A year later,
Evelyn took a deep breath and walked into the living room where Alaric was sitting, his eyes glued to his laptop. She could feel her temperature rising, as she had a fever, but she didn't want to go to the hospital alone. She cleared her throat softly, trying to get his attention. He barely glanced up before dismissing her with a wave of his hand.
"What do you want?" Alaric asked coldly, his eyes still fixed on the screen.
Evelyn bit her lip, "I feel feverish."
"And?" Alaric asked, emotionlessly
"I was hoping you could accompany me to the hospital." She answered
Alaric heaved a sigh without lifting his eyes from the screen, "I have a meeting to attend right now. Go with Bryan if you must."
Evelyn bit her lower lip, the tears pricking at the corner of her eyes. This was not the response she was hoping for. She wanted her husband's support and care during her fragile state. However, she knew that he despised her.
"Alaric, I want you to accompany me, not your secretary," Evelyn pleaded, her voice trembling.
Alaric finally looked up from the laptop, his cold ocean blue eyes harsh as he stared at her. "You should have thought of that before accepting this marriage. I am not supposed to be your babysitter."
Evelyn took a step back, her heart sinking. She knew he didn't love her, but she never knew he could be so cruel. She tried to fight back her tears and bravely looked at him.
Frustrated and heartbroken, she finally spoke up, "Alaric, why do you hate me so much? What have I done to deserve this treatment?"
Alaric looked at her coldly, "You know why. I never loved you, and I never will. This marriage was forced upon me, and I will never forgive you for taking away my freedom."
"Please, Alaric. I know you don't care for me, but I'm still your wife. Please, show this small decency and come with me to the hospital." Her voice sounded as if she could cry in any second
Alaric's expression softened for a second, but then he quickly regained his icy demeanor. "Fine, get ready but make it quick. I have important work to attend to."
Evelyn's eyes lit up with hope, but she didn't show it. She nodded and turned away, wiping away her tears before facing him again. "Thank you. I just... I appreciate it."
Alaric stood up from his desk and grabbed his coat, his body language conveying his indifference towards the whole situation. "I will be in the parking lot. You got 5 minutes to change. Don't waste any more of my time."
Evelyn nodded, holding back her tears and trying to control her emotions. She knew that this was probably the closest she would ever get to his affection. She silently prayed that someday, somehow, he would look at her with love and kindness instead of coldness and hatred.
After a few minutes,
Evelyn felt her heart race with anticipation as she walked towards the parking lot. She couldn't remember the last time Alaric had agreed to accompany her somewhere, and she was excited to spend the time with him.
As she approached the car, she saw Bryan Scott standing by Alaric's car, looking sharp in his suit. Her heart sank in disappointment as Bryan turned to look at her with a smile.
"Good morning, Mrs. Pritzker," Bryan said politely. "I'm afraid Mr. Pritzker had some unexpected work come up, so he won't be able to make it."
Evelyn's face fell with disappointment, but she tried not to let it show. "Oh, I see," she said, forcing a smile. "That's alright. Thank you for coming to pick me up, Bryan."
What did she expect anyway? She knew Alaric well.
"Please don't mention it." Bryan smiled, but the next moment his eyebrows furrowed in concen, "Your face is red, just how high is your fever?"
"It's nothing serious." Evelyn forced a smile
Realizing that Evelyn did not want to hold a conversation, Bryan nodded and opened the door for her, bowing slightly. "Please, let me help you in."
Evelyn climbed into the car and Bryan moved around to the driver's seat. As he started the engine, Evelyn found herself lost in thought, gazing out the window without really seeing anything.
Bryan didn't say anything, but he could tell something was weighing on Evelyn's mind. He felt a pang of sympathy for her – he knew how difficult it must be to be married to someone like Alaric. He had known Alaric for over seven years, and he had a pretty clear idea on Alaric and Evelyn's relationship.
As they drove to the hospital, Bryan kept his eyes on the road and his thoughts to himself. He didn't want to say anything that might make the situation worse.
Finally, they arrived at the hospital and Bryan pulled into a parking spot. As he got out of the car and opened the door for Evelyn, he stole a glance at her and saw the sadness in her eyes.
"Are you alright, Mrs. Pritzker?" he asked softly, noticing her flushed face
"I'm okay." Evelyn nodded her head. "I'm sorry, Bryan. I know this is awkward for you. You shouldn't have to be here with me." She knew that apart from her and Alaric, only Bryan was aware of the broken relationship.
Bryan smiled gently. "It's my pleasure to escort you, Mrs. Pritzker. Please, let me help you inside."
Evelyn nodded, feeling grateful for Bryan's kindness. She knew that Alaric hated her but all she expected was Alaric to let her know that he wouldn't be accompanying her. At least, she wouldn't have any silly hopes.
"What do you mean?" Evelyn questioned.Kevin began to explain, "Jeremy, Dianna's older brother, was Alaric's bodyguard. When Alaric was around eleven years old, he was almost killed by enemies of the Pritzker family. Jeremy took a bullet for him and died to save his life. Jeremy's last request was for Alaric to take care of his only family, his baby sister, Dianna. Since then, Alaric has carried immense guilt for Jeremy's death and has treated Jeremy's family as his own. Alaric started spending more time with Dianna to ease her grief and ensure she didn't feel her brother's absence, he also sponsored everything for her. Dianna, too, supported Alaric tremendously, and on her eighteenth birthday, she proposed to him. Out of care for her, Alaric ended up promising to marry her and care for her for the rest of her life, not truly understanding the meaning of love. However, Alaric's parents didn't approve of Dianna as their daughter-in-law due to their status."Evelyn offered a sad smile a
"You're pregnant?" Kevin questionedEvelyn, unable to hold back her emotions any longer, remained silent as tears began streaming down her cheeks. She nodded slowly, confirming Kevin's suspicion.Knowing Alaric well, Kevin understood that he would never want a child at this point in his life. He cleared his throat, trying to find the right words, before finally asking, "Does Alaric know about this?"Evelyn wiped away her tears with a trembling hand and shook her head, imploring Kevin, "Please don't tell him. I beg you, he will want to get rid of the child."Sighing deeply, Kevin knew he had to do something. He reached into his pocket, grabbing his phone, and dialed a number. With a concerned tone, he spoke into the receiver, "Hey buddy, I'm sorry but there's an emergency I need to deal with. I'll catch up with you later."After hanging up, Kevin turned his attention back to Evelyn, his face filled with an unknown emotion. "Let's have a talk," he suggested.Evelyn looked at him in conf
Exiting the doctor's chamber, Evelyn's mind was in turmoil. She wondered how she would tell Alaric about her pregnancy. Deep down, she knew Alaric would not want to have a child with her, given their crumbling relationship.Lost in her thoughts, Evelyn's steps paused, and she found herself clutching the report tightly with one hand while protecting her belly with the other. She muttered to herself, "What if he asks me to abort this child?"The mere thought of abortion made Evelyn's heart ache and bleed.___________Amidst the chaotic, honking cars on the road, Evelyn's mind was in disarray. Unbeknownst to her, tears streamed down her cheeks. Wiping them away, she looked at the report once more, contemplating her next move. Just then, a voice called out from behind, causing her to freeze in fear."Evelyn?"Evelyn turned around, horrified to see Kevin, Alaric's best friend, standing there.Kevin's voice was laced with suspicion as he questioned her, "What are you doing in front of a hos
At noon, Evelyn rushed to the bathroom sink and began to vomit again. She gagged as she threw up everything she had for breakfast, feeling utterly uneasy. After washing her face, she stumbled back to her bedroom. As she sat down on the edge of her bed, she took out her phone and opened the calendar. Her eyes widened with concern as she muttered to herself, "My period is late." She quickly stood up, panicked, and hurriedly opened her drawer to check for her intact packet of birth control pills. Upon realizing that she hadn't been taking them regularly, she mumbled, "Oh shit, this can't be happening."Evelyn frantically grabbed her purse and rushed out of her house. Outside, she flagged down a taxi and hopped inside, gasping, "Please drive me to the nearest hospital."As the taxi sped towards the hospital, Evelyn was still in a state of shock. She spoke to herself in a low voice, "How could I be so careless?"______________________________________________________________Two hours lat
The morning sun slowly filtered in through the window, casting a warm glow on the living room floor where Evelyn laid sound asleep. She was jolted awake by a gentle shake and the sound of her butler, Kenny's soft voice. Blinking her eyes and wincing because of the severe headache, she struggled to sit up."Madam, please wake up. Are you okay?" Kenny asked, his voice laced with concern as he knelt down by her side.Evelyn blinked her eyes several times to clear her head before looking around, trying to piece together what happened last night. As her gaze fell on the now-clean floor, she felt a pang of guilt for making Kenny clean up the mess."I'm sorry for making you clean up the mess," she said softly.Kenny shook his head gently, his eyes still filled with worry, "No, madam, please don't apologize. I wanted to place you somewhere more comfortable, but I was forbidden to touch you. I didn't want to anger Sir."Evelyn let out a sad smile in understanding and nodded. "Where is he?" she
"So, you've finally decided to come home?" Alaric was angry, but Evelyn did not seem to understand why her so-called husband was waiting for her.Evelyn, clearly drained, simply replied, "I'm too tired for your taunts."Attempting to leave, Evelyn was halted by Alaric, who grabbed her hand and pulled her closer.A demanding tone filled Alaric's voice as he asked, "It's 1 am. Where have you been since morning?"An irritated expression on her face, Evelyn replied, "I said I'm tired."Alaric felt his anger building up, but his gaze shifted to the dried bloodstain on Evelyn's forehead. Curiosity took over, and he gently inquired, "How did you get this injury?"Alaric reached out to touch the wound, but Evelyn slapped Alaric's hand away, defiance in her eyes. "It's none of your business," she retorted.Alaric furrowed his brow and released his grip on her. Calming himself, he repeated his question, this time with a mix of fury and concern."Where have you been, Evelyn?" He asked.Respondi
