Chapter: TWENTY-FIVEI gave a heavy sigh as I turned to leave the prison yard which had been my abode for five days. My trial had been the day before and just as my father had promised, I was pronounced innocent. It was moments like this that I was most grateful to have an Illustrious and eminent person for a father. However, I hadn't done anything wrong so being imprisoned for a crime I didn't commit would be an infringement on my rights. Nevertheless, I was joyous to be out of prison. It was refreshing to see the broad daylight again after my being in an enclosed area. My family had insisted that I came along with them after the court proceedings but I had refused for some reasons which I couldn't pinpoint. I guess I didn't like the way I looked and so wouldn't want my kids to see me this way. I took a last glance at the prison gate and made a vow never to step my feet there again. The road was busy as usual a

Chapter: TWENTY-FOURI grabbed my phone to call the number he used in calling me when I saw him coming; dragging my son haphazardly. My son looked dirty and tattered and there was an injury on his head. My heart broke as I stared at my son."Daddy!" My son whimpered as he struggled to free himself from Tony's grip."Well! Well!! Well!!! Look who's here. The Almighty Daniel." He laughed. He was much older with an unkempt beard and hair. He looked so shaggy, so unlike the Tony who liked to be fresh. There was an ugly scar on his face and wondered where he got such scar from."You haven't changed at all. You look good. You don de count money, don de chop money de enjoy yourself, sheybi?" He laughed and I ignored him."Where is Veronica? Still hiding under your shell?""She's in the car. She's pregnant and can't climb all the way here." I coldly replied."Mmmm. So are you suggesting we go down t

Chapter: TWENTY-THREEI sat in my office when I received a call. It was from Veronica. I had grown lean due to the stress Tony was pouring on me. He was so smart to confiscate any sim card he used in calling me. This way, it was difficult for the police to track him down and no one knew his whereabouts. I picked my phone up and placed it on my ear."Daniel!" Veronica's voice was haunted and I stiffened immediately."What is it?" I asked."Somto. . .Somto. . .""What happened to Somto? What happened to my son?""Somto has been kidnapped." She wailed. My hands began to shake and I struggled to keep my phone in place. "How did this happen? Where are the guards? How could they allow such a thing to happen?""He was kidnapped before they came to pick him up. Jonathan said that they were sitting in front of the classroom waiting for the guards to come. Somto i

Chapter: TWENTY-TWOTEN YEARS LATER★ ★ ★Veronica bent low and blew the candles on her gigantic cake. It was her thirtieth birthday and we decided to throw a surprise party for her. It had been seven years since we got married. After all the chaos and troubles Tony costs us, we still ended up together. It was nice to complete our schooling without Tony hovering all over us. Tony was sentenced to fourteen years imprisonment for attempted rape. As I watched Tony walk into the police's van with some policemen holding him, I felt like a huge burden had been lifted off my shoulders. Tony was out of our lives forever. I could finally breathe clean air. Chineye also was out. She left the city after we graduated to live with her mother. It felt so good to live a life free of Tony and Chineye. However, I didn't graduate as the best student; Tunde did and I was genuinely happy for him. With all that had happened

Chapter: TWENTY-ONEIt had been quite some days since I saw Veronica for It was my test week and I was occupied with so much reading and group study. I had a lot to catch up with for I was seriously lagging; a lot had happened this semester. I had missed Veronica so much and I couldn't wait for Friday for that was the end of my numerous tests. The dinner we had with my family had gone perfectly fine. Veronica had been nervous and scared thinking my parents wouldn't approve of her but like I told her earlier, my mum fell in love with her instantly and the two of them moved about like best friends who hadn't seen each other in a while. My dad too was good to her and this made my heart glow.I returned to my room after the two tests we had that Friday morning. Since I had a lot to cover, I had skipped eating and bathing to have enough time to read. For this reason, I returned immediately to my apartment to bathe and eat. After showe

Chapter: TWENTYIt had been three days since my fight with Tony and I sat in my room, staring at my textbook. Veronica left that day for she had classes in the morning. I had not seen Tony and I was grateful for that. Fortunately, Tony hadn't pressed any charges against me.After all that happened, I promised myself not to engage in such a thing again. Tony wasn't worth my attention, I told me. He had done more harm than good to me and so I sought to avoid him.My mum had called earlier to ensure I was okay. She was very happy that I had a girlfriend and she invited us for a dinner at home during the weekend. Veronica had been tensed ever since she heard the news. She felt my parents wouldn't like her; she was scared to go. I tried my best to calm her down by ensuring her that there was nothing to be worried about.I seriously was looking forward to the dinner for I wanted Veronica to get to know my mum. I knew my mother woul

Chapter: A Happy Ending? They were lying on their backs in each other's arms gazing at the dark sky which was decorated with beautiful stars and a half-moon. They had spread a mat on the grass and were lying quietly with a plate of fruit beside them. It had been Aiden's idea to do this. He had told Velvet that he wanted a quiet moment with her without anyone interfering and Velvet had suggested this. The Riverside was quiet; not a single soul could be seen except them. Aiden wanted it this way so he was not bothered. The quietness brought a soothing calmness to the couple and as they gazed at the sky, a smile settled on Aiden's face. Though Velvet could not see his face for she was lying sideways with her head on his chest, she felt him smile. "Why are you smiling?" She asked, amused. "I don't know," Aiden answered, now giggling. "Maybe I'm happy?" That brought a smile to Velvet's face and she turned to the side so she could look at his face. He was still smiling, his dimples appearing on both cheeks

Chapter: GoodbyeAiden froze, shock rushing down his spine like gushing water. For a moment, he was still, feeling nothing but numbness. But the numb feeling soon dissipated and an avalanche of emotion flooded in: Anger, pain, grief, pity and many more emotions he could not explain. He was angry at Alpha Lundamous for doing that to his father. He was pained that his father had to die that way; grieved because he didn't have a chance to grow up with his father; pity because he felt sorry for himself, his father, and his mother who were prey to Lundamous and his son.But he didn't express these emotions, rather he sat rigidly on the chair, looking at the wall,"Why are you just telling me this now?""What would you have done if I told you earlier?"That lone question broke the barricade that had besieged his emotion. He sparked."What sort of stupid question is that? I would have killed that motherfucking idiotic piece of shit with my bare hands. I wouldn't have allowed him die that way. I would have

Chapter: A Fucked-up CycleThey were sitting opposite each other, staring into each other's eyes as one waited for the other to speak. They were seated in the throne room, Elder Theodore sitting on one of the seats for the elders at the right-hand side while Aiden sat on the left, abandoning the throne. With this old man, he was not an alpha but a servant. This old man was the reason he was alive and every achievement of his was because this old man had saved him. So Aiden didn't want to sit on the throne and act as an alpha before him.Elder Theodore had changed so much. His hair was grey, not even a black strand could be seen. His face was wrinkled with folds crumpling and sagging his cheeks. His once fearful eyes were dull but piercing still, and his skin was pale, so pale and weak. His beard was whiter, fuller, and longer as though he belonged to the tribe of ancient India. The once slight stoop of his back was now more pronounced, making him look so short when he had been a tall man of 6'4. He had aged

Chapter: Mysterious Old ManAnd there he was, struggling to walk with the flowing white robe that seemed to drag as he walked. They finally arrived at the Great throne room and the guards that had escorted them began hitting the drum attached to the door to inform the council that the royalty was around. The council which consisted of the elder and the high-ranking deltas were already seated on their decorated stools made from silver with foams covered with silk. While the elders sat on the right side of the room, the deltas were seated on the left side.Following the beating of the drums, the council rose to their feet, their eyes on the door as they watched Aiden walk in with Alpha Velvet and the rest strolling behind.Despite his sour mood, Aiden could not help himself from marvelling at the beauty of the throne room as they walked slowly. The great throne room had been decorated with garlands of flowers and other decorations Aiden could not describe. He turned to Alpha Velvet and asked, "How did this all ha

Chapter: Coronation Aiden didn't sleep well. He kept tossing about the bed, rolling from one side to the other and waking up Alpha Velvet in the process. He was restless and the dreams he was having were not helping issues too. They were all about Calix and all the dreams reminded him of all the happy times he enjoyed with this man while growing up. In one of the dreams, he had been sitting with Calix playing a board game while Jamal and Andrew argued about who would win. This had happened about ten years ago when they were only teenagers and Calix had ended up winning. Another dream was about them all sharing a plate of food prepared by his mother and they all talked happily, laughing and playing with one another. These dreams were torturous and they made Aiden very restless. Finally, he jumped out of the bed to stand by the window, and there he remained till daybreak, just staring into space from their big window which enabled them to see ongoing events around the pack house. It had been a day since

Chapter: JudgementAlpha Velvet followed, her facial expression still stoic as she walked away without a glance back. Kunata followed finally, making sure to scoff aloud and jeer at them before leaving.Calix remained on the floor, watching them leave and walk away from his life forever. A lump had settled in his throat, such that it was difficult to swallow or even speak. All he could do was gape at them, his heart shattering with every step they took. Was this how it felt to be abandoned? Was this how it felt for people you loved to walk away from your life? So many questions were filling up his mind but before he could come up with answers, he felt himself being pulled to his feet and being dragged out, cold pair of hands holding onto him from both sides.Jared was being dragged too and his growls and threats resounded in the room. He was making empty threats, refusing to accept defeat when defeat was staring at him right in his face. Their downfall was so glaring. As they walked out of the dungeon

Chapter: Chapter 22: DefeatedRIOOwen's brown wolf had his ears pointed slightly forward and its forehead, neck hair and hackles were raised. Ivory teeth appeared between his jaws, his tongue moving around his mouth with saliva dripping from its lips. I wondered if it was trying to scare me but my wolf was not one to be intimidated. I was bigger than he was and more ferocious. We both swung our heads and with our bodies low in a crouch position, we began slinking slowly towards each other whilst keeping our eyes on each other. Owen's brown wolf immediately rushed forward to lunge at my left flank but my grey wolf was quick to dodge. As a result, we got involved in a confrontation and Owen thought he could defeat me by targeting my injured shoulder. But I knew his trick and after a moment of fighting hard, I finally got a chance to sink my sharp canine into his flesh. He growled in pain, his eyes on his freshly sustained wound just above his thigh. Before he could fully retract, I snapped at his head, pulling t

Chapter: Chapter 21: StrugglersRIO"Alpha Rio!" He screamed and somehow, his guttural scream seemed to affect my thinking faculty. I turned to look at him and this was when Owen got the chance to do what he had always wanted to do from the start. He stroked me on the shoulder and the sword blade cut through my skin. I groaned, inhaling sharply as pain spread through my body. I looked at Owen and found him smiling crookedly at me. The men were back to hailing and this fuelled Owen's ego. "I told you I'll kill you." He blurted out. Though in pain, I tried to smile at him. "Is this all you can do?" I chuckled and the smile fell off his face. To spite me, he pulled the sword out, making sure to pull some of my flesh with it. Unable to bear the pain silently, I let out a painful growl. Blood was trickling from the cut and the sight of my blood made me mad. I stared at my injured shoulder a little longer and when I looked up, all I could see was red. If I thought I had been angry before, then I thought wrong. Now, m

Chapter: Chapter 20: Asking for a FightRIOHowever, Owen stopped a foot away from us, his eyes fixed on Jake. He wouldn't come any closer. "Aren't you supposed to be training?" He asked loudly and Jake's head jerked up in surprise. "Owen." He said softly. "I asked you a question." Owen thundered this time and I rolled my eyes. He was being too dramatic. The men who had been talking happily stopped what they were doing to look at us. Since Owen was facing us, he could not see the scene he was making. "Training is yet to start. They are still welding the swords." "So what? Aren't you grown enough to join them? Rather you sit here with this. . ." He threw me a glance, then shook his head in irritation. "Eating apple. Since when did you become this lazy?" I was starting to get angry but I remained calm, chewing gently as I ate my apple. It would be better for everyone if I just ate my apple in peace. "You know I'm not lazy," Jake mumbled. "I'm only waiting for them to start our training. You just don't like that I'm sit

Chapter: Chapter 19: In an Enemy PackRIO It was the evening of that day and I was sitting under a large tree, watching the men joke around with one another. There were about ten of them and they talked at the top of their voices as they sharpened their swords. I could recognise three out of them as men I had beaten up back then when we fought.Though I had only beaten three up, all of them shot glares at me each time their eyes met with mine. It was clear that the men had recounted their encounter with me to the rest, such that they all considered me as their enemy. I had even overheard one of them ask why I was still there with them even after spending a full day. Funny enough, I didn't have an answer to that question. It was the same question I was asking myself even as I watched them. I had fully recovered so I had no reason to remain here. I should be on my way but the question was where exactly was I going? Was I ready to return to wandering in the forest like a wild homeless animal? If I was being honest, I wa

Chapter: Chapter 18: Visiting an Elf CampFRANCESCA Though I did not want to show it, I was really starting to get afraid by her words. I found myself wondering what we would do if we got attacked by these beastly creatures in the middle of the night. Ava was right, there was a first time for everything. When she saw that I was quiet, she began to bounce on her feet. "Come on, don't overthink it." "I'm not. It's a no. I'll pass." I tried to remain stubborn. I would not easily give in. "Come on, Francesca. I know you don't want to spend the rest of your day lying in your bedroom." "I won't. I must save a land. I won't just be wasting away on my bed." I said before I could think. I looked up quickly to gauge Ava's countenance but she did not seem to hear what I had just said. "Why don't you come to visit us today? Hm?" She was negotiating. "You can return home later. I can ascertain that your grandmother is not in at the moment. I'll make sure you get back before her arrival if that is what you are scared of. What do you

Chapter: Chapter 17: An Intruder in the CottageFRANCESCAThe sound was swift but I heard it. It was the steps of a person walking around the cottage and I sat up in bed, wondering who it was. I knew it was not Madam Creese or was it? It was too early for her to return from her long trip. That morning, she had dressed up in her black cloak and had told me to remain indoors while she went into town to see someone. Regardless of how much I asked, she would not give me the full details of her so-called journey, all she had been concerned about was that I remained indoors while she was away. That had made me so angry that I had burst out in anger, accusing her of caging me like a kid, but after my outburst, all she had done was shake her head at me like I was an unbearable child, then she said, "It is for your safety, my dear." "Why won't you let me come with you then? It's been many days since I got here and all I've seen is this ugly cottage. I want to come to town too. I want to see this world and the people in it!" I had tried
