[Myrtles Point of View]
"No... Mom!" I screamed on top of my lungs as I watched my mom being delivered to the emergency room.
She had sudden cardiac arrest earlier when we were having dinner. Everything was fine, then she started to gasp for air.
I sat at the bench outside of the emergency room and cried. Mom can't die yet. I'm not yet a doctor.
We're just a poor family of farmers near the countryside, not prosperous but definitely happy. One of the challenges we face is when one of us gets sick. We don't have enough money to pay for hospital bills, even for a check-up.
That's why I want to be a doctor. A doctor for the poor.
I waited until dawn and patiently waited for the doctor's update about my mom's condition.
"Excuse me, are you the patient's daughter?" A woman wearing glasses and a white coat approached me.
"Yes, how's my mom? Is she alright?" I asked.
"Actually, her condition is critical. She needs immediate surgery. If not, her heart may fail any time," the doctor uttered and smiled softly at me.
I feel like my world just collapsed.
I did my best to compose myself in front of the doctor and replied, "Uhm... How much is the operation? Do we need to pay for it already?" I asked worriedly.
"Since the surgery will happen in Switzerland, it will cost fifty billion dollars. Including her transport fee and other fees included. You need to pay the bill as soon as possible so we can schedule your mother's flight to Switzerland earlier," the doctor replied and scratched her neck.
I stood frozen, and my legs felt wobbly.
I will enroll in a medical university tomorrow. The savings I have are solely for my tuition only. Where will I get fifty billion dollars! If I combine all the family's savings, it's not even half of the required!
"Uhm... I... We don't have money to pay for the fees. Can't I just pay for it when I graduate from medical school? I promise I will pay for it." I held the doctor's hand and begged her.
"I'm sorry, dear. This is a do-or-die situation. If you can't pay for at least half of fifty billion dollars this week, we have no choice but to accept your mother's destiny," she replied in a sad tone and caressed my hand.
My tears started to flow like a river. I fell to the floor and kept crying until midnight.
My eyes already bulged, and I'm lying on this cold floor alone, thinking where would I get a considerable amount of money.
I feel so hopeless.
Why is this happening to me? Yesterday, everything was fine and happy.
The sayings are true. Beware if you feel intense happiness because it has a negative consequence.
I was about to close my eyes when I saw someone's shoes in front of me.
I looked at it, and it was probably a man. His shoes are one of the best brands in the world.
I had this weird thought of grabbing the shoes from his feet and selling them because they cost a million dollars. I could add it to save for mom's hospital bills.
But of course, I can't do that. I'll probably end up in jail.
I sighed heavily.
"Hey, miss, are you okay? Why are you lying on the floor when a bench is just right beside you?" a deep sober voice uttered.
I looked at where the voice came from, a tall man. My eyes widened in awe when I saw his face and body.
What a hottie, baby.
His brown hair is so handsomely fixed, creating a perfect hairline. And his jaw is so sharp, it could cut me in half.
His eyes are ocean blue staring right into my soul. His nose is pointed as well as Adam's apple.
He was wearing a suit and opened the first three buttons of his white polo.
I got my consciousness back and immediately stood up. Oh my goodness, that's so embarrassing!
"Uhm... sorry," I muttered and just sat down on the bench while I stared at nowhere.
"What are you doing here in the hospital? It's three a.m. in the morning." He sat beside me and looked at his watch.
Why is he so handsome by just looking at his watch?! His side view is immaculate.
I just stared at him, and he looked at me. I immediately gazed away.
"I don't have anywhere to go. I live in the countryside, and it's miles away from here. My mom, she's in the emergency room, and I don't know what to do. I felt so helpless." I replied, and tears were forming in my eyes again. I wiped them immediately.
"You can stay in my condo," he replied flatly.
I looked at him perplexed as he was just scrolling through his phone.
Did I hear that right?
"What did you say?" I asked him.
He leaned at the wall and looked at me. Gosh! Every time he looks at me, my heart is just beating like a running horse.
"I said, you can sleep in my condo," he mumbled and moved his face closer to mine.
It felt awkward, so I turned my head on the other side.
"I appreciate your offer, but I have to stay here and wait until my mom can go back home with me," I replied.
"You can just sleep in my condo, and I'll bring you back here later when the sun's at its peak."
Is he serious? How could he let a stranger sleep in his condo?
"Uhm, do you know any part-time job?" I asked him to change the topic. As if I would sleep in a man's condo. Even if he is rich and handsome, I don't trust him.
"Part-time? How much do you need?" he responded and brought his black leather wallet out of the pocket of his trouser.
Eh? Why is he rummaging through his wallet?
My eyes widened in shock when I saw the bills in his wallet. It's a ton of dollars!
"How much do you need?" he asked again.
I shook my head and glared at him. Is this some kind of a prank?
"Hey, mister rich man, I'm not interested in your money or in sleeping at your condo. I need to work hard to pay for my mom's bills," I replied and maintained a stern tone.
He stared at me for a while and shrugged his broad shoulders.
"Okay then. Goodbye," he shortly replied and started to walk away from me.
What just happened?
I sighed heavily and looked at the emergency room.
"Mom, I'm sorry I can't do anything right now. Once the sun rises later, I will look for a job here in this city." I whispered underneath my breath.
I sighed again and lay down on the bench. I felt my eyes drop and slept.
...
If all it is, is eight letters, why is it so hard to say?
If all it is, is eight letters, why am I on my own way?
Why do I pull you close and then ask you for space?
If all it is, is eight letters, why is it so hard to say?
Isn't it amazing how almost every line on our hands aligns?
When your hand's in mine.
It's like I'm whole again, isn't that a sign?
I should speak my mind.
I slightly opened my eyes as I heard someone singing. It's a very gentle and soft voice accompanied by a piano.
What a nice dream. I hope my dreams will always be like this. Someone singing a song for me makes me feel safe and loved.
I closed my eyes again and fell into a deep sleep.
...
I stretched my hands as I felt the scorching sun touching my skin.
As I regained my consciousness, I realized...
Where am I?
I immediately opened my eyes and sat down.
Is this a dream? I am lying down in a very soft and fluffy white bed! I don't want to wake up anymore if this is a dream. I've never slept in this kind of bed before! My siblings and I sleep in one wooden bed without a bedsheet at home. Just rugged pillows and blankets.
I looked around the room, and it was so magnificent! The windows are so big, and I can clearly see the shining sun's rays!
I turned around and saw a grand piano near the door.
Wait, didn't I hear someone singing when I was asleep? Where on earth am I?
I looked at my reflection in the big mirror with a gold frame, and I was wearing soft silk white nightwear.
What am I wearing? Too much of my skin is shown!
I covered myself with a blanket and rushed up to open the door, but someone was opening the door too!
Instead of going out, I pushed the door with all my might, but this person was too strong!
I gave up and just looked at the door.
A familiar man came inside. He is wearing a simple white shirt and brown shorts while holding a food tray.
"Good morning. Here's your breakfast." He moved to the bedside table and placed the tray of food there.
I just looked at him because I didn't know if this was a dream or this was real.
To prove it, I had no other choice but to come close to him and drop the blanket coving me.
When he turned at me, he looked at me from head to toe, and his jaw dropped.
Yeah, right, this is a dream. Whose jaw would drop if they saw me in this kind of clothing?
"Slap me," I commanded him.
"What?" he asked confusedly.
"I said slap me!" I shouted at him and closed my eyes.
I felt a strong force pushing me to the bed, and when I opened my eyes, this guy was right on top of me.
"This is not a dream, princess," he muttered and smirked.
[ Myrtle's Point of View ] I couldn't move, he was so close to me! But, our position is... What the freak? I bumped my forehead to his head, and he winced in pain. Haha! Good thing I always do that to my older brother. So, this is not a dream? I rushed to grab the blanket I dropped on the floor and covered my body again. What have I done? "Hey! Why am I here?" I screamed at the man sitting on the bed while I was at the corner, hiding. "Well, I saw you sleeping on the hospital bench, so I had no choice but
[ Myrtle's Point of View ] Sean went back to the car, holding two waffles in one hand and two drinks on the other. "Here you go, eat up," he said and handed me a strawberry waffle and a milkshake. Oh my gosh, strawberries are my favorite! "Thanks," I replied. He went inside the car and started driving again. "Sorry if I ask, but what happened to your mom?" he asked ambivalently. I sighed and smiled. "Well, mom is such a strong woman, but yesterday, when we had all fun and happiness, she suddenly had a card
[ Myrtle's Point of View ]We gasped for air as our lips parted. For a few seconds, I got back to my senses."Oh, gosh," I muttered and covered my lips. What have I done?!"Uh... That... that wasn't supposed to happen. I mean, those were my hormones. I didn't do it on purpose. Trust me-"He placed his pointer finger on my lips as a sign to shut me up."Shh, do you want me to shut you up using my lips again?" he said and moved closer to me."Stop. I feel like this doesn't seem right," I said and turned away from him. I proceeded to the shade and hugged myself.
[ Myrtle's Point of View ] I woke up feeling a little bit cozy. Whenever I wake up at home, I immediately think exhausted, knowing that I will plow soil the whole day. But now, it's a whole different feeling. Last night, Sean and I ended up arguing about which is better, pizzas with pineapples on top or not? When I tasted the Hawaiian pizza, it was the best among the three. Probably the best among all the pizzas in the world. And pineapple is the best ingredient. Sean said he didn't want pineapples on his pizza and then, he started fighting me. But thank goodness, I woke up peacefully.
[ Myrtle's Point of View ] "Myrtle Piena Saragoza, you are grounded for a week." THIS MAN IS CRAZY! How dare he ground me? "Hey! I am not your property! Also, I need to work! My mom's bills need to be paid!" I screamed at him while he was wearing his suit, preparing to go to work. "You are staying in my condo, Myrtle. That makes you my property. So, don't you dare go out unless I told you so," he said and winked at me. IS HE TEASING ME? "By the way, your mom's bills at the hospital are paid," he added and went out. That left me in shock. So, did he pay for my mom's hospital bills?
[ Myrtle's Point of View ]"Hey, Myrtle, you okay?"I turned to Kristina as I was washing the dishes in the cafe."Yeah," I replied."You seem to be thinking of something. Is your mother alright?" she asked again, and I nodded. I just nodded because I really don't know mom's condition right now.Actually, I was thinking about Sean. He really looked so concerned or something along those lines. If he really does have feelings for me, why? I mean, he barely even knows me.Geez, Myrtle, stop thinking about him."What did you and Yohan do yesterd
/Myrtle's Point of View/We rushed to the hospital as soon as Sean told me about mom. The hospital said that a nerve in her brain punctured, and that's very dangerous."Drive faster!" I screamed at Sean as he was also panicking. I couldn't help but yell at him because I was very worried."Oh, heavens, please let my mom live," I whispered underneath my breath. It was already 11 pm when we arrived at the hospital. As I rushed to my mom's room, she was being operated on."Miss, we have to do the operation to prevent the worst-case scenario. We will surely update you once the operation ends," a nurse said to me.I cried the whole night while think
/ Myrtle's Point of View /"You don't have to pay for anything. Just be my wife."And there he goes again. Every time he says that, it makes me mad but flustered at the same time.I punched his chest and went away. I can't believe him. I'm in a middle of a dilemma, and he still has the guts to tell me that.I was about to march away when he suddenly grabbed my hand."Please, Myrtle," he begged like a puppy.I pulled my hand from him and glared nonchalantly. "I don't want to talk about it, Sean. I have a lot of dreams and ambitions. Marriage is not part of it. I'm sorry," I said and ran away. All
Myrtle's Point of View"Did you wake up early?" Sean asked me as soon as he woke up.I slept beside Lemon last night. I couldn't bear sleeping with Sean after what he just muttered.I didn't reply.I don't even understand why I am feeling this way. It's so pathetic!Like I care if he still loves his ex-girlfriend.But still, he kept confessing his love to me! It's so confusing."Hey, darling, what's—""Could you stop calling me that? It's so annoying," I unintentionally yelled. This doesn't feel like me. My parents didn't raise me to just yell at anyone for no reason."Oh, is it your time of the month? I'm so sorry. I'll go buy you pads. Do you use tampons? What do you want to eat? Pizza? Chocolate?" he asked. His voice made me infuriated. I just don't want to hear him talk to me for a while."Yes, it's that time of the month. Please don't talk to me first because your voice an
Myrtle's Point of ViewIt's been a week since Sean and I went on our honeymoon. After that, we barely even talked about anything because he was always at work.I wondered if I really loved him, would I be annoyed if my husband lost his time for me?Anyhow, it's not my problem anymore. I know his job isn't as easy as I think it is. It's probably more complicated than plowing the fields."Good morning, Myrtle. Are you alright?" I heard Lemon's voice. She was peeping through my door."Oh, come in," I told her.Immediately, she jumped into my bed."Hey! Don't be so naughty!" I yelled at her."So, what have you been thinking?" Lemon asked me and placed a cola-flavored lollipop in her mouth."None at all," I replied and laid down on my bed beside her.Sean mentioned before that he was planning on making me his secretary once we got married. I think he didn't take that seriously. Until now,
Myrtle's Point of ViewThis day is the last day of our honeymoon slash vacation. It kind of saddens me because I wanted to spend more time here. However, Sean is abruptly needed in their company."You sure you're going to come with me already? You can stay here for a few more days," Sean said as he wiped his wet hair. He just came out from the shower."No, I'll come home too," I replied. It's going to be embarrassing if I stayed here alone. Well, in fact, I don't own this resort or anything here.Everything is Sean's.Sean sighed and looked at me. He looked apologetic."I'm really sorry we have to go back immediately. If you want, I can cancel my schedules and—""Don't worry about it, Sean. It's fine, and I'm fine. There's nothing you should worry about." I smiled at him.He just nodded and smiled back at me.For the last time, I gazed my eyes around the place and let myself drown in its bea
/Myrtle's Point of View/I woke up earlier than Sean to roam around the place. I went outside barefoot and looked at the ocean through the shore. This place is heaven. I can't believe I'm actually experiencing going to a place like this.Thank goodness the staff lend me a shawl to cover my skin. I'm still wearing my nightgown since the extra shirts here are not yet dried.I let the cold breeze of air touch my skin and sighed. I can't believe I am actually married.Am I dreaming?Of course not."Good morning, beautiful. Why did you wake up so early?" I heard a voice from behind.I didn't look back because I knew the voice was from Sean. After a while, I felt his arms being wrapped around me."Hey, what are you doing?" I asked him in shock."Hugging you, obviously?" he replied in his deep, morning voice.I just sighed. I looked at the ocean and inhaled heavily."Do you like it here?" S
/Myrtle's Point of View/Where am I?Did I pass out?I slowly opened my eyes and looked around the area.I'm inside a clinic and still wearing my wedding gown. What happened?A nurse came in, and I immediately asked her what was happening. She told me I had lost consciousness in the bathroom, and Sean brought me here.I messed up again.I can't believe the wedding was ruined because of me."Myrtle." Sean walked towards me and immediately hugged me. "Are you okay?" he asked.
/Myrtle's Point of View/Today is the day.A day that most people await.Today is my wedding.Bells, bells, bells.Flowers and roses everywhere. As I stepped inside the venue, all eyes were on me, as if they were really anticipating the bride of the billionaire. The place was just so magnificent. The decorations were full of white cloth and gold ornaments everywhere! Even if I expected something like this, I'm still surprised.Even if this wedding is so elegant, I don't feel love.I didn't feel anyt
/Myrtle's Point of View/And we're back at the city.My family came with us since they were invited to my wedding anyway.I wonder what Sean's parents' reaction be. Are they also lovely people?Sean said my family and his family are very different, but I believe they're still good people."Let's go buy the rings today," Sean muttered while looking at himself at the mirror, putting on his brown trench coat.Oh, yeah. I realized he didn't even propose to me.He proposed but not in the usual way where the man will kneel down and suddenly pull a ring from his pocket in front of the lady he loves.
/Myrtle's Point of View/ We spent the night in our tiny abode. I wonder if Sean even slept well because I know he is not used to this setting. He slept on the wooden bench while my siblings, Papa, and I snuggled in the bed. The roosters' cock-a-doodle-doos woke me up. "Good morning, papa," I greeted Papa while brewing coffee. The aroma smelled so lovely. "Good morning, Myrtle," Papa said back. I glanced at my siblings, who were still cutely sleeping while their legs were tangled up with each other. I also glanced at Sean, but he was not at the bench. "Where's Sean?" I asked Papa. "Oh, he
/ Myrtle's Point of View /"Could you stop being such a brat?!" I yelled at Sean while he was driving our way to the province. He was teasing me while I was literally overthinking about my family."What are you so scared about? It's not like you're too young to get married. I am twenty, and you are nineteen. After all, this marriage is just a deal, right?""I know, but I couldn't help but think of my family's reaction. They will definitely get mad at me," I spoke like a literal child."I'm here with you, Myrtle. Don't worry about it," Sean assured me. I don't know, but I feel comforted every time he tells me not to worry about anything. His words are like coffee that soothes my soul."The we
