her body, Nicola opened her eyes very slowly, squinting, trying to get images into focus, trying to understand what was going on, where she was… She found herself in a dimly lit room. There were no windows and the only furniture in the small space was the filthy bed she was lying on. The smell was awful... like she was in the middle of a dump field.“What is this place…?” Nicola whispered, trying to stay as calm as possible. Nicola attempted to sit up and realized she was tied to that bed. One end of the rope encircled her wrists, while the other end was tied to the headboard. Images of what happened came upon her like a landslide. At that point, fear raced through her and Nicola struggled to break free.“Oh, come on…” she said slowly, trying not to let her kidnapper know she was awake. “Come on… Please…” But the
SEVEN MONTHS EARLIER There had to be something she could do, but what? Nicola Rhymes looked at her surroundings and sighed. She jumped at the chance to leave her past behind, come to another city, and plan her future here, in Long Beach… And now…? Well, she was in over her head. She had always been the one who wanted out… Out of the family, out of the drama, out of an unhealthy relationship, out of everything. Well, no one told her ‘be careful what you wish for, sweetie!’ because now she was stuck in a tiny apartment in the worst neighborhood in Long Beach, with no clue what to do. With no light at the end of the fucking tunnel.“This situation is slowly killing my spirit,” Nicola murmured. “If only Daphne would send me a sign…” She put her head in her hands and sighed. On the computer screen in front of her, was her budget for the next three months. No matter which way she plotted and planned, she only had
The night security guard of the ‘Echols Enterprises’ got up from his chair the moment he saw Blake.“As always, you’re the last one to go home, Mr. Echols…” he respectfully scolded Blake. “Busted... again!” Blake replied gently in a tired voice. “I’m afraid this is the cruel faith of a CEO, Paul: the first one to arrive in the office, the last one to go home.” Blake started walking towards the door but stopped.“Oh, I almost forgot, Paul… How’s your wife? She already had that heart surgery, am I right?”“You are, sir. She’s much better now,” the man replied sighing with relief. “The doctor said the surgery was a success and that he will allow Linda to continue her treatment at home.”“That’s wonderful!” Blake exclaimed and nodded with satisfaction. “There’s no place like home… The perfect place to heal every wound.”“Sir, I wanted to thank you again for everything you’ve done for my Linda. If it wasn’t for your help...”“Paul, there’s no need to thank me. You’ve b
The following morning, Nicola entered ‘Echols Enterprises’ and made her way across the marble-floored lobby to the bank of elevators. The sound of her pumps striking the floor was loud to her ears and she had to resist the urge to tiptoe. At the elevator, she pushed the button and tucked several strands of long blond hair behind her right ear. When the elevator arrived, Nicola stepped inside and pressed the button for the top floor. The doors slid open a minute later and Nicola walked out into a classy reception room. Daphne sat behind a desk talking on the telephone. She glanced toward Nicola and acknowledged her presence with a wave of her well-manicured hand. While she waited for Daphne to end her phone conversation, Nicola looked at the painting on the wall in front of her. It was of a catamaran sailing across the blue waters of a sea… or maybe an ocean. The sun was hanging high in the sky casting brilliant shades of white and yellow on the
He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck.“I hope you won’t think of my curiosity as a lack of respect towards you. Since you talked about checking my past jobs, I thought it’s only fair for me to know all about your… Ehm… situation.” Blake nodded and Nicola felt calmer.“You are right. Well, my little girl has had three nannies in the last two years. The first one had a difficult time following my rules, the second one liked to sneak her boyfriend into the house at night and the last one had a nasty habit of smoking... and I’m not talking about cigarettes only. She said it was therapeutic. I don't allow this kind of thing near my daughter.”“I see,” Nicola added and shifted in the chair. “I can assure you, Mr. Echols, I don't smoke. I don't have a boyfriend, but if I did, I wouldn't be sneaking him into your home. It would be disrespectful not to mention completely unprofessional. Finally, I don't have a problem with following rules.” She grinned.“As lon
“Daddy, wake up! Let’s have breakfast! Wake up! Wake up!” Blake felt Iris's small hand pat his left cheek, then the right one. He opened his eyes and stared at the little girl who was standing beside the bed. She was wearing shorts and a t-shirt with a picture of Anna and Elsa from the Disney cartoon ‘Frozen’ on the front. Her brown hair was up in pigtails, the left side was slightly lopsided. Taking his eyes off her, Blake glanced at the clock on the bedside table and saw it was a few minutes after seven-thirty. He reached out, grasped Iris gently, and lifted her onto the bed. She curled up next to him and he kissed her forehead.“Good morning, my sweet ray of sunshine.”“Good morning, Daddy,” Iris answered.“Tell me, baby girl, does Alma know where you are?” Blake asked. Iris shook her head.“Yeah… I didn't think so,” Blake said dryly. He brushed Iris's bangs out of her eyes.“Sweetie, in order to have breakfast together, I need to get up and
He walked over to the huge window and started talking on the phone. She looked Blake over, him standing this way giving her a new view of him. He was dressed in an elegant suit. His upper body was muscled and tight against the fabric… his entire body was perfectly sculpted and Nicola knew he would be hard and muscular all over. His face was defined by a strong jawline and the sharp planes of his face. His hair was dark and slightly longer on top, but brushed back off of his forehead. Despite all of this, it was his eyes that took her breath away, today more than yesterday. They were a deep blue and piercing. The moment she entered the living room, something happened… It was something she didn’t feel that much the day before, in his office. Blake looked at her and Nicola felt as though he was looking into her soul. His gaze felt so familiar. Like she knew him from another life… Nicola shook her head, trying to refocus on the t
