“Good morning sleepyhead” Kara greeted me as I walked into the ER prior to my morning shift while I yawned. “Had a rough night”? She asked.
“Just, some trouble sleeping” I shrugged. She narrowed her gaze and eyed me suspiciously before leaving to get settled. In our duty, it was almost impossible to not be able to fall asleep. We are usually so exhausted that we barely have any time to do anything else. We had rotation every other month, and the first few days were invested in training.
“Interns” A call from the station distracted us, and without even changing I hung my apron hurriedly and ran to respond. “I am Dr. Naya Winter. I'm on call on tuesday. I’m a general Surgeon. You are starting this week"? She asked them. Both the interns nodded at their mentor. “Introduce yourselves” She ordered.
“I am Kara Louis”
“I am Chance Lopez”
“Kara and Chance, got it.” She nodded. “Anything minor, you call either of them” She directed towards the first and second year residents from her department who were also on call here with her for the day. “Anything major that needs immediate major surgical intervention, call me” She instructed and left them all by themselves.
“Let’s get started,” Chance sighed. Since they were still on training, they had a few days of day duty before a full 24 hour shift. They needed to learn every skill that was useful from day 1. It’s only been two months since their internship began, so they were quite new to this whole thing, and not just the ER department.
After a morning shift of relatively fewer patients, most of them with minor to moderate injuries which needed dressing and a tetanus shot, Kara and Chance decided to take a break. Not that they had to do much, since they were still in the process of learning, but it was still exhausting as hell. Since their practical load was less, all the talking was left to the two of them. In between the conversation, Kara decided to bring up the evening of the day before. “How did it go with Dr. Tyrant yesterday”?
Chance who had just engulfed a giant gulp of water spat it out. Luckily it landed on the ground and not on someone esle's face or body. “What do you... mean”? Chacne mumbled between his coughs.
“He called you right”? Kara frowned. "He said he wanted to meet you" She tried to jog up his memory.
“Just…. wanted to give me some files on the cases I worked on,” Chance shrugged.
“I worked there with you too, why didn’t I get anything”? Kara raised her brows followed by a suspicious frown.
“You actually did. He gave me yours as well since we are partners.” Chance informed her.
“Fair enough. But you know that I can tell you are hiding something, right”? Kara, putting down her sandwich, looked directly at Chance. “I have known you since high school, there is no way you would almost mess up i.v and i.m just like that, especially with Tramadol. I know we are just getting started but no matter how sleep deprived you are, you never do anything this silly. What's going on?” She asked again.
Chance took a moment to consider, “Fine, I’ll tell you, just promise me you won’t judge me”?
“Yeah, I am not making any promises” Kara shook her head. She knew her friend well enough and how much stupid stuff he is capable off. “Come on, just tell me already” She groaned. Chance took a final deep breath and explained how things went down earlier the day before, “Who knew you can trade sex favours” She teased her friend while laughing out loud.
“I didn't think he would agree”! Chance whined as well. “I was just trying to mess with him. Like he did with me in the last month. I honestly expected him to have an outburst and storm out or something”.
“Well, if you don’t want to do it, you can always back out,” Kara shrugged. “You are not the one who has to go through with it” she reminded him.
“I know that, but I don’t wanna lose face.” Chance huffed "I already have lost enough in the past month". he groaned. "Kara what am I gonna do?"
“Then get on with it. You haven’t got laid since you broke with Jess anyways” Kara shrugged. “That was like what, 2 years ago”?
“I haven’t been in a relationship since her, who said I didn’t get laid” Chance pouted.
“Did ya”? Kara challenged, raising an eyebrow.
After a brief pause, Chance mumbled, “No”
“Look, with our current lack of time it’s not possible to be in a relationship. Jess broke up with you during our finals specifically for that reason. This way you get to have no relationship, and get laid. Just take it as a win” Kara shrugged.
“I guess” Chance groaned. It was easier said than done anyways. Suddenly he received an alert in his phone, [RTA, report ASAP] (A/N: RTA- Road Traffic Accident)
Both Chance and Kara ran towards the ER and found an unconscious kid on the bed who had multiple bruises, and with parents who had worse bruises than him. “We, we didn’t see the truck” the man, assuming it was his father, gasped. “He passed out, and didn’t wake up”.
“Did he hit his head”? Chance asked the man.
“I dunno, he was in the back. We were….” He struggled to speak.
“We got this” Chance nodded and asked one of the nurses to page Dr. Winter. “Get an MRI of the head,” he asked another nurse.
“You ordered an MRI? History of head injury?” Dr. Winter asked as soon as she arrived.
“They don’t know, but it appears likely,” Chance answered. Dr. Winter examined the boy as thoroughly as she could. The kid’s vitals were stable, so things were under control… for now. “Call OS” Dr. Winter asked.
“What”? Chance deadpanned.
“He dislocated his shoulder, we need to fix it.” She explained after taking a proper look at his shoulder joint. “Don’t send interns” She asked before chance could dial one of his friends. The only other person whom he had on number was Dr. Tyson. Reluctantly, he dialed.
“What”? In a Casual way he answered.
“There is a kid with a shoulder dislocation, Dr. Winter asked me to call OS” Chance answered. “No interns” He added as to justify calling him directly.
“Is it anterior”? Dr. Tyson asked.
“What”?
“The dislocation” Dr. Tyson snapped. Usually Chance wasn’t this disoriented, but somehow his anxiousness was about to take over him. He hated that.
“We don’t know for sure,” Chance answered honestly.
“Get an X-ray done. I’ll be done here soon then I will head out there.” And Dr. Tyson hung up after that.
The X-Ray reports arrived before Dr. Tyson did. Chance tried his best to interpret it, given his experience of the last month in the department. But he knew it felt different. This X-Ray wasn’t like the ones he witnessed. Upon Dr. Tyson’s arrival the first thing he asked Chance after looking at the X-ray was, “Does the Kid have seizures”?
“I dunno,” Chance admitted honestly.
“What do you know”?! Dr. Tyson snapped at him, just like he used to back in his department. “You are an intern, go get the necessary information”! He huffed. Chance biting his inner lip went to talk to the parent’s of the kids. The whole way he kept cursing Dr. Tyrant in his head. His shift in emergency had been hectic enough without Dr.Tyrant's traumatic yelling.
Kara and Dr. Winter arrived right at that moment, “Can’t you fix it”? He asked Dr. Tyson.
“It’s a posterior dislocation. There is a chance this kid has seizures” Dr. Tyson informed her.
“That could explain why he is unconscious,” She pondered. “His MRI is clean anyways”.
“Yes!! He has seizures. He is a diagnosed epileptic for the past year” Chance came running and informed everyone whilst trying to catch his breath. “And here is the list of his medications” He handed them an old prescription. Chance was a bit pissed at the parents for not informing earlier, but they are scared for their son, so it was understandable as to why they missed out.
Turns out the kid passed out after having a seizure. It wasn’t uncommon, but due to the accident the parents couldn't help but panic. Taking advantage of his unconsciousness his shoulder was fixed by Dr. Tyson who was assisted by Chance due to his experience. The kid woke up an hour after his admission. By the time he gained proper consciousness, it was found that he couldn't even recall the accident happening, suggesting that his seizure took place before the accident.
His parents were treated and the kid was referred to the neuro department. Before, Dr. Tyson left and approached Chance from the back and mumbled, “So, the deal is still on”?
Pressing his tongue against cheek, Chance recalled the outburst a moment ago. “YEPP” He huffed. “I’ll see you tonight” Chance gave him a sarcastic smile before he was called away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After a long 12 hour shift, Chance could barely feel his muscles. So much running around, so many emergency cases… he was drained on his very first day. Why? Why did he have to choose medicine of all people? Right, he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. He was about to doze off when he heard a beep on his phone. [When and Where?] From Dr. Tyrant. Yes, that’s how he had saved his number.
He was about to cancel, but instead he invited him to a bar. After freshening up and a two cups of strong coffee he headed out. At the bar, after looking around he finally spotted the guy he was looking for sitting while laughing with the bartender. ‘This guy can smile?’ Chance found himself wondering.
Without his signature glasses and his hair pulled nice, Chance had to admit, Dr. Tyson looked hot. “You dressed up,” Chance commented as he took the seat next to him. All he wore was a sweatshirt and a pair of Jeans.
“And you didn’t” He snorted. “Are you even up for it?” Dr. Tyson teased.
“Of course,” Chance replied with confidence. “If you had a hectic day like me you would understand” he shook his head.
“You do realise I too used to be an intern once right”? Dr. Tyson reminded him.
“Is that why you were so hard on me? Cause your residents were hard on you?” asked Chance.
“No”.
Chance waited for Terence to explain himself but he didn’t. "Besides, who cares what we're wearing. We should be taking our clothes off" Chance smirked.
"In here?" Dr. Tyson mused at Chance’s courage.
"I got us a room upstairs," Chance smirked. "Thanks to my buddy Barry here" he nudged his head towards the bartender. “I am not trusting you with my address” Chance tilted his head in response to which he received a seductive smirk. "Let's go".
Chance led Dr. Tyson to his room and even though he appeared confident, he was spiraling. He has had one night stands before, but those were the times he was drunk. Chance did consider getting drunk first, but considering how much he trusted Dr. Tyson (none By the way) decided it was better to stay on alert.
As soon as they entered the room Terence snuck incredibly close to Chance and whispered seductively, “Now what”?
Chance pushing aside all his thoughts slammed his lips on Terence while slamming both of them on the door. They made out for a while and Chance definitely didn’t miss the momentarily smirk on Terence’s lips. The kiss tasted like the wine that Terrence was drinking earlier and while that was not enough for getting him drunk, the kiss definitely felt intoxicating. Chance couldn't stop himself even if he tried.
“You are a kisser” Dr. Tyson commented when they finally pulled away to catch their breaths.
“Yeah.. how can one have sex without kissing?” Chance scoffed to which Dr. Tyson simply raised his eyebrows.
“That was good, let’s see how far you can go” Dr. Tyson smirked.
“Challenge accepted, Dr. Tyson” Chance smirked back.
Dr. Tyson cringed as soon as he heard that, “We are not at hospital. Feel free to call me Terrence”
“Terrence it is” a devious smirk crept up on Chance’s face until Terrence dragged him to the bed.
Day 2 "Someone looks happy" Terence's senior, Dr. McGrath smirked. "I got laid," Dr. Tyson declared with a prideful smirk. "About time" his senior cheered. "So, you're back to dating, huh?" Dr. McGrath teased. "No, I'm keeping it casual. I'm not ready for a relationship. Not yet". Shrugged Dr. Tyson. "I suppose that's fair." Dr. McGrath nodded. "So, how did you meet this guy?". "I met him in a bar" Dr. Tyson Shrugged. "Since when do you go to bars?" Dr. McGrath tilted his head and asked. "Well, I figured why not," Dr Tyson shrugged.
The next morning, Chance found himself waking up in the lavish apartment that belonged to the one and only Dr. Tyson (which, by the way, Chance still couldn't believe). As he stared at his surroundings, he noticed it was almost afternoon, and that this was the longest he had slept ever since his internship started. Chance couldn’t sleep comfortably or for long in the places that were unknown to him, which is why he would stay awake the entire night in the night shifts, but somehow in the mix of soft mattress and being incredibly tired, he slept quite peacefully. Still, Chance woke up before Dr. Tyson, who was sleeping soundly letting out soft snores. Apart from being asleep, almost the entire body of Dr. Tyson was sprawled over Chance, making it difficult for Chance to move without waking the other
“Someone is in a good mood” Kara commented as she noticed the glee on Chance’s face as he walked in for his morning shift. Chance, looking refreshed, for the morning shift, was indeed a rarity. "Yeah I slept well," Chance replied. "No… this is different" Kara pried. "I've known you for far too long, good sleep is not your cue. The glow you have is like…" She tried very hard to think. "Ahh… you had sex". "Of course I did. You know about my deal with Dr. T" Chance rolled his eyes. "Yes, but so far you've been miserable. But you seemed to have enjoyed it this time. I wonder what changed"? Kara smirked. "You really want explicit details of my sex life"? Chance asked with a sly smirk.
When Chance finally opened his eyes, he noticed he was lying on the floor, mostly naked with a shirt or something covering his private areas. There were two things he could tell immediately. He was uncomfortable as hell with body aches all over from sleeping on the floor, and that it was way too early in the morning. He remembered last night offering the bed, yet again, but Terrence claimed to be too tired, so he simply offered Dr. T the couch while he slept on the floor. Yes, after going on about four to five rounds, he was that tired. But now that he woke up groggy and uncomfortable, all he really wanted was to sleep in bed. This was one of those days where he didn’t have to dread his alarm going off as it was his day off in the ER department. He headed back to the bedroom, and collapsed right on
"Kara?" Chance was shocked to see his best friend at his doorstep. Mainly because Kara usually avoided coming to Chance's house because it was quite far from the hub, citing that returning from this area has always been a hustle. Which is why her presence at this hour was surprising. "What a… surprise" he tried to hide his shock. "Yeah, yeah, whatever. I need your help". She groaned. "And you dressed up for that"? Chance teased to receive a glare from Kara. "I had a date," She spat. "It blew up, and now I am stuck here without my car". She sighed, almost at her edge. "You… date"? Chance tried to appear shocked. "Yes, Chance Lopez, I date. Despite my out of the world beauty, I do give p
“Whoa? What did the Table ever do to you”? Dr. McGrath asked as he noticed his junior almost dig a hole with an instrument kept on the table. Dr. Tyson blinked and noticed how much he had scraped the table. He looked at his senior apologetically and with puzzled eyes, evoking concern in the former, “Are you alright?” He sat down next to Dr. Tyson. “I haven’t seen you do this for over a month. Is he… back”? Dr. Tyson asked. “No”! Dr. Tyson denied immediately. “It’s not that.” “Well, if you wanna share, I am here.” Dr. McGrath asked. After an uncomfortable pause, Dr. Tysos asked, “If I tell you, promise me that you won't judge me?” “When have I ever judged you”. With Pride, Dr. McGrath declared.
Dr. Tyson froze the moment he noticed Chance. The audacity he must have had to try the look, and pull it off splendidly. It was hard for Dr. Tyson to look at Chance at the moment, but it was even harder to look away. Seeing his jaw dropped like that, Dr. McGrath followed his gaze to see Chance dancing around to music. "Yeah, in this weather I didn't expect him to go to Tarzan either. He has a high heat tolerance or something." Dr. McGrath shrugged. "He is practically naked." Dr. Tyson pointed out with a gulp. "And here I thought there were no strippers." And with that Dr. Tyson turned around to get his gun. "He is not a stripper"! Dr. McGrath shouted before he headed back to warn Chance about the incoming strippers jokes he mig
Sure there had been plenty of times, Dr. Tyson rode him like anything, but this was the first time it seemed as if there was a bullet to his head if Chance didn’t comply. It was like getting mauled by an insatiable beast, except this one Chance didn’t mind. Chance finally got comfortable enough in the cooped up backseat. When Dr. Tyson pulled away after leaving a string of marks on his chest, he smirked. “Looks like you can’t pull off this look anymore.” “Or course I can. I look like a Tarzan that scores,'' Chance winked and tugged on the Doctor's bow tie once more. “Why the hell do you put this thing? It’s irritating to take it off.” “Had I known this would happen, I wouldn’t have worn it.” Dr. Tyson scoffed and in a swift motion removed the bow tie and threw it near the glove compartment. In that sa
The next day Chance and Kara both were on time, and yet they were swamped with so much work that they barely got some time to breathe. From running around from here and there, to tending to a lot of patients, which was more than they had seen. It was a bit messy and tiring.“Damn, it’s so exhausting.” in their tiny lunch break, Kara groaned.“Yeah, but it’s also nice.” Chance shrugged.Kara stared at Chance with a deadpan look, as if Chance had gone crazy or something. When Chance didn’t continue, Kara added, “Please tell me you were being sarcastic.”“What?” Chance blinked. “No, I wasn’t. I mean, it was kind of fun.” Chance shrugged. "We got to learn so much".“You have lost your mind. Finally you are facing the repercussions of sleeping with Dr. Tyson.” Kara shook her head.“This has nothing to do with him.” Chance ro
“So, when are you leaving?” Terrence asked.“In a while.” Chance declared. “After this meal probably.”“Do you have any plans?” Terrence asked.“I was gonna go… shop for some stuff. After which I’ll probably head home.” Chance nodded. “Why? You wanna come with me?” he teased.“Can I?” Terrence asked, taking Chance up by surprise.“You… want to?” Chance was surprised. “Don’t you have a shift tomorrow?”“So do you.” Terrence shrugged. “I am not talking about sex. I am talking about shopping. I need to buy some stuff as well. I
Chance had two more days to cover in the peds, one of which was only clinic duty. Meanwhile, after two days Terrence was reinstated as well. Things were starting to fall back in place for both of them, with Chance starting his rotation in general surgery, while Terrence was getting acquainted with his work schedule.“I see you are back.” Dr. McGrath was the first one to greet him. Having had the night shift, he was the only one who was here at this hour. “So, what did you do on your holiday?”“It wasn’t a holiday. It was a suspension.” Terrence scoffed, shaking his head.“You get to take days off, and you get paid.” Dr. McGrath pointed out. “Tell me you at least enjoyed these days.”“I di
Even though the growl of stomach came from Chance, Terrence acknowledged the fact that he was hungry as well. Without further ado, he decided to order some takeout and as a late celebration Terrence dug into the cake. Even though it was a day later, it was still his birthday cake. It had been ages since he got one. He mostly avoided his friends on his birthday and only got texts from his family. As for his last boyfriend, they gave him gifts, but never once did he arrange a cake.Once they were done with lunch and dessert. Terrence decided to check up on some of his patients that he had admitted and whom he left under the supervision of Dr. McGrath. He called and discussed some of the possible modes of treatment in a patient with doubtful prognosis. Terrence was deeply immersed in his conversation with his colleague, that is until he felt something on his waist.
It was early morning when Chance finally had his time off from his shift. He was exhausted from the lack of sleep, possibly delirious, so much so that he was having second thoughts regarding driving. Ultimately he decided to call a cab and went home. Once he reached his apartment, he noticed Terrence was still there passed out in his bed. Of all the things he had expected to walk into when he came in, that was not it.He checked all the other rooms to ensure that Terrence hadn't got drunk and messed around again. Luckily everything seemed in its place which caused a sigh of relief to come out of Chance. He was entertained by the fact that he was worried about making a mess by a literal clean freak. Without pondering much, he laid down next to Terrence on the bed and drifted off to sleep almost immediately.He woke up to the scent of hot milk
For some reason Terrence was not satisfied with one round, and they went around several times causing him to be late at the office. He was literally running in the hallway which could give the false impression that there was an emergency case he needed to attend to and not that he was late. When he reached he received a quick scolding from his seniors before Kara got to him.“What happened to you? Where did you run off last night? No matter what, I couldn't get a hold of you.” She seemed pissed.“Sorry, my phone was out of power.” Chance shrugged.“How? You barely use it here.”“It’s broken. I really got to get a new one.” Chance sighed. “Which reminds me, why did you call?”
Few moments later, Terrence pulled away, and looked at Chance who looked at Terrence with a puzzled expression. “What was that for?” he asked.“Placebo.” Terrence smirked. Chance frowned, until it hit him.They went around a few more times in the ferris wheel before they were done for the ride. For some reason after that sudden kiss, Chance was more composed of himself for the rest of the ride.While Terrence was alright with not riding on the roller coaster, upon isisting by Chance a lot, he agreed. Chance was still terrified of this one, but since he could overcome his fear of the ferris wheel, he actually had a little bit of fun. He wanted to try roller coasters as well.Only he wished he didn’t when they were etting out. He could b
Terrence woke up in his own bed with a terrible hangover looming over his head. “Good morning.” a sweet and painfully loud voice startled him. “Just to make it clear, we did not have sex last night.” Chance declared.“Why are you here?” Terrence asked, in a whisper.“I made you some hangover soup.” Chance smiled. “How much do you remember?”“I remember being suspended, being kicked off the seminar team. I remember going to The Tropical Rise and drinking…a lot.” Terrence nodded. “Oh, and I kissed someone.”“I hope you are talking about me.” Chance declared firmly.
It took the hospital a few more days to go back to its normal routine, where most of the casualties of the disasters were discharged. Only a few who had grave injuries were needed to be kept in the hospital. One of those patients was under Terrence, and thus he made sure he kept a watch on them on a regular basis.After his rounds he came back to the residents suite, where he found Dr. McGrath going over his case files. “Is that of my patient?” he couldn’t help but ask Dr. McGrath.“Yes, he was one of the patients you operated on.” Dr. McGrath nodded. “It says you worked with Dr. Winter on this one?” he asked.“I did?” Terrence was confused and thus checked the file thoroughly, “oh yeah, it’s the one
