Chapter: CHAPTER THIRTY: A VISIT TO THE PASTThe old abandoned warehouse stood, corner lot, like a looming gargoyle; perched on a mound of earth protruding like an overfilled grave. The place looked dilapidated and haunted. For a moment, Kevin looked over the warehouse T-Murek had used to torture Loretta over a year ago. It felt like he was revisiting his horrible past by coming back to this very place. For months, he’d tried to fight off the memories of the past, and now he’s back to the place where it all began, the very building where he sat to watch his fiancée die. He has returned to the one place he’d hoped he would never have to see again. As he climbed up the old broken staircase, Alex heeled him. And when he reached the wooded door, the memories of the past flooded his mind, filling him with great horror. It was almost twenty-four hours after T-Murek had left the room, leaving Kevin tied to the chair. Kevin watched with pain in his eyes as flies buzzed around the opened wounds on Loretta’s lifeless body. His face was

Chapter: CHAPTER TWENTY NINE: DISCOVERED Derik drove into a large conference room beside the police department. He took out his phone to confirm it was the address that William had texted him. Then he got out of his car and walked past the security guards standing outside into the hall. There, he met a large crowd. He marvelled at how big the whole place was. Frank, head of the forensic laboratory, was there. The entire police force in the city was present. And so was Scott. They were all seated in an orderly arrangement. Looking up at the podium, he saw William addressing the crowd. And next to him was TCU’s new president, Sir Lawrence Linus. Beside Lawrence sat a muscular, dark-skinned soldier wearing dark glasses. He had a flagitious look as he stared towards the crowd from his dark shades. He had an M16A1 gun strapped to his left shoulder and was chewing a gun. Derik walked through the attentive crowd, up the front row as he searched for an empty seat. William’s voice became audible as he reeled towards the front. “—

Chapter: CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT: SOME THINGS CAN NEVER BEDerik gulped air to steady himself. Straightening his arm at Kevin, he wrapped his fingers around the gun, not taking his eyes off him. “Give me one reason I shouldn’t drop you where you stand.” “Derik, wait!” he hollered, hands raised a bit higher. “I’m not your enemy. I may be one of them, but I’m certainly not a killer.” Derik glared, his fierce eyes filled with rage and hatred. “You pinned a rod through a man’s eyes, how do you explain that?” “Those guys deserved what they got and you know it. Heck, they raped Natasha and walked away free, while she suffers in the hospital. I couldn’t live with that.” “You could have just left it to the authorities.” “I was just doing the cops a favour.” “That doesn’t change the fact that you’re a shifter and a killer. You’re dangerous. You shouldn’t be around Natasha,” he countered. Kevin remained silent. “Does Natasha know? Does she know what you are?” he asked him, his fingers tightening around the gun. “She doesn’t have to know.” His

Chapter: CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN: FAMILY REUNION Landry drove through the large gate into William’s mansion. He stopped in front of a Nissan Terrano II which was parked inside the carport alongside the large apartment. Kevin got out first, then offered to help Natasha. “Thank you. I can get off on my own.” She turned him down rather impolitely. He was taken a little aback by her abruptness. Getting down from the car, she bolted past him, climbing up the mini-stairs on the facade of the large bungalow. She knocked and stood with her arms folded while waiting behind the door. She didn’t turn to look at him. Landry noticed the tension between them but kept silent, making a mental note to talk to Kevin about it later. “Dad! Damien!” Natasha called and stepped back a few paces after knocking. A moment passed and no answer. She climbed up the stairs to hit the door again, this time a little louder than before. “Is anyone home?” She shuffled backward and waited, folding her arms and avoiding Kevin’s gaze. When it appeared no one was c

Chapter: CHAPTER TWENTY SIX: DON'T DO THAT TO ME AGAINWilliam went through the files Frank dropped on his desk. “I don’t understand,” he grunted with frustration. “These are the names of every member and officer on this taskforce. But why are there green dots placed beside each name?” “This is the full list of active officers registered in this taskforce that has been tested. The green dot represents the members that came out clean, while the red represents the shifters,” Frank explained. William stole a quick glance at the list, a line between his brows. “But I see no name here attached to a red dot.” “Exactly my point, sir. Every official and officer working in this taskforce came out clean.” William looked over the file, feeling sceptical about its credibility. “I ran a double check on everyone just to be sure. I can assure you, sir, there are no shifters on the task force.” William was silent for a moment, a series of thoughts running through his head. “I was thinking, what if we recreated another shifter just like Mrs Eulich, o

Chapter: EPILOGUEDerik walked out of the hospital. Full of smiles as he edged towards his car. For the first time he felt like he had done something worth it.“Things are going to differ from here on out.”When he had entered his car, he plugged the keyhole to start the engine, but then his phone started ringing. He looked over it to check the caller ID. Chapter: CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE: DELIGHTFUL PAIN She felt something hard and smooth press against her chest. Suddenly, what felt like a thousand volts raced through her, forcing her back to reality. Gasping, she was back in the same room, lying prostrate on a table with her chest bathed in blood. She met T-Murek’s gaze. “You can’t die just yet, not until I’m fully satisfied,” he reminded her.T-Murek dropped the defibrillators gently onto the table, turning to Kevin with a condescending smile. He searched his face for any sign of revulsion, but found none—just a blank stare.T-Murek took a glove from his bag pack and put it on. Then he pushed his fingers through Natasha’s chest. He felt her heartbeat intensify. She uttered a shrill cry at the intense pain. Thereafter, her face remained frozen, her eyes wide and wild. She felt his finger diving in deeper. More blood spilled on her chest.Kevin sat on the chair, watching with bloods

Chapter: CHAPTER THIRTY: HAPPY DEATHDAYNatasha was fast asleep as she stood erect, hands tied behind the pole. T-Murek trudged towards her. He couldn’t contain his excitement. And reaching her, he threw his fist to her face, and it collided with her nose. Natasha came awake with a sharp cry. Her eyes were dark, cupped by fleshy pouches and radiating fear. Her lips appeared swollen, and blood dripped from her nose. She looked up at T-Murek with dread. Her entire body quivered at the mere sight of him. Natasha noticed she was standing naked before him and moved her hands to cover her nakedness, but found that they were tied behind the pole. Sweat broke on her brows as she struggled with all her might, letting out scared whimpers. But the rope would not give. Her wrists were hurting from the struggle. Closing in on her, T-Murek cupped her jaw and spoke to her face. “I’m not going to lie, this is going to be a really bad day for you, sweetheart.” His playful tone concealed a lethal truth. Nata

Chapter: CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE: DARK STAIN OF BLOODLawrence’s escape from custody was something Derik had seen coming. He received the news of the incident with dismay and drove down to the scene to see for himself the extent of the damage. When he arrived, he found that the road had been completely sealed off by the police officers that were on ground. They were wrapping the bodies in plastic bags. Derik gawked at the number of corpses that were aligned on the road. An intense feeling of revulsion grew within him. They lay like slaughtered animals in a waste of blood. Every officer in that vehicle had been butchered like animals. None was spared.Seeing them that way bothered him. He needed to find wherever they’d taken Natasha, lest she ends up this way. Time was running out, and he was getting really desperate. He couldn’t imagine how he’d react if Natasha’s body turned up like these. An uncanny feeling spread throughout his body at the thought that he would be too late by the time she was

Chapter: CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT: A NEATLY FOLDED LETTEREarly the next morning, the sun set high in the sky to mark the dawn of a new day. Derik hesitated for a moment before entering the TCU building. His eyes were caught by the calendar that hung in the hallway, and his shoulder shrugged.“It’s April 26th at last,” he muttered with dread. He never could have imagined this day would cause him so much fear.As he walked down the hallway, he avoided being spotted by any of the officers already present in the building. And reaching William’s office, he plugged the keyhole with the keys he had stolen. The lock clicked, and the door opened. Standing at the doorway, he peered into William’s office. Finally, he found what he was looking for.Quickly reaching for William’s drawers, he pulled the first arm over and took out the keys to Lawrence’s office. Then he snuck out of William’s office with great stealth, pressing his back against the wall as he moved to Lawrence’s

Chapter: CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN: A SHADOW IN THE DARK“Sir, there was a reported case of a loose beast running around the city,” Frank said as he walked into William’s office with a file in his hand. “Two women have been confirmed dead already. Their bodies were found on the street, torn to shreds.”William shot a glance at him. “Your lab rat that escaped recently?”“Possibly…” “We must terminate him before he harms civilians any more civilians.”“That will be a bit of a problem, sir.” He looked at him, shrugging his shoulder. “During the genetic transmutation process which we performed on Mr Shade, we altered his genetic makeup in such a way that would make him hyperactive and incredibly strong. This means Mr Shade is nearly impossible to destroy.”“You should have thought of that before you created him,” William muttered. “You made him, so figure out
