The weather suddenly changed and the sky rolled in dark clouds heavy with rain. Raindrops came in little showers until they gradually built up to become a heavy downpour.
I stood before the window, staring at the rain, a cigarette burning at the end of my lips.
Behind me, seated on the arm chair was Israel; the most ruthless, hardcore and feared Mafia boss.
Israel sat with his legs crossed, a glass of Hennessy wine in his hand. He was watching or rather studying me as if trying to evaluate the sort of man I was.
" I still find it hard to believe," I said after a long pause. " Not only did I wake up after being murdered, I awoke in the body of a Mafia boss. A Mafia boss who sold his soul to the devil in exchange for nine lives. Is it just me or does all these controversy doesn't just make any sense."
Israel took a sip, he didn't say anything.
" I really wished this was some sort of dream," I said, turning around to face him. " Cause if it isn't I might go crazy."
Israel glared at me. " Don't be a dumbass. You've gotta pull yourself together. If you lose your grip and act up, my enemies would think I've gone nuts. Once your enemies are aware of your flaws and weakness, they won't hesitate to blow the first strike. This is why from now on, Jericho, you and I would have to trust each other."
I stared at him, apparently questioning myself. " Trust you? Why in the world should I trust you?"
" Because you're deeply involved in this shít as much as I am. You can't find your way around my empire. I shall guide you on whatever difficulties you might find yourself in."
I decided it was time I made my intention clear. " What do you want from me?"
Israel stirred his wine glass. " I want two things. The Giovanni empire is on a brink of ruin. When you're a big shot like me, the whole world is gunning for you. You become the target of many people; people who wants everything you own: your houses, your wives, your cars, your dog. I'm dead but my will isn't. My enemies don't know this. This is why I chose you. I want you to save the Giovanni empire."
I was about to say something when he interrupted me sharply.
" I'm not finished," he stared stonily at me. " Secondly, I want you to eliminate my enemies– all of them. I know what you're trying to say. You're unsure of yourself. You don't think you can do this."
" That's alright," I said. " What you're asking of me is too much."
" Too much?" Israel raised an eyebrow. " All you had to do are two things."
" I can't do it," I replied him curtly. " Find someone else. I'd rather remain dead than go about fulfilling your selfish desires."
Israel slowly rose to his feet. The way he stood up was like that of a raging lion, growling for a kill. He looked like he was about to explode.
" You fool!" He barked at me. " You spineless fool. You should be thanking me. I gave you another chance to start life over. A new beginning ten times more than your past miserable life. I am your savior. If it weren't for me, you'd be a lost soul without a cause."
I looked away. " I never asked for any of this. Why did you pick me?"
Israel came over and grabbed my collar. He jerked me close to him and glared straight into my eyes. " Why the hell did I pick you? To be honest, I don't know why. There were numerous names on the list for me to exchange souls with but I ended up picking an idíot like you. Ever since I woke up in your mind, I was busy going through your memory. You ever wondered how you got murdered?"
My eyes widened. " I don't."
Israel's green eyes glittered at mine. " Well I know how you got murdered, Jericho. I finally got to understand why I picked you. You died a meaningless death just like I did. We've got a lot in common but you chose to be an idíot all throughout your entire life till your death."
" What do you mean?" I asked as he released my collar.
He returned back to his armchair and lit a cigarette. " Let's start from the beginning shall we? You met a show girl in Las Vegas and fell in love with her, right?"
I was spooked. I never told him that. " You're correct. How did you know that?"
Israel grimaced. " You're the most lousiest man I've ever met, Jericho," Israel smoked, his eyes like holes. " You got married to a show girl at forty-five without a prenup cause you thought you were in love and have no need for it. For making such a fúcking damn mistake, you're a bloody fool. What makes you think would interest a show girl to marry a mere farmer who's a forty years old virgin? Money, fool. It's money. You had to adopt a son simply because she doesn't want to ruin her looks and shape because of pregnancy."
"Obviously, she knew you hadn't money in cash but you've got assets. You've got lands and animals that could be worth over millions if sold. Now here's what happened. It's the same story that goes around every bar men tell over alcohol. Your best friend visits and was immediately captivated by your new wife. She must've been a beauty– all show girls are. She noticed she's got a hook in your best friend and sees her chance to drain you dry."
He paused, glaring at me under his lashes. " It's my bet you're poor in giving a woman pleasure. Apparently, you can't satisfy your woman. You either came too early or you just couldn't give her an orgasm. One thing's for certain, you suck at séx. You love your farm and usually stay out till late at night. While you're out there trying to make some living, your best friend was busy fúcking your wife in your matrimonial bed."
Israel blew smoke at my direction. " In other words, your best friend did your job perfectly for you. What happens next? Your wife started making it a routine, whenever you're away, your best friend comes around and gets a blow job and a wet pússy ready for him. Then one day, she plants a seed in his mind: the seed of murder. She won't tell him plainly she wanted you dead. Women aren't like that. They're gifted at insinuation. That's why I called it a seed. She gives your best friend a faint idea that they might not see each other quite often like they used to. Your best friend would panic. He was inlove with her. He wouldn't want to lose her. The thought of you having her body all to yourself sickens him. Then your best friend suggests they elope."
Israel refilled his glass and took a sip from it. " On the face of it, eloping doesn't sound like a bad idea but what about money? This was the barrier to your best friend's eloping scheme. Then your wife drops the bomb. She's seen your will. The farm belongs to her and your adopted son. Why wait for you to die when she can hasten things up? As expected, your friend won't buy the idea. That's when she starts pushing him away. The game of the mind comes to play. Your wife puts herself as the forbidden fruit. Unattainable and out of reach. Your best friend hungers for her but he can no longer have her. If he must have her, he only had to do one thing; kill you."
Israel lit another cigarette and scowled at me. " Never let anyone except your lawyer lay sight of your will. There are a lot of people out there who feel entitled to your wealth. By showing them your will, you raise their hopes and encourage them to wish you dead quickly. Look at you. Now you're dead. Your beloved wife is probably at some hotel getting screwed by her lover. I can imagine her pretty face begging him to pound deeper inside her. She worth millions so she can do whatever she pleases."
I balled my hands into fists and whispered bitterly. " S-stop!"
Israel cocked his head. " Huh? Are you feeling bitter inside? The truth hurts, doesn't it?"
I didn't say anything. I found his words hard to believe and yet he was right. I knew my wife and my best friend were responsible for my murder. What I never knew was how they did it and how long they've been at it.
Israel continued. " This is your chance, Jericho. A new beginning. You died a meaningless death but now you don't have to die anymore. You have nine lives. What's mine is yours. My cars are yours. My houses are yours. My empire are yours. My wives are yours. My cats are yours. This is a new life for you. Take advantage of it."
I remained where I stood, breathing heavily. I was angry. Angry at myself for bring stupid enough to not have read the signs of my wife's scheme to have me murdered.
I was angry I wasted sixty-five years of my life a farmer. This was my chance to start anew.
I glanced up to look at Israel but he wasn't there anymore.
My eyes widened. " Huh? Where did he go?"
The table was empty. The ash tray was empty and cleaned and the Hennessy wine was back at the wine shelf neatly and untouched.
It felt as if no one had been in this room except me.
Israel had vanished.
I sat down on my bed and ran my hand over my face. It was just as he had told me. He was in my mind.
But he was real. Our conversation was real. I recalled his last words:
***This is your chance, Jericho. A new beginning. You died a meaningless death but now you don't have to die anymore. You have nine lives. What's mine is yours. My cars are yours. My houses are yours. My empire are yours. My wives are yours. My cats are yours. This is a new life for you. Take advantage of it.***
Israel was stepping out of a night club in Las Vegas surrounded by his men. They walked straight for the parking lot, their eyes and ears alert for trouble.Knife followed his boss closely behind while the others guarded them. A while ago, Israel had been tipped by the club manager about some men waiting outside the club. They were the Capellos.Israel had only but a few men; about five along with knife. Reports came in the Capellos were a dozen men and heavily armed. Analysing the situation on ground, it wouldn't be long before the Capellos storm into the club to kill him.The club manager was under Israel's organization and was very loyal to him. He showed Israel the backdoor which led straight to the parking lot.Knife had suggested they remain in the club and fight but Israel thought otherwise. If it comes to exchanging bullets, he wouldn't want anyone in the club getting hurt. He was cautious about getting the cop
Spaghetti carbonara was served to me by Bistro himself. He wore his chef outfit while he laid out the dish for me. My mouth watered the moment I saw my meal. " This looks delicious." Bistro gave a wane smile. " It's today's special but I made it a lot more spicy. Just the way you like it." It's funny how I could easily interact freely with him in Italian. We were both speaking the language as if we were speaking English. Bistro drew out a seat opposite mine after filling my glass with wine. While he waited for me to start eating, I took my time to regard the food. There were no trace of poison in the wine or food. If there was one I would have detected it immediately. I took a bite then another and another. It was so good. I nearly cried for joy. I've never tasted anything so delicious in my entire life. Bistro was watching me, surprised to find my expression like that of a child who just got a Christmas present. " This is," I said, drinking my wine. " This is classic, Bist
I stood staring at her as she apologized once more and moved away for the restaurant's garden. I was still staring at her as she rolled her hips in a sensational way that reminds me of a wild cat. Again, I got that unmistakable electric vibe. This woman was dangerous. I don't know why but the feeling was just there like it's been there for a long time, waiting to be awakened. Somehow, I thought I must've seen her somewhere but I couldn't place where. " Who's that dish?" I asked Bistro. Bistro needn't be told I've taken a keen interest in this girl. " Her name's Ginny. She's one of the regulars around here. She recently bought a VIP membership green card," he then wrinkled his nose in disgust. " She works as a stripper at the Vegas Moon club. You don't wanna get involved with a hoe like her. She's bad news. She's also a messed up junkie when she's not sober." This only made me more interested in her. A messed up junkie. So she was a drug addict. I left Bistro and followed h
BANG!!!! The noise resounded in my ears as I fell into darkness. I couldn't feel anything, couldn't hear anything. The noise of the gun was all that I heard. It's dark and it's cold. Was this what death felt like? " Hey, idiot," a voice came to my ears. " Wake up." " Huh?" I was confused. " Who's calling me an idíot?" The voice came again out of the darkness. " Get up, you quitter. Nap time is over. Wake up. Idiot, wake up." I flared my eyes opened to find myself in a deserted area. I was standing beside a man who stood with a cigarette burning at the end of his lips. It was Israel. We were both standing on a hill overlooking the sea. The beach was a little further away from us. It was a dark moonless night and the beach was as quiet and as peaceful as a graveyard. I never thought I was ever gonna see this dude again neither had I ever thought I'd be glad to see him. " Israel, I—" " Shut up, idiot," He cut me short. " If you're about to tell me you missed me I migh
The crocodiles snapped their fangs hungrily, gazing up longingly at Ginny. Ginny was as pale as the belly, of a fish. I've never seen anyone so frightened in my life. Can't say I blamed her. If I were in her shoes, I'd be scared stiff. Rather than being eaten alive, I'd rather take a shot in the back. The pain would go away and it'd all be over in an instant when I shut my eyes and drowse into darkness. Seriously.Being eaten alive by a swarm of crocodiles wasn't my ideal of death– I swear. So yeah, I understood Ginny. She had every right to be frightened to her bone marrow. She yelled at me. " Let me out of this thing. Let me out."I didn't say anything. Even her voice sounded like a dying frog. " I've got a few questions for you, buster," I said, pointing at the muscular dude. " What's your name?"" Clive!" He said, raising his voice so I could hear him clearly. " My name's Clive."Knife had ordered someone to bring a chair for me. I wandered over to the fancy cushioned chair
" Don't get excited, boss," knife said, his voice like ice. " I just need answers. Who are you?" We sat in the Rolls Royce, studying each other's eyes, the automatic revolver aimed at me. I didn't say anything. I couldn't. My mind raced with numerous thoughts but it was in a mess. His eyes told me he was going to shoot. If I said something stupid or out of line, I'd have a bullet pulled into me. Up till now, Knife was the least of my worries cause I felt all would go my way. Guess I was wrong. After a moment silence, knife spoke through locked teeth. " Come down, buster." I had to finish my whiskey before I stepped down. I needed that drink badly. My throat and lips had gone completely dry. Once outside the Rolls Royce, Knife led me to the end of the cliff, the gun covering me. Then he stopped and snapped at me. " Turn around so I could see you." I turned around and looked him directly in eye. In my mind, I was done for. Once he pulls that trigger, I'd receive multiple sho
For the next two days, I was kept busy. I processed Irene's divorce papers and attended to other businesses that needed to be attended to in Las Vegas. Irene didn't argue over our divorce. She was quiet and she seemed to gladly accept my decision. I had no idea why Israel set her up with Knife to cheat on him. Perhaps he needed a valid reason to have her divorced. Whatever reasons he might've had, he didn't relay it to me. During my free time, I went over Israel's journal. He was a very organized person. He had a private study where he locked up his most important records and documents. I spent time in his private studies, going over his records and journals. I was able to get an accountable information about Israel and his lifestyle. Israel always changes women every two years. It was more like a contract marriage. He gets married to a woman today and after two years, he kicks her out with a merge settlement. Despite being so bloody rich, he was one stingy bastard to women. He
The clang of the telephone clapper brought me upright in the bed. Ginny stirred beside me. She woke up, rubbing her eyes. " What was that?"" Just the telephone," I said. The telephone was at her side of the bed. She tried to reach for it. I put an arm across her chest, flattening her into the pillows. " I'll take it. Relax."I had to lean on her to reach the receiver, so I leaned on her and lifted the receiver off it's prong. " Hello?"" Boss, your brother's on the line. He wants to speak to you."I frowned as I recognized Knife's voice. " Who?"" Umberto," Knife replied. " Should I put him through?"I ran a hand over my face. " Sure."There was a click and a fruitful fat voice came on the line. " Israel?"I looked down at the small pale pretty face half buried in the pillow and smiled down at her. Ginny still looked good enough to eat. " Yes, Umberto. What's the problem?"Umberto began talking in strong Italian. " We're holding a meeting back home. We want you. Fly over to Rome
Author's POV:The television screen switched off as well as the camera. Lorelei crushed his cigar on the ashtray, slowly and hard. Inwardly, he was bitter with resentment and worries. If the information gotten through to him was true, then the situation was dangerous. How had Israel gotten immortality? Was he as ghost? It's been three times attempts have been made to kill Israel and yet he keeps coming back? What sort of diabolic power has be possessed?Rising up to his feet, Lorelei left the camera and proceeded to his Private elevator. The elevator shot him down four floors, stopping at a no entry door. The steel doors swished opened to reveal an enormous garden, possessing an artificial waterfall. The garden was beautiful, possessing big hedges on all places. Lorelei walked down the pavement down a stairs where he stood over a balcony. He adjusted his spectacles as his eyes studied the girls below.Little girls, not less than twelve years old and above wandered around the love
" Tell me the truth," I said. " Is Lorelei in South Africa?"Nagisa was lying flat on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. The thin sunlight coming through the mist highlighted her dark hair and deepened the shadows under her eyes. She didn't say anything. I could see she was hesitating. My lips lifted up in a mean smile. " You wouldn't say anything, would you?"She remained silent. I sighed. " Oh dear, it can't be helped could it?" Then I stood up and walked over to the tray of Knives on the table. " How about we play a game, Nagisa. For every question I ask you, if I don't get a valid answer, I cut off your fingers."Even that, didn't seemed to shake her. " What makes you think he isn't in South Africa?"" Now don't be difficult," I returned back to her with a razor sharp knife. " The fake Nagisa you set me up with told me Lorelei's in South Africa but I don't believe it. I think she's lying. What the hell, she is lying, isn't she?"Nagisa's white face was regaining it's colour no
I came over towards the bed and sat down beside Nagisa. She shriveled at the sight of me. I glanced down at her and smiled at her pretty face. I've never seen anyone so frightened like the way she was frightened. Her lips trembled as she spoke. " What's happening? Who're you?"It's funny isn't it? How many people who'd killed me always asked me that very same question. This power is amazing. You could get killed by your enemy and then when you return back to life, they start asking who you are. As if it were the first time seeing you in their life." I'm Israel," I said. " Your Nemesis."I was putting into words exactly what Lorelei had said to me. Now it's being directed to Nagisa. Nagisa gulped. " You're a ghost?"" More or less," I said. " Surprised?"Her eyes widened. " There were two of you. How's that possible?"I didn't want to get into details how I've worked everything out under her nose to capture her. It wasn't necessary. I needed something from her and I'm gonna get it
Let me take your mind back how it all happened. As I do so well. Everything was all planned out before I even got on my flight to Tokyo. When I mentioned I trusted Ginny, I did actually trust her. Why did I trust her? Well simply because she threw in with me and was willing to dump her former boss. Also, I got to realized she had a thing for me. Call it love if you like but I know when a woman's got hot pants for a man when I see one. Ginny didn't hide the fact that she liked me. Before my private jet landed in Rome, Knife and Ginny and I had already outlined the structure of our plans. Apparently, Ginny had exposed Nagisa's biggest secret. Nagisa wasn't just a poison expert, but she also had an incredible art in creating doppelgangers. She transformed young beautiful women to look exactly like her through the art of make-up. It's not rocket science nor magic. It's just pure art. I got to learn Nagisa did a six years course on theatre art. She was also a teacher in that field, t
Lorelei studied me for a long moment. My bet was he must be viewing me from a screen. I spotted a camera recording at the far corner of the wall. " Giovanni Israel," he said in a voice you could crack a nut on. " How long do you hope to hunt me down?"" Not as long as I hoped for," I said mildly. " Never thought you were a man all along."Lorelei laughed. It was uncanny how easy it was to converse with him without seeing his face. I really wished above all things to look at that bàstard's face. " Very funny, Israel," he said. " Which is why I've kept under cover all these years. My anonymous nature keeps me in the clear which is why it's difficult for you to catch me."I noticed Nagisa was preparing her poison. She didn't give me a second glance. " How does it feel, Israel," Lorelei said. " To be cornered like a rat?"" Feels horrible," I said. " Funny as it sounds but I've been through this road before."Lorelei could be smiling behind that screen. " I see you still have your sens
BANG!!!! A gunfire went off. I stopped in my tracks and fell on both knees. One of the Ninjas held me at gunpoint. He had driven a bullet into my left leg to stop me from reaching Nagisa. Quavering with rage and fury, I snarled at Ginny. " I should've killed you when I had the chance, you two-faced bítch."Ginny smirked. " Sorry, handsome. I cannot betray the Capellos. You can't serve two masters at the same time. I choose to serve Lorelei till the end of my life."I gritted in pains as my bullet wound began to heal. The bullet pulled out from my leg and dropped to the ground. Nagisa watched all these with rising interest. She was so calm and quiet, she scared me. " Where're the others?" She asked the Ninja with the gun. Her Japanese was strong and impressive when she speaks. Surprisingly, I could interpret the language as if it were English. " My men are hunting the Sienna woman. Regrettably, we lost the fat man."The were talking about Sienna and Knife. Nagisa asked quietly.
" How did it come to this?" I asked myself. " How did I ended up losing myself back there?"I remained seated on the chair, alone with my own thoughts. Lying lifelessly on the ground was Nagisa–dead. I didn't want to kill her. I had plans to use her in the future but Israel killed her before I could stop him.Why had he killed her?Was it because I resisted him from shooting Sienna? Or was it a means to threaten Sienna that he meant what he said about Killing her?Raising my hand to my face, I glared at the gun I had used to shoot Nagisa. These hands have been stained with too many blood. Was this what it felt like to be Israel?Sienna had been quiet after I had finally settled down. She left an hour ago and hadn't returned back. Knife and Ginny had heard the gunshots from outside but they didn't bother barging in. I was disgust with myself. I was disgusted because I realized I was losing my self. This wasn't me anymore. I was fast becoming an uncontrollable monster. No not a mons
I lit another cigarette and leaned against the barrister rail, overlooking the vast ocean. The moon was out with glittering stars across the waters. It was a lovely night. Perfect for love making, that is if you're crazy about séx under the moonlight. As I smoked, my mind came back to the conversation Nagisa and I had just had. It came as a shock to me when Nagisa revealed to me Lorelei was a man. It was the last thing I expected. I mean all these time, Israel must've been busy searching for a woman when in actual fact, he should be after a man. My reaction to this news showed my shock. I recalled our interrogating session:" Lorelei is a man?" I had asked, clenching hold of the arm of my chair and leaning forward at Nagisa. " How is Lorelei a man?"" He's a man all right," Nagisa said. " Don't ask me how? I don't know. He chose that name to keep his enemies off balance and confused. Taking the name of a woman gave him liberty to walk around freely without being targeted by his en
Nagisa sat at the back while Knife drove. I sat beside her, sticking the tip of my gun under her rib cage. I had taken the trouble of having her handcuffed. She wouldn't be causing any trouble as long as I had her hands cuffed behind her back. Sienna sat at the passenger seat at the front. She kept staring at Nagisa and I through the rear mirror. It had been a smooth operation. We sneaked out of the Chashitsu before the servants would realize the massacre. None of us said anything to each other during the long drive. You could feel the tight tension in the car.Suddenly, Nagisa spoke, " Where're we going?"I didn't know if to answer her or not. Knife glared at her through the rear mirror. His expression told me he disapproved of her greatly." Shut up," I said, threatening her with the gun. " I don't wanna pull a bullet through your heart."Nagisa smirked at me. " Try it. You wouldn't dare open fire in traffic. If you do, you'd be inviting the cops."The traffic was getting slow. Th
